  • Dilema of options for buying a new/newish car 17 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Hoping for some advice for a situation I have never been in before. Background: My self employed wife is looking to get a new or newish car to replace her current car. We had a look around a few likely contenders and she is very keen on the BMW 1 series. She does about 8,000 business miles and 4,000 private miles a year. At the moment she claims 40p per mile back from her own business for this.
  • FIAT Punto (1994 - 1999) - 1998 - battery boost - help needed 17 Dec 2007 (Forum)
On re-installing the battery to the car the engine cranked over nicely but absolutly nothing from the engine-not even a try to fire up. I've got a sinking feeling here that the ECU has lost everything, ive heard of this battery thing that fits into the cig lighter, but thought a 10 year old car would be tolerant of a battery disconection-my 11 year old Hyundai Sonata gave no problems at all when i fitted a new battery last year.
  • Legroom Required - Apply Within 12 Jun 2007 (Forum)
The time is approaching for a replacement for my Vectra B to be found. All things being equal, a 2 year old/60,000 mile Vectra C would be sought from auction. However, whilst I'm 6'2" and find the Vectra comfortable in the front, my 13 year old son is starting to complain about the lack of legroom in the back (and a load of other things as well being a teenager!).
  • spacesaver tyres & old backroom polls 13 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Stimulated by the recent thread on spacesaver spares, I've been thinking. When we had a poll on spare tyre options, 85% or so of respondants expressed...
  • VW T Cross - VW 1.0 (95) Tsi engine 'flutter' 12 Jan 2024 (Forum)
As a simple old soul, I reason this fluttering/missing shouldn't be happening at all in  todays engine and none of my previous small engine turbo cars have done this. Before I ask the dealer for a 'from cold' drive and get the no fault found reply, I'd be grateful for any thoughts.
  • Nissan Note 1.4 petrol 2009 - oil change? 9 Oct 2020 (Forum)
Our old but so far trusty Note is due for its MOT and annual service.  It has done 47,240 miles. Due to the current and our previous personal circumstances the car has only covered just over 2,000 miles in the last 2 years.
  • Toyota Yaris - Advice on used Toyota Yaris (old car) 3 Jun 2017 (Forum)
Another question about used Toyotas  - sorry! Out of the blue I've been offered a 2001 Yaris for £600.00 on a private sale. It has about...
  • zafira 1.7dti ecoflex 110ps. - a mysterious noise 1 & 2 2 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Noise seems to come from right front area of car. Today into main dealer as in same rev range now have a 'tinny' sound and engine sounds very harsh when accelerating. First a test drive - oh says mechanic still got that old sound then. Agree new sound there- 1 hour in workshop sorry cant find any reason for it but agree its there as is the old sound.
  • Not on Askmid yet. 31 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Tonight, I thought I'd better check and to my surprise, the 54 plate shows uninsured and the old one shows still valid. I don't need to use the car tomorrow but Erin Dors will need it am Monday. I have no certificate yet. Do I risk an ANPR pull or just carry all the docs appertaining to the transfer and hope for the best ?
  • Path mishap 10 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I think that the writer of the final scene in ?The Italian Job? got his ideas from the seesawing of the car as my neighbour climbed out. I was at work the next day and never did find out how he got the car back on the road.
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace II (2008 - ) - HJ's road test has arrived! 18 Jun 2008 (Forum)
In fact, this event is soooooooo important, that I thought it was worth starting a new thread, rather than posting yet another post on mlj's thread. I was somewhat surprised at the comment "So instead of being quite good for a van, it actually is car-like to drive with a fine blend of ride and handling that belie its utilitarian looks." Personally, I thought that the old Berlingo was pretty car-like to drive with a fine blend of ride and handling.
  • £8.5k, economical hatch. 29 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Right, baring in mind that th.is will be about six months down the line, I'll be changing my car (6 year old, 1.6 focus) for a new (18 month old) small hatch. I've figured that with £8,500 (I've saved up) I should be able to afford a decent one? Trouble is I'll be wanting a diesel, that will achieve a good mpg and a minimum of 18 months warranty left that wouldn't depreciate too much over the next 2/3 years (perhaps worth £5000 in a couple of years)?
  • Insurance for "chav" mods 19 Apr 2006 (Forum)
A question for all you young lads or for the insurance experts My nearly 19 year old son is changing his car from the ancient VW Golf he had to practise in. He is looking at a 7 or 8 year old VW Polo - likely a 1.4 (please no comments about the car - that's his choice). He is already planning ideas on all the things he wants to do to it.
  • £8k to spend. What to buy? 28 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I lose my company car in February and so will be back in the world of buying my own tax discs, tyres, fuel, etc. My budget is £8k and ideally would like a car 3 years old with less than 40k miles on the clock. I also need a decent amount of space as I need to fit a pram and shopping in as well as accommodate the usual weekend trips to B&Q and Ikea.
  • Good News, Sad News 26 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Good News: Renewed the insurance on the Camaro today. £336.79 same as last year. Not too excessive for a 160mph car. Sad News: Called at the local Sainsbury's to pick up some essentials. Sat in the car waiting for the boss to return with the wine, a lovely old Facel Vega crawled past and parked opposite me. I've seen it around before and it looks like it's just come out of the showroom.

Probably old hat now but: http://jalopnik.com/cars/frankfurt-auto-show/mazda6-images-hit-the-net-ahead-of-frankfurt-unveiling-296946.php Maybe I should have waited ;-) No the Mondeo and therefore Mazda6 too wide.
  • Handprints etched into windscreen 9 Feb 2007 (Forum)
No matter what I clean the inside of my car's windscreen with (including Autoglym Car Glass Polish), by tne time a film has built up you can see the same old handprints and fingerprints every time. It's a replacement screen and I can only assume that the fitter had very corrosive perspiration and that it actually etched its way into the glass!
