  • Rav 4 - Considering an SUV type 22 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I also frequently need to drive over quite hilly terrain to work , narrow lanes which can have surprising conditions, to get to work. But reasonable running costs, reliability realy important, and my buget is £10K ish plus trade in. Any one have any advice of any other considerations or if my 'ideal' something like a 3yr old RAV with 30K miles is realistic ? My annual mileage is about 10,000
  • Accident Victim's Experiences 2 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I wondered whether anyone else has been through a similar experience particularly as regards the accident investigation.  My problems started with the police who failed to speak to two important witnesses to the accident both at the scene and later.  When the case got to court the other driver gave a different version of events which convinced the magistrates and he got off with driving without due care and attention.
  • Which smallish 'proper' auto for driving school? 22 Aug 2009 (Forum)
and the indicators alone rule that out, and i'm none too sure about very modern Diesel with all that slow work anyway. This will be a purchase, not leasing, so a reliable long termer is important. Thoughts please?
  • Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 97 2.0 Failed Aircon Compressors - Bypass Pulleys 24 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Just thinking on this, googling reveals a healthy supply of bypass pulleys (basically an idler pulley mounted on a plate which bolts straight on to the compressor mounts) in the US for common US vehicles and several Asian imports. There doesn't seem to be anything comparable here and we're stuck with the expensive replacement compressor. Or am I wrong and just not looking hard enough? I'd have though there's be a market for such things here as aircon becomes more and more common and cars with it get older.
  • Awkward dealer 6 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I cant understand why he cant print a copy of the details there and then and hand them over if they are on the database. Does this history exist? Is he just plain incompetent at his job? How important would it be to have this info? Anyone any suggestions other than to keep badgering the guy for the paperwork?
  • Peak Oil 1 May 2008 (Forum)
Apart from the article above (written by an American) other reasons to economise fuel use on all fronts ie domestic too: global warming do our bit to help the balance of trade fuel security (less reliant on imports)
  • FIAT Ulysse II (2003 - ) - Replacing MPV - Fiat Ulysse anyone? 9 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Whatcar.com recommends the JTD as the one to go for though we could get a petrol version of same age/price with half the miles on it. That said mileage isn't too important to us as we will buy based on the overall condition of the car. I am tempted to go with another Galaxy as it has been a fine, does-exactly-what-it-says-on-the-tin sort of car - though it does seem boring to the buy the same car again (this would be a first for me).
  • Long term new car purchase Volume 1 9 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Im toying with the idea of buying a brand new car, to keep 15-20 years ( legislation permitting ). My budget will be no more than £10k, economy is very important as is emissions. It must be big enough to cope with family life at a stretch ( 2 kids ). Id also prefer a 5dr what with car seats etc being so bulky. Obviously the car will do some serious mileage and im used to fairly bullit-proof reliability as I get with my Suzuki van.
  • Rover - K-series head gasket failure prevention? 22 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Repeated expansion and contraction presumably stretches the bolts very slightly, and if the distance between the threads and the heads of the bolts is great, the stretching will be more pronounced. Might it be as important to do this at 100,000m on any engine as changing the cam belt?
  • mondeo battery warning light stays on 6 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Also the fella at the garage mentioned something about some pipes being left off of the alternator but that its not that important at the moment whats he on about?
  • S-Type Jag- advice requested... 6 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Any solid gold tips to spot an S-type that's had a haircut? Best variant? Would I be better off with a XJ6/XJ8 (size isn't important, in this case)? I've read the car by car breakdown info, but would like to hear personal experience too, if possible.
  • Classic categories 27 Jan 2006 (Forum)
The categories that suggest themselves are: Production classic (examples: Model T Ford, first true mass produced car; late-30s Lancia Aprilia, steel monocoque, compact V4, rear non-synchromesh 4-speed transaxle, all independent suspension). Styling classic, styling being important to many (examples: first Raymond Leowy pushme-pullyu Studebaker 1948?; DS Citroen). Speed classic (examples: chain-drive Frazer Nash; Porsche 356: both oversteerers that do a lot with a little, cars with edge).
  • Which Diesel - yes inc Mondeo! 2 Nov 2005 (Forum)
My brother's car has been written off and he needs to get new car. Looking at a diesel. Now, strangely, price is not too important (about 9k), as his friend works in a very large dealership and can basically get him "staff " discount or something along those lines. So whatever the deal is, it will be good. He is looking at less than a year old cars and looking to keep for proabably at least 4 years.
  • flashing glow plug light Golf MK2 17 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Have spent all day trying to find any other broken connections, doesnt seem to be any, anybody any ideas, this was a low import model according to Haynes,(1600 GTD) so I only have a manual for a Golf petrol. An Amreican site talked about a faulty coolant sensor, but they were on about the 1.9 tdi, there must be a coolant sensor on my car as GP light doesnt come on when engine is hot, any ideas were it might be located.
  • New Van ? 29 Aug 2005 (Forum)
My isuzu manages motorway speeds up to 95mph so this sort of ability would be great (fuel economy is not important). Paul
  • scratch repair 10 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I figure £10 to have a go myself is not a bad plan because if I bodge it local paint shop will still want £170 etc. and the paint will be handy for stone chips. Some internet articles stress the importance of thinning the touch up paint. Words of wisdom please........Including but not limited to recommendations on a good thinner.
  • Bargain big saloon advice please 24 May 2005 (Forum)
My budget is only £500 to £1,000 and I want something comfortable, reliable and pleasant to drive. Because of my low mileage, fuel economy isn't so important. So I've narrowed my choice down to either a Toyota Camry 2.2 or V6 from around 1992 to 1994, or a Saab 9000 2.0 or 2.3 ecopower from the same period. I've seen sub-100k mileage, FSH examples of both of these in my price range - and studied the breakdown on this excellent site - but are there any other options I should consider?

  • Sourcing parts abroad 1 Apr 2005 (Forum)
The cost from them (inc. air shipment to the UK)? Just £58! - quite some saving. I've not got it yet, but even if I get hit with some UK import tax it will still be a worthwhile saving. They have the part in stock and reckon maximum 10 days delivery to UK. My local dealer wanted 3-4 weeks to get the part, but 'couldn't promise'! What is going on in this country when it is faster and cheaper to source a part from a tiny country of 3 million people on the other side of the world?
