  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1999 1.8 - Fuel leak & more 13 May 2008 (Forum)
I have a fuel leak coming from under the filler pipe leading to the fuel tank. Hard to see exactly where from but it looks like it's coming from some way up the pipe leading to the filler cap. It's not gushing (yet!) just a constant drip. It leaks when I fuel it and when driving but stops when i park up.
  • 1987 Renault 5 ... cutting-out 17 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I don't mind paying to get something fixed, I'm just worried about spending a lot of money on diagnosis that leads to mounting expenses when the car is worth so little (it has 70,000 on the clock). So if anyone out there can offer their ideas it would really help. Thank you JJJ
  • 306 XSi Engine behaving oddly... 11 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Over the next few weeks the problem started happening more frequently. Pug dealer said it needed new plugs, HT leads and coil pack. I changed all of these (except no HT leads, the coil pack sits on the plugs directly) but the problem persisted and it's happening more often. A reliable way to bring the problem about is to hoof it over 5000 rpm for a sprint.
  • Mazda MX-5 - Deeply Flattened Car Battery, Revival Techniques ? 7 May 2014 (Forum)
The 'settled open circuit voltage' is always a healthy 12.6 to 12.8 volts but as soon as you apply a load to it, even just sidelights, the voltage falls to below 12 volts and attempting to engage the starter motor/solenoid just results in a rapid clicking noise, at the best, and battery volts falling to below 8 volts, even just on full beam headlamps with the engine not running. Everything else electrics wise seems to be ok and once 'started on the jump leads' the engine ran smoothly and battery volts stabilised at around 14.8 volts with the alternator keeping things all hunky dory! Does anyone know how to 'disolve or disperse' the heavy sulphation in the honeycomb lead matrix inside this relatively young battery (Owners say that used daily, these batteries can last for over 15 years) to release the full surface area and the associated 200 amps or so necessary to turn the starter motor over?
  • Civic diesel MK8. - New battery and voltage 7 Aug 2025 (Forum)
Old battery had died,11.6 V and unable to charge ( 5 years plus old). New battery installed.  At terminals out of the box it read 12.9V and in car with leads attached ( but not switched on ) 12.85V.  Should I be doing a parasitic drain check ? I omitted to check terminal volts with the engine running, but alternator light went out as usual.  Battery is correct 74AH 680AMP.
  • Peugeot 308 SW - Axle Rust 3 Oct 2024 (Forum)
It drives really well but I don't know how much axle rust is ok and how much should be expected of a 2016 car. It looks like it's flaking but I'm unsure whether that could lead to failure. I've linked to an image here as I couldn't see a way to post an image. Can remove link if that's no allowed on the forum. https://ibb.co/kx6gdBv Thanks
  • Toyota Rav 4 2003 - Heated rear window not working 28 Dec 2023 (Forum)
First time I’ve had to use the HRW to find it doesn’t work. Checked the fuse which is ok but there is a relay in the system and a cable leading from the main body to the rear door which gets a lot of pulling. The cable is contained within a rubber tube. Is there any common design faults on this car which may help me to isolate the fault please ?
  • Any - the ugly stick 9 Dec 2023 (Forum)
Noticed how well received the latest Suzuki Swift has been among a few of us here, not exactly enthralled by its looks, someone mentioned the Renault Laguna and how facelifts can sometimes be to a model's detriment. Taken to extremes these facelifts can lead to the ending of what where up to then well loved long lived cars, the one that springs immediately to mind is Granada morphing into Scorpio, looks only a mother could love. Any others where the facelift did the model no favours?
  • Ford Fiesta 2014 1.2 Petrol - P0303 Code 19 Jun 2020 (Forum)
Hi,  Had a mis-fire on cylinder 3 a while ago, changed the spark plugs and HT leads, went for a while then EML came on. Fault Code above same fault. I have ordered a new ignition coil pack as next cheapest solution. If this doesn't work, is there anything else I can try before I take it further with a garage?

  • Any - Wife pillars and blind spots 6 Mar 2018 (Forum)
I realise it is an individual judgement however I am interested in collective wisdom.  I have read in too many car reviews that wide pillars lead to worrying blindspots. Is there any data on collisions caused by blind spots ? I am also interested in hearing of any anecdotal evidence on blind spots. Are any manufacturers /models which are particularly bad ?
  • Willys Jeep MB 1943 - Optimum fuel for 1943 Willys Jeep 18 May 2016 (Forum)
Last October the engine was re-built and fitted with new pistons, new valve seats, and new valve guides. Is it better to use normal unleaded with Lucas lead replacement additive, super unleaded with the additive, super unleaded by itself, or what? I seem to be getting a lot of contradictory advice from friends!

  • Mercedes C 200 Classic (w202) V registration - Battery 19 May 2015 (Forum)
Car would not start earlier , plenty of warning lights on the dash and i could hear the battery in the rear boot making some drained noises. I can see the usual leads plus 2 smaller connections so i am hesitant to remove it for recharging or replacing . until i understand the implications . Anyone got any suggestions as it cant move in its present state , Many thanks , Brian.
  • Ford Mondeo MK2 - Hot Starting Problem 15 Oct 2014 (Forum)
The vehicle has an intermittent hot start problem and when it occurs it will not start until the car has cooled down for approx 30 mins. Spark plugs are Ford OEM and been changed recently, HT leads are in good condition and battery tests show it fine and healthy. Engine is the 1.8 Petrol Zetec-e    Not sure what to look for next?
  • Any - Red diesel usage - who monitors it? 11 Jun 2013 (Forum)
Even if it is the police's job to do this, is it actually worth their while to do it, given that it would probably lead to a lengthy investigation?
  • price of scrap 30 May 2013 (Forum)
As the title says, Ive just had a very nice itinerant person in and he offered me £2 for every scrap battery i had,i told him i would settle for a plate or a balloon only, but what a sign of the times being offered money for them,it looks like as everyone now knows the true value of old cataclysmic converters the new word is lead £200 a tonne now scrap batteries but how many batteries would make that tonne? anyone.
  • MINI Convertible 2010 - clutch/flywheel 4 Apr 2013 (Forum)
I contacted you before but failed to make clear that the car is less than 3 years old and owned from new. I would be grateful to know what sort of driving style could lead to catastriphic clutch failure after only 11300 miles. The pattern of driving is no different from previous cars with similar annual low mileage. I always thought that low mileage was a selling point for used cars Minimugged
  • 1998 2.0 petrol Rav 4 - Rough running 15 Nov 2012 (Forum)
It's fine when accelerating - no lack of power and ticks over very steady too. I've changed the coil packs and leads and plugs, as well as the fuel filter but with no difference. Toyota main dealer couldn't find anything on the diagnostic check - any ideas? Could it be the injectors? It's only done 94k miles. Thanks.
  • Vauxhall Astra H Estate 53 Plate - Steel Wheel Flaw 12 Jun 2012 (Forum)
Anybody had a problem with small flaw in the body of a steel wheel leading to deflation. I have had 2 in a year. Original GM wheels with a Dunlop stamp in the rim. Both occured after a tyre change. An existing manufacturer defect triggered by the tyre change process was the diagnosis.
