  • Renault Laguna Auto 4 Jul 2001 (Forum)
I have an "N" reg Laguna Automatic. For a few months I've had a problem with it "holding" low gear when cold, but today it went to "3" on the Motorway and stayed there for 40 miles all the way home. Running it later when cold, it's doing the same thing.
  • New car - making a shortlist 28 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Front seats not the best, but dashboard and i-Drive controller very good.  Automatic is a torque converter - good. Ford C-Max     A surprisingly strong contender, but I want to go back to an automatic and Ford's Powershift gearbox is all too similar to a DSG.
  • Drivethedeal. 29 Nov 2020 (Forum)
Personally I would factor in an extra two years of exetended warranty on the Fabia as I would have a DSG again - not sure if I'd do the same with the Jazz (which also only gets a standard 3 yrs warranty, as opposed to, say, a Toyota, or Hyundai at 5 yrs). And, by way of an alternative, the Fiesta automatic now starts at around £23,000 !! - with around £4,000 knocked off at some brokers.  That sounds a lot for a Fiesta. It's making that Fabia automatic SE hatch look cheap at a discounted price of not much over £13,000.
  • Honda Accord - 2004 Accord v 2008 Mondeo mk 4 24 Jun 2020 (Forum)
I should note that I'm a young driver so the insurance is ~1.5-2x more for the Honda. The 2004 Honda Accord 2.4L i-VTEC Executive is up for £2.7k, automatic, petrol, has had 1 owner, 85k miles and is at a (seemingly) reputable dealer. MOT hisotry is a bit more complicated and has upper susp ball joint wear, front radius arm play in bush. The 2008 Mondeo 2.0 Zetec is up for £2k, manual, petrol, has had 4 owners, 85k miles and is private.
  • Cheap running costs for 10k/year commute 3 Dec 2016 (Forum)
There are a lot of small cars with small petrol engines which show very high MPG numbers, but I'm suspicious of how these actually perform in the real world - especially with an automatic gearbox. We have a 1.2TSI Skoda Roomster manual (not available for commuting purposes!) which drives fine and does 50+ MPG at moderate speeds on the flat but is very thirsty driven over 60mph or over any kinds of gradient and our overall MPG figure is considerably below the ones normally quoted.
  • Cars should be fun 3 Apr 2015 (Forum)
I want to just grab the keys and go for a drive for the sheer pleasure of it.  Automatic.  I know some people will think fun and automatics don't go together but I simply don't want to go back to a manual car.  Its been to long and I still live in the city centre.  Small.

  • Skoda Superb (2008 - ) - DSG not as efficient as was promised? 15 Sep 2008 (Forum)
When DSG gearboxes were first available, they were claimed to be a great advance on old torque-converter automatics. Apart from faster and smoother gearchanges, the elimination of the torque converter was supposed to make them much more efficient, so that there would be no increase in fuel consumption or emissions.
  • Suitable car for tall person with injured knee 7 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I'm seeking a car that is comfortable with excellent front seats and leg room, reliable (I live in a rural area with no sign of a bus service and the two faults that stopped my previous S80 in it's tracks - ETM and ECU - could easily strike again), economical and, with an automatic transmission. Budget? I could stretch to £10K but would prefer to part with about half of that if possible. Apologies for the life story but I thought some background information would explain why I am where I am and why I seek what I seek.
  • Citroen C5 (2001 - 2008) - '01 HDi - Strange 'knocking' through the steering 1 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Hi all, Bought a 2001 Citroen C5 recently (the 2.2HDi SX automatic hatchback). Lovely car in all regards apart from a weird sort of "knocking" that's transmitted through the steering column. (Well it looks horrible too of course, but practical family diesel automatics aren't that common, so it wasn't a style-led choice!)
  • Toyota Corolla (1997 to 2002) - 1998 1.3 Programming Key Fob? 23 Dec 2024 (Forum)
Hi Guys, I am reposting this question as I did not get any reply to my question which I posted in Dec 08. I have a Toyota Corolla 1998, S Reg Automatic GS 1.3 bug eye shape UK Model car which I bought 2nd hand for my wife and it came with only one set of keys. I have acquired a new key Fob and would like to program it. Could some one please help me with the instructions.
  • Saab 9000 - Saab 9000-should I buy? 3 Sep 2024 (Forum)
Some seemingly well cared for ones are for sale for decent money. Is there anything to look out for? This car would be for my friend who can only now drive automatics, so how strong is the auto box in these cars generally?   I understand that the 9000 was one of the last 'true' Saabs before the 'cloned Vectra' 9-5.  Does that make the 9000 a better buy over the more modern  9-5?
  • Manual cars worth less than auto secondhand 16 Jun 2024 (Forum)
Interesting read that informs that: "Residual values of used cars with manual transmission are in decline, with some models worth as much as 21% less than their automatic equivalents and fewer manual cars for sale in 2024 than ever before" I suppose it's inevitable as people buy electric as well as ICE cars and hybrids generally being auto. It suits me if I can find a cheaper car in manual form but worrying they will become harder to source.
  • Ford Mondeo 2014 Powershift - Sc*** or Invest 14 Dec 2023 (Forum)
After just investing the best part of 650 to replace timing belt/water pump and oil and filter change, I have just had gearbox failures from the (what I now learn as notorious) Powershift gearbox. The fault code (as read by the AA) was 'Shift Solenoid D stuck'. I called a local automatic gearbox specialist who quoted 2800 as a minimum to rebuild the gearbox - and other damage found could add to that quote. Given the 'webuyanycar' price is less than 3k, anyway, is it best to reluctantly sc*** and move on?
  • Nissan Micra - Which Nissan Micra Models have CVT transmission? 5 Aug 2023 (Forum)
Hi all Been looking at a Little Nissan Micra 58 plate 1.4l Acenta as I'm on a really tight budget and love these cars (owned one previously). It's an auto though which tbh I don't mind, but are these CVT transmission or just automatic transmission?  Heard a few bad points about CVT Tried to find out but to no avail. I know they did change them at some point but can't seem to find out when.  Any help and advice much appreciated, TIA

  • Ford Fiesta ST - Battery charging 6 Feb 2021 (Forum)
Hi, I've just started charging my car battery and looking for some advice. The car is a 2014 Fiesta ST and the charger I'm using us a CTEK MXS 5.0 Fully Automatic Charger. The charger has a reconditioning mode which uses a higher voltage of up to 15.8V, and I'm wondering if this is safe because I haven't disconnected the battery from the car - the instructions for the charger didn't mention that.
  • Vauxhall Corsa - Engine needs gas to start 16 Dec 2019 (Forum)
Evening all, Sorry if this question has been posted before - this is my first time posting here. I bought my first car last week, a 2006 Vauxhall Corsa Active Automatic 1.4L. When I turn the key in the ignition I need to give the car some gas in order for it to start. This seems to happen every time I start the car. Other than that the car seems to be running well but I must be honest, I am clueless when it comes to cars!
