  • Follow on to car jacking thread 27 Nov 2001 (Forum)
One woman asked the interviewee, (who I assume to be a Govt spokesman judging by the mealy mouthed nature of his answers) why if the environmental argument was valid for road transport did it not apply to airlines re duty free fuel, and why dual standards were being applied. The answer was that two different situations apply. UK fuel duty is there because its a travel contained within the UK situation, whereas airlines are operating an import/export business and it needs the whole world to agree on duties.
  • Peugeot 306 HDi 2.0 (2000) - 306 HDi...possibly a dumb question 9 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I have a 306 which wouldnt start, I ruled out the LP pump by powering it via a sealey power probe and a spare battery and the car starts and runs fine After looking into common faults with this model and bearing in mind I probably know less about cars than the average 6 year old girl this might be a world class dumb question lol So far I have figured out the following The fuel on is pumped by the LP pump in a circle back to the tank and the HP pump takes only the fuel it needs The LP pump primes for 10 seconds in the pre ignition phase to allow for a car thats run out of fuel but runs constantly once the engine has started So rather than finding the fault thats stopping power from getting to the LP pump which icould be the pump relay, the connector, the wiring itself an ECU output or maybe even the emergency fuel cut off solenoid (its a diesel so not as risky as a petrol model) what, if any are the downsides of just powering this pump from a 15A supply that becomes live with the ignition?
  • Tyres, cheap or expensive? 7 Apr 2018 (Forum)
I have a 2009 Hyundai i30 1.6 diesel. I commute to work and back about 7 miles each way. I have previously always fitted GoodYear Efficient grip tyres as they have a good balance of reasonable cost, fuel efficiency and low noise.
  • Any Focus 2.0 petrol MK 2.5 owners out there? 17 Aug 2015 (Forum)
Fifth gear was also just too low geared for easy motorway cruising. I realise the 2.0 will be even worse on fuel/tax, but I just can't risk the diesel! I wish I could test drive one to see the power difference, but I more than likely have to travel out of Cornwall to find one.
  • VW Golf, Ford Focus, Hyundai i30, Honda Civic - Small family hatchback advice 6 Jun 2014 (Forum)
I'm looking to get a second hand family hatchback with a budget of ~£10,000. I do a lot of motorway miles so need a diesel. I was aiming to get a car with low mileage <20,000 with a good warranty. I'm hoping to keep the car for 5years so looking for reliability and good fuel economy Does anyone have any good recommendations, and any dealers they would advise (I live in the South West)?
  • mazda 3 1.6d - Real life mpg after 6 months 27 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Hi I'm really pleased with my mazda 3 1.6 D I bought new ( pre reg ) 6/12 ago. However , despite a lot of care I seem to be unable to get more than c48 mpg...the fuel monitor seems pretty accurate, and the brim to brim tests give a similar figure. I ran it in as per Honest john advice My old corolla diesel seemed to improve with age economywise, is it worth chatting to mazda or is this real life figure par for the course ?

  • 15K to spend on new or 1 yo 23 Jan 2011 (Forum)

  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - New car - driving tips 9 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Is this due to the characteristics of modern diesel engines? I used to have a 1.9TD Xsara, but that did 45mpg no matter how I drove it.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 1994 1.8 Intermittent starting problem 22 Jul 2008 (Forum)
However, on these occasions it will start immediately if you use jump leads, or bump start it, which seems to rule out fuel supply problems. Anyone any ideas? robertk
  • Efficient petrol engines - suggestions? 1 Jul 2008 (Forum)
With the petrol / diesel price differential getting worse instead of better as it should in the summer months, it might be heloful if between us we could come up with examples of particularly fuel-efficient petrol engines - clearly not the 1.6 Ford Focus as the current thread shows!

  • Astra 2.0 DTi 16v - is it any kop? 8 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I'm thinking about parting with £2.2k for a 130k miler Astra. Model is 2.0 DTi 16v CD and it seems drive ok and engine seems pretty useful for a diesel. No niggles that HJ's guide points out for it and it's got full dealer history, new cambelt, fuel pump replaced not long ago so all in all seems to point to a fairly decent buy - although the interior seems dull, but then it is a vauxhall I guess.

  • Saxo cold start problem 31 May 2004 (Forum)
My wife's Saxo diesel (68,000) has developed a bit of a problem when starting from cold. It blows white smoke from the exhaust and runs rough for about a minute, then settles down and runs perfectly. No problem on warm starts, just first thing in the morning.

  • VAUXHALL SIGNUM 2.0 DIESEL 2004 - SIGNUM ELITE POWER LOSS 4 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Hi everyone. Ever since a cowboy 'mechanic' on a mobile van rescued my SIGNUM DIESEL after a wrong fuel incident, the TURBO has been giving me problems and the car has had considerably less power, and most especially a sudden loss after i rev the engive over 2500 revs at any given gear.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 99 2.0 Worn diesel injectors?? 30 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Took it back to garage as I thought that maybe they had replaced the timing belt wrong. After 3 days and they told me that possibly the diesel injectors were on there way out or the fuel pump. They had attached it to a Peugeot diagnostics kit (borrowed as not a main dealer) and that showed high fluctuations in revs over 2000rpm. To fix would cost the best part of £1000 and wouldn't be worth it, however I don't have any of the other symptoms of diesel injector failure ie black smoke, problems starting.
  • Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 1998 1.5 diesel cam belt change 5 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I am a pretty decent DIY?er and actually work for a major OEM in the UK but have always tended to shy away from the diesel cam belt replacements. Having purchased the car this week and found that its actually a reasonable drive whilst being ultra conservative on the fuel I thought it may actually be a long term investment?
