• Towing a Horesebox - overweight? 28 May 2008 (Forum)
  Passes an A4 Avant (53 reg 1.9tdi) yesterday towing a two axle horse trailer with a large horse (a lot of the horse showed over the door) inside. Would he be over-weight - it was being driven very gingerly but did have a proper matching number plate on the trailer so I guess he does it regularly.

  Quick question on tow bar electrics and converting between the standards. My car has a 7 pin socket, but I am about to buy a bike rack with 13 pin electrics. Thule sell a 7->13 pin adapter but will I get all of the functions that I expect?

  Full service and repair history. Original clutch, exhaust etc. Friends advise me to fit a towbar to it and use it to get used to towing a caravan in a vehicle I know well. Given the age of the car I was reluctant to put the added strain of towing onto it, but I was going to virtually give it away anyway, so nothing to lose really.

  I am just about to look for a second hand car 3 to 5 years old - probably a Toyota Avensis Estate 2.0D4D diesel.  Would buying a car with a tow bar already fitted be a no-no for people, or just another variable to take into account?  My concern would be that towing does put some extra stress on the engine/clutch and good maintenance and sensible driving are important.

  I purchased the following vehicle from Arnold Clark, Nissan, Perth, Dunkeld Road, Perth, PH1 3XJ When fitting a new tow bar, the engineer at my local garage identified the following :- •              The vehicle had previously been fitted with a tow bar....the tow bar socket was in a plastic bag taped to the underside of the vehicle and the left and right tow bar anchors were still in situ.

  I'm perfectly confident in my abilities to tow but since Im going to be towing a lot of cars about soon I thought it best to brush up on the law as theres a distinct difference between a trailer load of vegetation for the tip and a track car on a trailer on the motorway.

  Hi, Might be a silly question, but was is the advantage of dedicated electrics when fitting a tow bar? Never had them on my mondeo, and the fitting place wants another 150 quid off me to fit them. So I was wondering what they do exactly as ive never had them before. Thanks, Chris

  I have recently noticed a recovery vehicle parking at night with what is obviously a car on its way to the scrap yard on the back. It is the type of truck where the vehicle on tow has its front wheels suspended in a cradle and its rear wheels on the road. I realise that these old cars need to be transported to the scrap yard but is it legal to park them in the street overnight?

    I have searched for an answer but cannot find anything I have a 308 SW which has always had a tow bar fitted, which I've never used.  I'm now thinking it maybe good to use it for a bike rack, however I cannot find an electric harness for it.  Is it possible the car has a tow bar without the option of electrics?

  Hello,    i Recently aquired a 2005 fiat croma which has turned out to be quite a good car after a few niggles at first.    My dad would like to use the car to tow his trailer occassionaly as he does not want to put a tow bar onto his newest car. He has offered to pay for one to be fitted to my car, however i was wondering about the electric system on the car.

  Bat starter all okay cranks over no problem, just seems that a stop is on the pump no white smoke, not fireing at all, jump start does not help, checked all connections and relays okay. Towe van 30 feet and starts, runs fine stop it and have to towe it again, hot or cold, have found a black plastic coil and circut around ign. switch wonder if there is a way to test?  or by pass,?

  I just set my heart in a Mustang convertible with reserves as 435i or 630i perhaps even a Merc. Then i realise this will be the number one car now so i try looking for towbars. Just to tow a small boat.... Oh dear it seems impossible to find a convertible homologated for a towbar. Tried witter so far. Any thoughts?

  My good friend Alan was most grateful to all those who responded on towing weights and the choice of a used vehicle suitable for towing his 1.5 tonne vintage boat. However, he remsins confused and has asked me to post the following in case any more light emerges. Thank you for the information on trailer weights.

  I don't believe the Peugeot was much heavier than the Polo, which itself weighs nearly 1100Kg, but the Polo's engine only develops 70 BHP versus the 90 BHP of the Peugeot.  Apparently a VW Polo won the 'Tow-car of the Year' award for a couple of years running, but I can't find any details of this. More likely the 1.9 Tdi in my opinion . . .  So - my question. Has anybody any experience of using a Polo to tow a caravan please?

  the calculations in towing are diffrent  on  early 2005 to 2006 did they fit the same pd engine in some cars before the change over .
