  If the first compact Mercedes-Benz, the 190E, was renowned for its almost indestructible build quality, its successor was better known for all the wrong reasons. The 'W202' generation of C-Class may have been a far more agile and arguably more handsome car, but it lacked the 'W201' 190's cockroach-like resilience to destruction.

  Mrs Shepherd added: 'The Service Care plan protects against inflation, so if the cost of parts or labour increases, the price of their servicing will remain the same.' The Service Care plan is offered on most Mercedes cars up to seven-years old, with AMG models not included. All work is carried out at official Mercedes-Benz workshops.

  It is harnessed however in the style and luxury of a cabriolet configuration, to create a highly sought-after Grand Tourer. Developing the 220S, Mercedes-Benz’ 220SE model was boosted by a fuel-injected version of the 2.2-litre overhead-camshaft straight sixengine, with maximum power increased from 106 to 115bhp, and while top speed remained unchanged at around 100mph, there was a noticeable improvement in acceleration with the 0-60mph time being reduced by two seconds.

  Mercedes Benz has announced UK prices of its revamped S Class and CL, and also of the awesome new 476bhp E55AMG. The E55AMG gets to 60mph in less than 4.5 seconds and is electronically limited to 155mph, but could be capable of 190mph plus with the restrictor unhooked.
