  • EU Legislation on Petrol and diesel 14 Dec 2001 (Forum)
The removal of sulphur from petrol and diesel will enable new automotive technologies to be optimised further, and will lead to significant reductions in emissions of carbon dioxide
  • Fluctuating Coolant Level 3 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Some help please. My 1990 Citroen BX TGD, ie the 1905cc normally aspirated diesel, recently required the hose leading to the heater matrix replacing as it was leaking coolant through it. The repair has been effected and the coolant level has stabilised for several days and hundreds of miles in the coolant expansion bottle at the recommended level.
  • Polo problems persist 10 Sep 2001 (Forum)
My car has fuel injection so there's not a lot I can do reagrding the choke!! I've done all the obvious things like new HT leads, spark plugs, fuel filter and temperature sensor but the problem persists. It's more noticable on a cold morning as during the summer it's been not too bad most mornings. The car's fine once it's warmed up a little but it's an annoying problem all the same.
  • Underpowered Motas vs Kyoto 15 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Is this the failing of the Company Car Tax mechanism in place now that encourages small engined yet "rep" sized cars to in order to achieve the lowest feasible tax band. IMHO, this will just lead to scores of underpowered but thrashed and therefore, thirsty rep-mobiles - doesn't this go against the principles of the tax - i.e. Kyoto? Any car can be driven steadily and release minimal CO2 etc in line with its engine size but out on the open road it all becomes a joke.
  • MINI Cooper and Cooper S - How safe are our Classic Cars? 11 Dec 2015 (Forum)
So much so that I have begun to collate the physical evidence that points poor management from our British Suppliers that leads them to the mercy of the Far East (China) and the shoddy goods that they are prepared to produce. Indeed, some of my evidence points to 'copy manufacturing' with a scant regard to the original products material specifications and or its intended safety related use.
  • Audi A3 + S3 (2003 - 2008) - A3 3.2 Quattro 11 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Now, heres the thing, I haven;t looked in detail at any Audi, BMW, or Merc before, but the dealer says that these premium German brands are usually badly equipped, however this is not the lead in 1.6 I am looking at, but the flagship 3.2 Quattro. Given the above, I am being "picky", expecting too much? or have I hit on something not commented on much, certainly there's nothing in HJs review of the A3 (2003) which leads the reader to feel the car will short change him of luxuries.
  • A few days in China, cars, pollution, perspective 26 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I found a desire for less pollution amongst my local contacts, but also an amusement that the UK (TB mentioned) had been putting forward as allegedly "Taking the lead" on pollution from cars. So, as we enter the surreal, (Please run the Outer Limits theme tune through your heads) The camera zooms in.. we are a little way back in time.. a certain politician popularly caricatured with big ears and flashing teeth is seemingly grandstanding on the world stage about the UK taking the lead...

  • Peugeot 3008 1.2 - should the low mileage be a worry? 22 Oct 2024 (Forum)
(Obviously there will be a warranty too) I'm just worried that the wow factor with this car (interior and exterior) is leading me into a heart over head scenario! All advice as always gratefully received!
  • Kia Sportage - Halfords Issue 8 Feb 2024 (Forum)
Hi all, Looking for a bit of advise regarding an issue I've had which I have been lead to believe may be a result of Halfords Auto centres mistake. I have diesel car with a mechanical high pressure fuel pump and no on tank pump, which had a fuel filter replacement last year combined with a service at Halfords Auto centre.
  • Hyundai i20 2010 - Noise from top of engine 23 Dec 2023 (Forum)
The mobile mechanic who popped over today said they'd not heard the noise before, but thought it was coming from the spark plug leads and that changing them would probably help/solve issue. They said they thought the car would be fine to drive in the interim as the noise wasn't coming from the engine itself, but I wanted to ask here to see if anyone else has encountered this or could offer any advice, I don't want to risk any further damage as his diagnosis seemed as much guess as anything else.
  • ? Dunno - C-Channel Chassis Frame Design? 31 Dec 2022 (Forum)
People enthusiastically refer to LR "sturdy box-section frames", but I've always considered "box-section" to be big hint of mortality, and a bit of poking around confirms that the frames rot out extensively from the inside. You can buy a new galvanised frame for Series III, but of course it aint cheap. Which leads to the question: What relatively recent non-lorry vehicles, if  any, use the relatively corrosion-proof C-channel frame? only one I can think of would be the BL Sherpa chassis-cabs, as used in the BT workshop trucks, with a demountable back box.
  • Vauxhall astra 1.9 - Astra electric issues 24 Oct 2021 (Forum)
12v is at starter but there is no ignition to activate the starter motor. Where would I find the main earth straps to check they are ok? I connected a lead from engine block to chassis but nothing, I also found wiring a multimeter to chassis and to positive terminal on battery gave 12v should the chassis return 12v?? Earth issue? I've checked all fuses they are ok.
  • BMW 120D XDrive 2013 - Both rear brakes sticking? 5 Oct 2021 (Forum)
I've noticed a few times when setting off that it feels like the hill assist was holding for too long, but I'm starting to question now if this was possibly the brakes sticking.  No harsh braking leading up to them sticking tonight, did notice that it didn't have the same pull as usual, but didn't think too much of it until the juddering started. Not even been under this car yet, so don't have a clue what I'm looking for on this.
  • Ford Transit - Inspection for V778 for old van before scrapping? 2 Sep 2021 (Forum)
    - Given I only want to scrap the van, it seems odd to me that it might need an inspection to check road-worthiness if I intend to scrap the van.  2) Is there a chance that the inspection could lead to a refusal to issue a V778 and thus a refusal to allow me to get ownership of my own property, i.e. the private reg? If so, do they keep my £80 I pay for the V788 too? I'm sorry if my issue is a bit complicated :-s but any advice would be most welcome :-)  Thanks in advice.
  • Toyota Avensis Tourer - Erratic revving 1 May 2021 (Forum)
When warm the car is fine and idle at 1.1k rpm.   SWAMBO is not impressed and saying that over revving can lead to unwanted acceleration which I think is a good point. The car was always serviced by main dealer but the dealer was moved away during lockdown and now is so far I am considering using a local garage, will that be a wise move with such issue as above?
  • Volvo V70 D5 2005/6 - cigarette lighter front and arm rest 23 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I have  a Volvo V70 and for no apparent reason the front and arm rest cigarette lighter sockets have stopped working. There is a Dash Cam plugged in and a spare lead for the sat Nav when required. The Boot one works fine as it is a live feed all the time. This I know because the cool box stays on with the engine off. So far have checked out all the fuses I can find on the car.
  • Audi A3 Sportback - MissFire 27 Aug 2020 (Forum)
I’ve read that this model is Notorious for burning oil but doesn’t have a PCV valve. I have put a new ignition coil in, all new spark plugs and leads, I’ve cleaned out the throttle body. I’ve but a new fuel filter in and when I listen to the injectors at idle they all fire consistently sound good to me. About 6 months ago I had a new gear box and clutch put in.
  • Ford C-MAX - Ford Cmax wobble under acceleration 24 Oct 2019 (Forum)
As you ease off the throttle the wobble goes away and the car will cruise along nicely.  This leads me to think it's something drivetrain related..?   So far we've tried the following through two different garages who have not been able to solve the problem: 4x wheels balanced 4x wheels aligned / tracked 4x new tyres Wheels swapped front to back 2x new driveshafts (offside and nearside both had play in them) and CV joints 2x new front wishbones (rear bushes were failing) 2x new differential bearings (gearbox was removed and checked over and given clean bill of health after new bearings).
  • Ford fiesta - Juddering problem 13 Apr 2018 (Forum)
The car starts fine which it did not with warning light on unless i gave it some gas for about a min else it would cut out. I spent £140 on it so far , and totally lost where to go next. Would new leads and spark plugs help as they not been changed for 3/4 years. car has had new air filter and oil changed in the last 3 months
