  • Skoda Karoq - Possible Purchase 30 Jun 2021 (Forum)
I I don't intend on keeping the car for very long outside it's warranty so might not be much to worry about I was looking at the VW Tiquan, however the Skoda appears to come fully loaded, for a similar price, of a not so fully loaded Tiquan. and they are essentially the same car.
  • Gathering support 16 Apr 2002 (Forum)
"No doubt they will tell us - as they did with the M4 bus lane - that by closing one lane everybody is getting to work more quickly. It is insanity. "They do not want anyone to use cars any more - having driven us all to live in the suburbs they now won't let us drive back in again. "I cannot imagine any other country in the world tolerating such a scheme; only the phlegmatic British motorist, who is apparently content to sit in his car fuming, then go into the office and forget all about it instead of writing to his MP."
  • Mazda CX-30 - Anything better than CX-30 in the same price rang? 29 Jun 2024 (Forum)
Battery keeps dying & car won’t start. Had more breakdown calls than care to remember"  "periodic symptoms, with cruise controller, safety systems, parking sensors, voice control and in dash screen just not working, tailgate lock and motors noisy, rattling interior, loose break caliper ....."
  • VW Polo - Advice Needed For The Best Possible Outcome 6 Apr 2024 (Forum)
I will be meeting with him next week sometime. He hasn't seen the report yet. I do not want the car or anything else to do with him. Certainly do not want him offering to fix anything if he is that type of person. I would not be comfortable letting my teenage son drive a car this man has 'fixed'.

  • Problematic Audi - where do I stand? 29 May 2013 (Ask HJ)

  • Volvo XC60 60 - Engine replacement 6 Oct 2020 (Forum)
I called jack who said get it here and we will take a look. 7 hours later I arrived at the office address ( not the workshop) on the breakdown truck and left the car and keys as directed in one of their spaces. I have not seen the vehicle since, and have been told various different stories as to why it’s not ready yet. I’ve emailed the address advertised, no response, I’ve rung the office number no answer, email address bounces back now.
  • Corsa C (51 Plate) Easytronic - Vauxhall Corsa C Easytronic Losing Power/Gear 26 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Anyway when it originally happened the breakdown guy ended up disconnecting the battery (in an effort to stop the alarm) and the Vauxhall dealership reset the radio code.  A few days ago I had a situation whereby upon moving off from stationary traffic the car just seemed to lose power and just revved when you pressed the accelerator.
  • Hyundai i20 (2009) - A worthwhile deal? 10 Nov 2009 (Forum)
But it is eligible for the scrappage scheme so a thought has occurred to me that "she" could buy a new car, we could sell SWMBO?s 6 year old, 50k Yaris and end up with a new car for the boss, even if it is nominally registered in our daughter?s name. Also, there is a Hyundai dealer just a few miles from where we live (I know there are a few Northampton-ites on this forum, it's the one at Stoney Stratford).

  • Life's a ..... 2 May 2002 (Forum)
Managed to stop under a viaduct. Called the AA, mobile not working properly. Finally established that breakdown vehicle would be sent. Cars and lorries passing at speeds over 70, - terrifying noise, a constant whump, whump, whump as they passed. Remember no hard shoulder. Tried to erect my red triangle warning light.
  • Ford Mondeo - 2001 Mondeo 2.0tddi - various/related problems? 6 Nov 2010 (Forum)
We managed to limp up to the next junction.  To start with the car wouldn't go over 2000rpm, really surging before going into limp mode.  Managed to roll up slip road but as lights were on red then had to wind it forward on starter motor to get off hte road. The car was turning over but not firing, breakdown couldn't get it started so we waited for the recovery vehicle.
  • Personal leasing 2 Dec 2018 (Forum)
In all that time I have not had a single mechanical breakdown and beside annual servicing costs and MOTs, I have only paid out for 3 tyres. My annual mileage has never exceeded 9,000. As to owning the car, if I only keep it for 3 or 4 years, why is ownership so important?

  • Skoda rapid - 2 years / 20k miles in a Rapid (HB) 29 Mar 2016 (Forum)
The central arm rest is also a throw back to cars of yesteryear (and appears to be identical to the one in my old 2002 Octavia Combi 4x4!!).     Overall I found the car to be refreshingly straightforwards.
  • Where can I get a good cheap car? 23 Jun 2012 (Ask HJ)
We need a large estate car - perhaps a Volvo - as we are a family of five with lots of clobber. I don’t mind a car with high mileage, as long as it is...
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 1.8 or 2.0 litre petrol, or 2.0 TDCI? 18 Feb 2009 (Forum)
So the choice between the two come down to a trade-off between reliability and driveability. HJ's car-by-car breakdown at http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=119 lists a long catalogue of problems with the diesel (injectors, DMF, DPF, which may not be all that common but could be expensive disasters if they happened while the car was in use for business.
