  • unknown - Advice for a smallholder 13 Mar 2015 (Forum)
., My wife does 1 day a week commute of 60miles, i need something good in snow and mud, reliable, can tow a trailer with a couple of sheep in. and have about £3000 to spend any ideas everyone? I'm no mechanic for sure, afraid private buyers are chucking their cars in cos they're about to go wrong, and didn't have a good experience with a garage...bit stuck really... any advice would be great,,I live in the sticks so not much about locally..
  • Dodge Nitro - starter spinning but engine is not turning over 1 Aug 2014 (Forum)
We hooked the jump pack on and it seems that the starter is spinning but not cranking the engine, I then thought the starter was shot. However, we towed the vehicle and was difficult to get into gear but once in gear there was no joy engine was still not spinning over. I don't want to fork out for a new motor if it could possibly be something else?
  • VW Golf GTi 16v mk2 - Engine oil leak X 2 17 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Hi, i had to get towed back the other night by the AA when my golf chose to spit its engine oil out every where. Got it home and found an oil switch on the oil filter housing was pumping out oil at a fair rate, changed the switch but have noticed i've also got a much slower but continuous (leaks when engine off)  leak at the back of the engine (haven't located source yet).
  • Honda CR-V II - Which fuse for Rear Parking Sensors 8 Apr 2014 (Forum)
His response was that as they were 'after market fitted' there was no interaction. On this basis, I would like to know which fuse I'll need to remove when I tow, so that the sensors don't distract me by complaining about the proximity of the trailer!  The owners manual doesn't mention parking sensors at all. Regards
  • 4X4's - Used 4X4's a little advice please... 5 Jun 2013 (Forum)
Now that my daughter has bought a horse, she is considering buying a 4X4, she is selling her audi a3 and hopes to find something that won't cost a fortune to run as she will have to use it for work also. We have been looking at Mitsubishi Pajero's 2.5, 3 door. She needs something that will be able to tow a trailer. The Shoguns seems to be way too big. It appears that some Landrovers don't have the pulling power. I'd be grateful for some ideas on 4X4's i.e. not too heavy on the diesel, mileage, maintenance.

  • Audi Q5 - Towbar electrics 28 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I am about to take delivery of a new Q5 and require towing facility for my caravan. Audi are quoting £1800 for thier kit as apposed to a Whitter bar with dedicated electrics      ( not by pass) which costs £650. My dilemma :-  Having spoken to the Audi technical people they tell me that when the new wiring kit is installed a diagnostic programme has to be completed at a cost of £138.
  • Ford Fiesta - 60 plate Fiesta - warranty problem 30 Jan 2013 (Forum)
While at the end of a 120 mile journey last week it developed a strange rattling sound. I pulled into a car park and called breakdown service and was towed home. The car has been diagnosed by Ford as needing a new short motor which will cost £3750 and they are claiming the fault has originated in a spark plug and ruined the engine from there. As such they are refusing my claim on the warranty.
  • Polo Variant 1999 - Car will not start 28 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Two weeks ago we had the clutch changed and note that we cant move into fifth gear - could this be a cause of the following problem: Three days ago while driving the accelerator gauge went to zero and the car just stopped. Tried repeatedly to start - it turns over but will not crank.  Had it towed and diagnostic done came up with a load of fault codes but the mechanics cant work out what is wrong?  Can anyone help. We have made all the regualr cheques, fuel, batter, plugs etc etc.  Any ideas we are in Ethiopia and need this car to work!

I noticed that when it cuts out al the dash warning lights come on, the speedo goes to 0 MPH and the rev counter goes to 2500 RPM. Although I tow a small caravan and this problem occurred twice within 10 minutes, the car has also cut out when being driven solo. HELP! Thanks, Roger

  • Ford Mondeo Ghia x 2.0L petrol - Clutch conversion (DMF to Solid) 28 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Hi to All, has anyone changed their clutch and used a solid flywheel instead of a DMF. If so does it make a lot of difference. Iam a very gentle driver and wont be towing anything. Gentle meaning no fast pull aways or racing. Will probably only be doing a maximum of about 10 000 miles a year. Have had a quote of £620.00 for complete change using DMF which I thought was very good after pricing up all the parts seperately.
  • 406 hdi 2003 - pug406 8 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Can anyone help>> had a new rad fitted 5 weeks ago due to other failing, since then the car has ran fine, until i tow the caravan??? the car then starts to overheat on any climbs jumping up to around 80 deg, we then turn the heater on and temp starts to drop. The vehicle is fine running around town and in standing traffic with the van on the back or not. its not losing any coolent and i've had it on tick over on the drive and have witnessed the fan dropping in and and out.. but i understand they have a 2 speed fan , is there anyway of checking that the speed 2 is working correctly??
  • what 4x4? and pinin advice 28 Aug 2011 (Forum)
I basically want a cheap 4x4 by the winter months for the bad weather and to go to the stables in my nicer, newer car is getting trashed going to the stables everyday. I do not intend to tow with it, I dont really want to spend more than £1k as it really will be a 2nd car. I have also looked at a mid 1990's disco but worried about costs on them
  • vw sharan 2001 tdi - non working fog and reversing lights 7 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Hi the fog and reversing lights stopped working, i have checked every fuse in the holder and they are ok. the bulbs, the loom on the rear door, (i have a reversing beacon that is wired in by the rear cluster and thats not working too). I'm now thinking it could be the reverse cut out switch for the fog lights? There is a tow bar fitted. the wierd thing is after checking things on a friday evening when nothing worked i tried saturday morning and the reverse lights came on for about a min while i checked it all worked properly, then stopped again.
  • VW POLO 1.4 - action when EMS warning light displays 1 Jun 2011 (Forum)
If it is caused by a faulty part, why has it failed? What 's the next step? Can the car be driven to a garage or should it be towed in? Please advise.
  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class W203 - Steering Lock gone and Turn Indicators/Alarm 8 Jan 2011 (Forum)
However the alarm IS on, though the light in the button does not flash after 30 seconds of being locked (but anti-tow alarm light/button does immediately on locking, as usual). What could this be due to? I've followed the manual to disable and re-enable both alarms. Seperately, a week or two ago, the rear screen demister elements stopped working - not sure if this is related.
