  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 06 1.9 Hydro hybrid fuel improvement for better mp 18 Dec 2009 (Forum)
    Does anyone have any experience of how well these work and if they last? For an investment of several hundred pounds (including the EECU to combat my ECU) I think I'm looking at a 2 year payback if I get 20% imporvement in fuel efficiency (25,000 miles and £1.05/l) Has anyone had any insurance issues? Are they removable to move to a replacement car when the current one finally pack in, hopefully in 8-10 years more at least.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 98 1.6 wont start 24 Oct 2009 (Forum)
    had a look at my friends 306 as the electric windows wernt working, i disconnected the battery and began to search for the problem, i noticed a fuse had blown and a few wires had broken, i put in a new fuse and reconnected the wires and the windows worked fine. i then reconnected the battery and tried to start the car but it wouldnt go and the central locking had stopped working. i looked in my haines manual as i didnt no where to start i followed the instructions and cleaned and sprayed all the connections with wd40. i then took one of the plugs out came to find there was no spark. ive was told the immobiliser had shut and wasnt allowing the ecu to send power and cause a spark becuase the key wasnt being recognised. so i tried the spare but still no joy. just wondered if anyone had any idea as my friend is desperate for the car. many thanks.
  • Volvo 850 (1992 - 1996) - How important is ABS? 8 Jul 2009 (Forum)
    Hi all, I recently picked up an 850 T5 estate. I'm in the process of repairing the ABS ECU (a known fault with this model- dry joints need resoldering), and consequently the ABS is disabled at the moment. I'm hoping to have it done and refitted by the weekend, but things are rather busy at the moment and that might not happen.
  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - 06 1.4 abs esp arrr! 28 Jun 2009 (Forum)
    This is a regular problem with VW cars I am told . I read on a forum that turning the ignition on and off many times should clear the fault and ecu will eventually recognise the new ABS pump.
  • Subaru Forester II (2002 - ) - 02 2.0 Cutting out 31 Jan 2009 (Forum)
    It has been regulary serviced and I have recently swopped the sensors from another vehicle and the fault persists. No code is held in the ECU and only once has the engine management light briefly appeared but the memory holds no info? The car has been fitted with an inline computer whilst driving and this again shows as no fault.
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 1998 1.6 Engine Revs by itself 23 Jan 2009 (Forum)
    There is the throttle position sensor by the linkage and I am wondering if this could be the problem or is it the ECU ? Any other suggestions would be welcome as everyone that I have spoken to does not have any idea.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 04 1.8 Slightly Poor Fuel Consumption 18 Dec 2008 (Forum)
    I have had an engine tuning (proper tuning, not boy racer job) to try and improve the fuel economy. The ECU settings were changed and new spark plugs were fitted. It has made a different to engine, feels a lot smoother, but the economy hasn't really changed. Anyone got any tips of what modifications i could possibly do to improve the economy.
  • Ford C-MAX (2003 - 2010) - C-Max 1.6 TDCI engine cut out 13 Dec 2008 (Forum)
    She ALWAYS restarts after cut out and electrics do not seem to be affected. Is this a sensor issue (throttle?), ECU update issue or Fuel Pump issue, my local mechanic has tested the system twice and a fuel pressure problem appears (among others), the filter has been changed by him, but not fixed problem. PLEASE HELP, D
  • Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 1999 1.6 Petrol - Cutting Out 11 Sep 2008 (Forum)
    If warm and i stop the engine it starts again fine. Economy is unchanged and recent full service has made no difference. No codes to read from ECU so i am wondering if anyone has any ideas? thanks

    Im just wondering if anyone has any thought before i take it to another garage tomorrow. I read some things about fuel injectors and ECU's. If the amplifier isnt the problem what is it likely to be? Many Thanks
  • Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - 1.8 QG18DE engine. Erratic revving and EWL. 20 Nov 2007 (Forum)
    I can do this with the Alfa and it doesn't store a fault code, but In so far as I can remember the Nissan ECU stores the code and does not clear until it was reset. Thanks for any assistance you can give a now ex-member. { SLT and moved from Discussion. }
  • Design faults old and new which have caused misery 27 Aug 2007 (Forum)
    These range from the famous VAG "Relay 109" to the failures of instrument panels (usually in parts), switch panels and some ECUs. The German manufacturers seem to have more than their fair share of these. Solder has no strength in fatigue - 6 bends and a stick of it is broken. Badly designed electronic assemblies suffer from fatigue as they are thermally cycled - the stress reversals ensure premature unit failure due to broken (not dry) joints. 659.
  • Just got a mini cooper - what to watch? 24 Sep 2006 (Forum)
    Was really pleased that I got the same trade in as I bought the car for 2 years ago, especially as it has starting issues that has been put down to fuel pump and ECU!!! Anyway is there anything specific I should be keeping an eye out for in terms of problems and what is the best way to ensure it lasts for quite some time. Currently done 44K and BMW are looking after the servicing free until either 2011 or 80,000 miles.

    I've read other peoples postings on the same problem but being a complete dougnut when it comes to anything but driving the thing I don't understand what AFN, ECU,EGR IIRC or any of that means so if anyone could explain what I should try to resolve this problem I would be eternally grateful.Cheers Yours ( a complete dougnut on vehicles) Barty {Subject header amended, as per one of the sticky messages at the top of the page - DD}
  • vw golf markIV stdi engine cut out 31 Mar 2006 (Forum)
    It first manifested itself as a mild engine/revving vibration just on the point of coming to a standstill whilst decelerating - once the car is stationary the engine idles ok. This vibration seems worse when the engine is warm. I have had ECU electronically checked and it shows no fault codes. Fuel filter also changed. During the last couple of weeks the engine has just cut out about 5 times when driving. The revs suddenly drop and the engine cuts out.
  • Mercedes 190e 2.0 auto idling problem 24 Apr 2005 (Forum)
    If the car is on the driveway and idling it is fine (apart from sometimes hunting) and it will tick over when engaged in "drive" or "reverse" - it is only when actually driving the car that it stalls. I have had the ECU checked - OK, cleaned the idle control valve (+changed it over for another second hand one), checked the temp control sensor (+changed that over), also checked the over voltage relay; and replaced the lambda sensor.
  • Weired Golf GTI problem 3 Dec 2004 (Forum)
    Above 2000rpm the fuse blows again! On both occasions it has gone to two different garages who disconnected the ECU and took it to VW to test out. No fault was found with it and when it was replaced the fault goes away... until the next time...... I've got a mk3 golf also and looking at my Haynes manual it seems the fuse for the fuel pump shares the same circuit as the lamda heater.

    In 2.5 years and 82k miles I have had about 4 instances of the glow plug light flashing and the car taking two or three goes to start plus one instance where it went into 'emergency mode', I drove it to the dealer and they reprogrammed the ECU while I waited. Today I had a different occurance, the glow plug light went out as normal however both the yellow frost and red ice warning lights stayed on even though it was 9degC by the outside temp indicator (they normally go out 4 or 5 seconds after the ignition is switched on unless the outside temp is 3degC or below).
