  • Ford Mondeo - Another thought re small diesels in big cars 19 Feb 2012 (Forum)
So, what do we think to this? I'm looking around at, amongst other things, nearly new Mondeos.  A well known car supermarket has some 61-reg Zetec trim - 2.0 163BHP diesel and 1.6  115 BHP diesel.  And the price?  The same as each other, apart from the £115 v £30 VED. So discuss - how long will the 1.6 be able to cope with such a big car and, assuming you have to work the engine really hard to keep up/going, will the real life economy really be much less than a relaxed 2.0?!
  • 306 Heater Hoses 18 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Does anyone know where I can get hold of cheap non-Peugeot heater hoses to fit my 306 1.9 diesel as I have been quoted £50 + Vat for the ridiculous little things! Also how easy would it be to fit a standard turbo (PSA turbo from a scrapped car) to the engine or would it be better/cheaper to sell and buy a turbo-diesel?
  • Any - Bio-diesel 3 Oct 2010 (Forum)
I recently attended a technical paper on "diesel bugs" as they are commonly known, given by a gentleman from UK who researches such matters. He related an incident that he had recently  with his new diesel vehicle when refuelling at quote a major supermarket netwrok that sells its own brand fuel unquote.
  • Cooking oil the price of. 24 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Is this a coincidence or is the the price of cooking oil being artificially raised too deter  motorists from buying cooking oil at the supermarkets? I used to be able to buy cooking oil at about 30p -40p cheaper than diesel to add but not any longer.

  • Worth buying diesel for long term ownership? 31 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I am looking at a particular car, but most on sale seem to be diesels. I am a low mileage user. Perhaps 6,000miles pre-pandemic. Much less now.  Most of my driving is in town or to the supermarket.  Given the low mileage. I hold on to cars for a long time.
  • Ford Fiesta - 2009 1.6 diesel timing issues 26 Jul 2016 (Forum)
Hi i have just had my timing belt fitted by a mechanic in june 2016 on a diesel 2009 1.6TDCI fiesta. This was done at less than 84,000  Since then the fuel seems to not last as long, although it has been a while since i filled it full to the brim. Due to usage and costs i've been running it on supermarket diesel and generally filling up from empty (fuel light on less than 50 miles) to half a tank.
  • Ford Mondeo - Mondeo/Vectra 2005 - petrol or diesel? 24 Jan 2014 (Forum)
we are usually short runs (10 miles return) with occasional big trips, but like the comfort of  a car Mondeo/Vectra sized - hatchback slightly preferable for the supermarket car park. :-) . Never owned a diesel before because they were always much pricier to buy. BUT.... in the age range we are looking at (about 2005 reg) the diesel cars are the same price or cheaper to buy, which means that with lower fuel consumption a diesel may be a good idea.

  • Petrol prices again! 20 Jun 2005 (Forum)
What's going on. The normally highly competitive supermarkets are jacking up their prices to the extent that they're really no cheaper than anywhere else and more expensive than some. Yesterday Mrs V filled up with Esso @ 81.9p. (diesel 85.9) whilst a couple of miles down the road, the nearest Tesco was charging 86.9p.
  • Vauxhall movano 2.3 - Short journey for diesels DPF etc 16 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Hello, I'm going to be using a 17 plate 2.3 130bhp Vauxhall movano L2h2 3300 as my main vehicle. I'll be doing 4x 90mile motorway journeys per week. If I also use it for trips to the supermarket and driving around town (maybe 2k miles per year) will this cause any diesel/dpf issues over the long term or will the 4x 90mile journeys per week be enough to not make the short journeys have any negative effect?
  • Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - Petrol V Diesel 30 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Hi everyone, First of all best of seasons greetings, been looking at Grand Scenic from a well known car supermarket, year old petrol dynamic 7 seater for £7700, low mileage. Been reading the forum on the diesel French engines, and basically been put off any modern common rail engine, and poor dealer knowledge on these if they go wrong.
  • Vectra Advice 9 May 2004 (Forum)
Hi, I\'m thinking of buying a 1yr old (03) Vectra SRi from one of the Supermarkets and and wondered if anyone has any advice on these cars - I\'ve heard and read mixed reports, most negative ones being about image which I\'m not too concerned about. I\'m not sure whether to go for the 2.2 petrol or diesel.

  • Ford Mondeo Estate 61 plate - Ford 1.6TDCi & engine malfunction - limp home mode 1 Jan 2014 (Forum)
As this has happened twice in 4 months the garage made some further calls to Ford who told them that the additives that supermarkets add to diesel are not the same as the additives big brands add to diesel.   So although I'm doing nothing wrong buy using supermarket diesel when you mix it with big brand diesel it causes a "gelling" in the fuel filter which reduces fuel pressure which the engine does not like, hence engine malfunction.

  • Peugeot 306 2.0D 28 Oct 2003 (Forum)
It needs to be cheap to run, comfy on motorways, have ABS, Air Con and 5 doors. I've seen quite a few 306 2.0 Meridian's with about 35k - 45k on them at a Car Supermarket. Can anyone let me know if these diesel's are a bad/good buy? Or, the 1.8 petrols? Any experience / advice appreictaed. Thanks.

  • Ford Focus III (2008 - ) - Focus 1.6 TDCi or 1.8 TDCi 27 Feb 2009 (Forum)
We are looking to source through Ford Direct again. I fancy the Focus 3 Titanium Estate in Tango Orange! Greys and blues seem to show those supermarket scratches. Ford Direct seem to have mostly Titanium 1.8 TDCi's and 2.0 petrols, few 1.6 diesels or petrols. I quite like the thought of the diesel due to much better fuel economy and cheaper tax.
