Volvo V50 injector failure - van you help?

I've had this car for three years and it has done just under 60,000 miles.
During that time it has has various problems (sound system replaced, clutch and mass balance flywheel replaced, alarm system replaced, leaking front suspension replaced) all resolved under warranty.

Now, the other day, I filled up with diesel at a well known supermarket and within a mile or two the 'Reduced Engine Performance' light flashed on and the car went into limp mode. This happened a few more times whilst I nursed the car home. It was already booked in for a service at the local Volvo agents anyway so I mentioned this to them when I took the car in.

The service was completed and their diagnostic equipment didn't apparently show up any error codes.

After further diagnostics they called me to advise that all four injectors needed replacing and that they were 100% certain that this was the problem but we're not sure of the cause. I asked them if they had changed the fuel filter and they said that they would do that as part of the repair. So, here I am, faced with a bill I excess of £2500 when they finish the work next week.

I certainly shall not be buying any more Volvos but wonder if you would be able to comment on this. I have spent all of my working life as an engineer ( albeit in a different discipline) but find this all a bit fishy.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Why did you fill up at a Supermarket? Though there have been a lot of injector failures on this Ford/PSA engine, the reason is usually duff fuel. It might be worth getting the fuel in the tank analysed, but the process of proving that this particular fuel from this particular supermarket was responsible could be long and involved.
