  • Benefits of Optimax... 28 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Am I being conned into thinking that this Optimax will give me better economy or do they actually mean that performance will just be better acceleration etc - which for a motorway journey isn't really that important!
  • Speeding (mostly excl cameras) VIII 15 Aug 2003 (Forum)
As there was no signature on the form and no other evidence available to the prosecution upon which to prove the identity of the driver the conviction must be set aside, said the judge. The case is regarded of great importance because of the rapid increase in police speed cameras. The judge was told similar cases were spreading "like a virus" to magistrates courts up and down the country. The case arose after ex-Manchester United player Yorke was fined £350 and ordered to pay £1,000 court costs by Manchester city magistrates after the 31-year-old's Porsche 911 turbo was clocked doing 61mph in Princess Road, Withington, where there was a 40 mph limit, in May 2001.
  • New Car Discounts from the AA 23 May 2003 (Forum)
The AA says, "All new cars are supplied from within the UK, to UK market specifications". I suppose this implies they are not imports, but the wording is just vague enough to allow them to source their cars from non-main dealers, if they chose. Ian
  • When is a New car not a New car? 18 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I was a little bemused by the system they run and the fact that you sign documents before even seeing the vehicle. when you do see the vehicle you are pretty much rushed off the premises as there are so many other cars coming and going. I accepted that my car was an import, but that was reflected in the price. What i couldnt accept was that the car was clearly not new. It had a number of blemishes and had obviously been cleaned up,but it smelt like it had been sitting around for months and did not have the new car smell or feel i was expecting.
  • Alloy Rims And Tyre Repair/Replacement 24 Jan 2002 (Forum)
What is difficult is guaranteeing that the garages standard coincides with your own. The problem of Quality Assurance (QA) in the garage industry in general is an important one. It will not go away. I am sure that those of you who run vehicle maintenance businesses, will have a particular view on this. Irrespective the issue of garage QA is pertinent to us all. Any ideas how to treat my damaged rim?
  • A real anorak 12 Dec 2001 (Forum)
My wife fell about laughing when she just looked at it,she would have been playing with dolls at this time a much more rewarding and important task. But dosn't it say something of the innocence and difference in life style of today when kids have to have interests found for them. My wife suggests I should take it down to the local Police station in case it could clear up unsolved crime.
  • Dealer discount advice needed 16 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Right chaps - here's the deal. I've decided to get the civic Type R I posted about the other day. Not going to import as there's only about £1200 in it and I can't be bothered. I reckon I can get about £500 of that diifference back through shopping around. I love a haggle and intend to make the dealers beg for mercy to get the best price, but whats the best way?
  • Now an MR-2 11 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Having re-read some magazine tests and HJs car-by-car breakdown I'm getting the feeling the MR-2 might be the better drivers car and I think it looks better and will be a bit more exclusive than an MX-5 Spoke to a Toyota dealer today - has delivery of 2 weeks as a possibility and started to sugest we negotiate on price when I mentioned imports - threw in air con for free as well. Not many used on the market, and they seem to be at very high prices, but the way he crumbled worried me a bit. What are the disadvantages from buying from Tradesales?
  • Bad day at the Office.... 6 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Came to change his motor, no prob, gave him a good price for his and chipped a few quid off the new one. He'd decided to swap his wife's grey import for a new supermini. Now this was a dilema. I had no proper base for assesing its value and then would have to move it on, in the trade so to speak. Anyway a few calls later we agreed a price and I got two sales out of it.
  • Mike Rutherfords Champions 7 Feb 2007 (Forum)
And unless a cash-rich buyer can be found for Aston Martin (yet another member of the troubled Ford stable) the future for this tiny but legendary and important British company looks worryingly uncertain. Especially if such a buyer isn't found and Ford is forced to concede, with some justification, that it just can't afford to keep Aston going any longer.
  • EV battery manufacturing. 13 Aug 2023 (Forum)
Australian National Review - You Dig Up 500,000 Pounds of the Earth’s Crust for One EV Auto Battery!  AS regards the UK plants we are going to have to import most of the raw materials to make these batteries from places as far afield as Australia and South America presumably by ship and road or rail to the plant.  The article pictures the scale of the mining and the carbon intensity of doing so.
  • BF selling car on behalf of GF who is abroad 1 Jul 2022 (Forum)
I've found an article on Autoexpress (published in April 2022) that says the V5 is the most important document "which will prove that you are the registered keeper and the car is yours to sell " Yet he is not the registered keeper and so the car, technically speaking, isn't his to sell.
  • Any - Brother and law retirement car 25 Jun 2021 (Forum)
Now that he is retiring, he is thinking of replacing the A4 with a smaller new car that will last him over 15 years or until he or the car will push daisies., this is his most important criteria. The budget is up to 20k plus a bit for the right vehicle. He is not a car person. He needs wheels for A to B with no drama and fewer gadgets as possible. I asked how many miles/year and what pattern of driving he predict?

Two door Orion, Ford or VW badge and often with a detuned VW 1800 GTi motor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Verona I think Honda miss a trick by not importing this wee belter. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_S660 A tough but cheap go anywhere off-reader for less than most city cars. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lada_Niva The car to survive the apocalypse. https://www.toyota.com.au/landcruiser-70 This would do wonders for VW’s rather staid image in the UK. https://drivetribe.com/p/vw-saveiro-2020-its-a-little-pickup-PRVoQlOlT_WESBmEGGNVcA Affordable fun for young drivers.
  • "Dacia" Duster double cab pickup? 2 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Plus, some of the few which crop up for sale are inevitably going to be 1.3 turbo diesel versions). I did wonder about the possibility of importing an NP200. Routine servicing should pose no problems, but not sure how much hassle would be involved in doing so. https://pictures.topspeed.com/IMG/jpg/201206/2010-nissan-np200-3.jpg https://www.nissanec.co.za/wp-content/uploads/landing_page/2015/10/09/NP200.jpg
  • Average miles per annum car - Why so much attention paid to fuel consumption? 7 Oct 2018 (Forum)
.,  depreciation is still 12.5p per mile  - twice that for 4000m p.a. drivers.  So clearly, for most people the rate of depreciation per annum is far more important than studiously comparing fuel economy figures to the nearest decimal point.   As for EVs with 'free' energy,  there are a couple of two year old Tesla S cars (much the same size as a Ford Mondeo) for sale at around £47,000 having done (slightly above average) 20,000 miles.
  • Recommendations - used mini MPV, wheelchair etc. 14 Mar 2018 (Forum)
Some storage, whether under the boot floor or otherwise would be good I also really want a heated front windscreen in this next car, as I'm fed up of waiting 5-10 minutes for the inside to defrost!  Air con would be great, though not as important. Lastly, I'd like something that is reasonably low emission - with the low tax band to match! - and economical to run.  I realise that I've asked a lot, but a car that gets most of them right  would be great.
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee, VW Touareg - another "which car" thread... sorry 1 Mar 2017 (Forum)
hence why i am looking for another suv, something with a bit more luxury, more poke and - very important - more boot space for my fishing gear. so the 2 i have narrowed it down to, within the budget of €10,000 plus my honda, are 2005/6 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD or similar year VW Touareg V6 3.0 tdi, both with under 100k miles (150,000km) one thing that concerns me of sorts, is the reliability. i do not want to buy a money pit because of a badge (had considered and subsiquently ruled out LRD3) i ruled out the VW 2.5 tdi R5 as aside from higher tax, the costs and economy are the same for a weaker engine, same goes for the Jeep's 2.7 CRD. if they are more reliable then obviously they are the smarter choice
  • Cheap running costs for 10k/year commute 3 Dec 2016 (Forum)
Interested in low overall cost of travel more than refinement, size, image of vehicle etc, but want minimal hassle; happy to buy used rather than new, but am too old and too far away from dealerships for the hassle of faults. Don't need aircon.  Acceleration, style/image, size, etc are not important. I don't care if the autobox is unrefined but I care very much if it wastes fuel. Insurance costs are low as I'm ancient and live somewhere quiet; it's all about the depreciation and fuel.
