Black smoke under power, some do, some don't. 30 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I followed SWMBO home the other day, and the hilux diesel (3.0d4d) is exactly the same, not a trace of any smoke even under full power kickdown, i put ours down to the millers..;) Neither of these vehicles is lacking in torque, so its not that the engines are being starved of fuel, why can some makers diesels run clean and others not? -

Reliable diesels - is there such a thing? 16 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Hi, Can anyone recommend a reliable diesel engine? It seems everything I read at the moment worries me. I've a (very) unreliable Ford Focus estate which, over the past 6 months has cost me more than £1,000 to keep on the road and has been off-road at the garage for more than 5 weeks - it's had ECU and fuel injection problems, clogged valves...you name it.... -
Smoke and stuttering on Diesel Fiesta 11 Sep 2002 (Forum)
As a bit of background I took it back to the garage who did an emissions test and cleared a blockage on the air filter outlet (was 4.9+ before, now less than 2.5), but no fixed. They now reckon on using Diesel Fuel ADditive to clean the injectors and to come back in 6 weeks if not better. This sounds like a fob off to me. All help gratefully received. -
Citreon picasso - Advice on a car that fits 3 isofix 3 Jul 2023 (Forum)
Hi I currently have a bmw 1 series diesel 2016, it has been great, low tax, low on fuel and had no issues with it at all, so am I really sad to be having to look for something else but I really need a 3 isofix or 3 full adult seats at the back. -
Travelling to a place of work - Vol 1 29 Apr 2020 (Forum)
I have been travelling 60 miles each way (80% motorway) to my place of work and it roughly takes me 1hr - 1hr 15 mins each way. I travel in a 2.0 diesel montego and roughly get about 45 mpg and it works out to about £45-£50 per week in fuel. What distance and time do you all have to travel to get to work, what car, and how much fuel do you need? -
Citroen Xsara Picasso - wont start 24 Jun 2015 (Forum)
I discovered a fault soon after that sometimes it would cut out and not start or just wouldnt start at all. for some reason i pulled the diesel fuel pipe off the filter housing and then replaced it and it started and worked perfect for 2-3 weeks and would then fail to start and would pull pipe off then put back on would always start again and run perfect, then today it wouldnt start did same but pulled pipe then replaced but fires up 1st key for a second then wont start at all ,would the fuel rail pressure sensor valve (i think its called)cause this ,any ideas would be appreciated -
Honda Civic City CTDi - Loss of power and starting problems 8 Sep 2014 (Forum)
The glowplug warning light comes on intermittnently. My mechanic has changed the crankshaft sensor and fuel injectors but this has not corrected the problem. He suggests it might be a problem with the fuel pump but more likely the ECU. My only option is to take the car to Honda - but before I do, is anyone aware of this problem and what the solution might be (and the likely cost to do so). -
Renault Espace (2002 - ) - Is the auto box a Renault or Nissan unit ? 3 Feb 2014 (Forum)
I've read many tales of Renault auto boxes going 'south' and indeed many a Renault 2.2 and 3.0 diesel's top end self destructing, plus turbo and fuel pump probs too. At 3 years old it will be out of warrenty. I want a Grand Esapce that we give me the least trouble. Fuel consumption, not too big an issue, as I'll only do 5 to 8k miles per year. -
volvo v70 2.4D Automatic D5 - poor performance 30 Jan 2014 (Forum)
It starts ok and idles smoothly however when putting the foot on the gas the pick up is slow and has no kick down, it then slowly gets upto speed. the speedo lagging the rev counter. As I use the motorway for my commute it does improve except for the climbs where it just stays at about 60. My first thought is that I have contamined fuel so I am busy burning that off before refilling with a better diesel, my question is what should I consider looking into next if its not the fuel -

Taxation of Veggie Oil. 10 Dec 2007 (Forum)
>> Apparantly the law has been relaxed on the use of veg oil as a fuel. >> You can use upto 2500 litres without paying duty. That's a common misconception and not correct. Producers of "fiscal quality bio-diesel" are exempt from paying duty on production of less than 2500lts a year for their own use. -
Rover 420SLDi Turbo 1 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Following a full refill I drove 137 miles and filled it up again, on that calculation I achieved 66mpg. Or is there a defect in the fuel metering system, I am not familiar with diesel technology. There does not seem to be any engine fault, it runs and pulls effortlessly with no sign of engine distress. Thanks in advance. -
Ford TDDi safe bet vs TDCi? 27 May 2003 (Forum)
As the odd Mondeo TDDi pops up occasionally in places like Motorpoint I'd be interested to know if they were fairly trouble free in comparison to the TDCi. Anybody out there own one (TDDi)? If so, I'd love to hear your goods and bads - IE fuel economy, problems etc. On a side note what about the 3 current diesels in the focus. Comments? Cheers -
Mazda 6 - Mazda 6 Wont Fire 17 Aug 2010 (Forum)
After reading loads of threads I think I know the answer but I guess I'll find out by asking direct. My Mazda 6 2L Diesel, 53 plate, wont fire. It turns over just fine but will not fire. Changed the glow plugs, checked fuel is going to the injectors (it is), fuses OK, fuel filter cleaned. Local garage (not dealer) isn't getting any fault codes. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 97 1.9 Suddenly Wont Start! 27 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Bought a 1997 1.9 Peugeot 306 diesel last week for knocking about in, grand little runner and is frugal on the fuel, however this morning after fitting a new stereo (turned out to be broken) it won't start. I refitted the new stereo to no avail, I disconnected the battery in an attempt to reset the immobiliser to no avail, I checked all the fuses and they're all fine, for some reason the fuel gauge reads empty despite the fact I filled it last night! -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 2.0 Fuel Supply Problem? 20 Aug 2009 (Forum)
By the time the truck arrived, the driver could drive the car on and off OK. The car has done 170,000 miles and as far as I know has not had the fuel filter replaced. Could this be the problem? Any advice would be appreciated -
Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - High fuel consumption 28 May 2008 (Forum)
I have an 'R' registered VW Passat 1.8 20 valve, which i bought 2nd hand from a local VW dealer. It's really thirsty on fuel - even though it's only a 1.8 20 valve. I have been watching the on board trip computer - which gives readings of 20 - 30 mpg during town driving. Sorry i can't give an exact figure of how thirsty the car is - but it seems alot more thirsty than 20 - 30mpg - and it's only 1.8 - my previous Passat 1.8 diesel by contrast was brilliant (but noisy!).
