Low cost work horse? 21 May 2006 (Forum)
We run a Mini and an MX-5 which cover almost all of our motoring needs. Occasionally though it would be useful to have a 3rd car to use for taking garden waste to the tip, bringing home the occasional Ikea flat pack and taking bikes out occasionally. -
406 slight vibration 4 Sep 2005 (Forum)
On my recent auction purchased 406,I have just done 1500 miles on a round trip into France, and unfortunately, the rear horizontal link bars had to be replaced while I was there,as the old ones had expired. The idea was to get back to Britain and have the bars replaced here.Anyhow..... The car still has a slight vibration to it,insofar as it lasts about 3 seconds, and repeats every,say,5 seconds at speed in excess of 60mph. Before I went, the tyres were replaced, and the wheels balanced,so I think that's covered, and I do have another theory, but I want to throw it open to you guys for input. -

Rotten egg smell 16 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Basically the cause of this was the Alternator overcharging the battery, which started to dry it up and emit this smell. I got the alternator changed, and replaced the battery with one from another working car. The smell dissappered immediately. 2 weeks on, I popped open the bonnet and noticed that the tray holding up the battery, and the rod holding in place the battery, seems to be covered in what looks like dried up battery fluid (white, greyish in colour and flaky) Any ideas of what the cause of this could be, it's baffled me. -
Peugeot 406 Hdi 110 12 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I have previously done both jobs on a 405 non turbo, not difficult just time consuming. Has anyone any experience please? The car and owner have been put out to grass so just local journeys now! -
Tailgate mirror for MPV 17 Sep 2003 (Forum)
We have occasionally seen apparently good quality mirrors attached to the rear roof and even one extending from the factory rails to cover the back of the car. The dealers and accessory shops around here claim no knowledge of such things. Does anyone know where we can get a decent tailgate mirror for a MPV? Do they interfere much with the tailgate lifting up? -
Breakdown Direct - for small vehicles on 15 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Just visited http://www.breakdowndirect.co.uk/ as I was wondering how they manage to give such good value. Ploughing through the terms and conditions it appears that the maximum vehicle height covered is 1.5m. This must rule out a lot of cars. As well as most mpvs ( including Berlingo and Kangoo ) even the humble Astra comes in at 1.510m. Gross vehicle weight is 3.5 tonne though. Do you think every mechanic is issued with a tape measure ? -
BMW V8 Cuts Out 1 Aug 2003 (Forum)
When the fault occurs, holding the throttle when starting will keep the engine running, but it dies as soon as the throttle is released. Anybody got any ideas? (We have owned the car from new, it's covered 30,000 miles and never had any previous faults or repairs) -
mondeo live with the leak? 20 May 2003 (Forum)
The car is due an mot soon so i am reluctant to undertake expesive work that is elective in case more is needed for more work to get it through its mot. I am considering it may be time to cut my losses should it pass as things could start getting expensive soon. -
Warranty or a holiday? 3 Dec 2002 (Forum)
My Passat TDi exits VW's warranty in February 2003 so I'm wondering if I should shell out for another 2 or 3 years for an independent warranty. 3 years is £700 which goes a long way towards a holiday or covers quite a few repairs. The car's done 53K and runs like a dream (albeit a slightly PD noisy one!). I've had the oil changed every 5K. Am I likely to get some heavy-ish bills in the next 50K and if so can anyone recommend a decent warranty firm? -
2.5 V6 Omega Pathitic Performance 9 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Anyone any ideas, I was thinking as the engine is covered in oil crankshaft position sensor or the like is may be playing up. -
Brake dust 15 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Any thoughts on excessive production of this on a Ford Lynx (Mondeo). Car has less than 2000 miles on the clock and within a few miles of washing, front trims are covered in brake dust. Thought at first this was simply due to newness and might go away but appears to me very abnormal and beyond the usual deposits one experiences. -
Catseyes 29 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Is this a policy decision, not to replace them when they wear out? Gave me a nasty moment, when the catseyes suddenly disappeared mid-bend just as there was a car coming the other way with badly adjusted headlights dazzling me. For a short time, I completely lost track of my position on the road (with the reflective white markings being badly worn, covered in salt and mud, and reflecting about as well as a carpet). -
GEARBOX THRASH ON FIESTA 8 Oct 2001 (Forum)
On collecting the car I was told that there was no fault, and that the noise was "gearbox thrash". The garage said that there was no fix for this condition, and as it isn't a fault Ford will not rectify under warranty. -
Mazda - Mazda used approved warranty claim advice, please 13 Jun 2009 (Forum)
In January this year I bought an approved used Mazda MPV 2.0TD through a Mazda dealer for £5000 which came with a years Mazda Zoom Zoom Plus (ZZ+) warranty. When I bought the car she had covered just over 52000 miles. In order to qualify as a used approved Mazda it had to have Full Service History and pass a rigorous inspection. This was a blue chip car. I soon noticed that it was using a little oil necessitating topping up weekly and this has steadily got worse to the point that having covered just over 5000 miles (bringing the total mileage to just over 57000) it has consumed just under 7 litres of oil, or to put it another way about 1 litre every 750 miles. -
2013 XC70 P3 - Volvo xc70 2013 - replacement gearbox, knocking 25 Jan 2023 (Forum)
Owner is paid, mechanic is paid, I'll be the one losing out. 3 mo the warranty on gearbox, but no idea what that covers, I'm sure their ass is covered . Bought the car, 2 days of owning it, the saga continues. Any advice or ideas greatly appreciated Thanks -
Limits of Warranty? 5 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Well, they found the problem - it's apparently a software upgrade or re-flash that's required, so no actual 'mechanical' part was broken. I checked with the Mercedes Warranty adminstration & was informed the cost would not be covered - as it's deemed an 'adjustment' or upgrade & not a mechanical failure. Of course, I suggested that the car works as a whole & whether the problem is software or hardware related, it manifests itself as a fault - so should be covered (in spirit!) -
Ford Mondeo - Unleaded - Smell of fumes/exhaust inside the car 3 Nov 2014 (Forum)
But when I told the Ford garage about this, they said that fumes cannot get into the car as the under carraige of the car is covered so as to not allow fumes to get into the car. I am really confused as to what may be causing this, as it is giving me a slight headache and I have to open both front windows even when its raining. -
from one extreme to the other 5 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Ah sod the bangernomics. You only live once, unless you believe in the eternal soul. I've always driven big, solid cars, and last year my car hit a tree and the paramedics reckoned the size of the car was a major factor in me walking away without even a scratch. The car didn't even have airbags! I have a budget of 8k. -
Vauxhall Zafira - Warranty 15 Aug 2012 (Forum)
My Zafira (DY 10 PLATE full service history) temprature warning light came on when I was driving on the motorway and when I found a safe place to pull over close to an exit (had 4 kids in the car) I stopped the car. The car would not start and so I contacted my vehicle recovery supplier who came and towed me to safety. Upon inspection they advised that my car needed to go to a garage. The garage then took a week to identify the problem and quoted information stored on a black box being provided to Vauxhall.
