Ford - Powershift all bad? 22 May 2024 (Forum)
I would only be buying a vehicle with a service history with receipts, and I've had DSGs for years with no issues so am well versed in the importance of maintenance schedules for "problematic" gearboxes. Obviously the risk is not knowing what's come before - would there be recommendations on what to look for in test drives? We're a family of 5 and often need space for friends/family, and I'm restricted by an automatic license so no real leeway on the requirements (I dislike SUV types). -
Any - How long does an exhaust pipe last? 7 Oct 2023 (Forum)
I’ve owned cars for 30 odd years now and in that time, I’ve replaced one exhaust pipe on a Japanese import Nissan Figaro that we’ve had for 18 years. Have had both petrol and diesel cars (pre DPF, with a nice lining of soot in the exhaust and with DPFs) and in perhaps 350,000 miles over that 30 odd years, aside from one exhaust for the Figaro, I’ve never replaced any exhaust components, even on cars that I’ve run for longer than 10 years. -
BMW 5 Series Touring - BMW 5....Merc E....Kia Sorento....Peugeot 5008 12 Feb 2021 (Forum)
BMW 520 Touring (possibly Xdrive) Mercedes E220 AMG Estate, Peugeot 5008 Kia Sorento GT Line S Anyone have any thoughts, or possible alternatives! Reliability, comfort, good resale values are some important qualities to me as opposed to badge appeal, hence my current diverse list! Thanks for taking the time to read my post! ?? -
Any - Asking for insurance refunds 14 Apr 2020 (Forum)
In my case it would be about £15.50 for a full month refund and how much to process that, issue cheques postage etc. No I'm not going to ask for one. There are far more important matters to deal with at the moment. Stay safe everyone ORB -
Headlights 4 Dec 2019 (Forum)
None can compete with the superb lights on the poverty spec 12 year old Panda believe it or not. Our Corolla is mediocre, with I think some strange bulbs too. This is such an important aspect that doesn't get much review but was wondering which models out there are decent. I drove a 5 series a few years ago and was astonished how poor the lights were. Hopefully when I buy a van, I will be able to see a but better at night! -
Faulty used car - small claims court. 8 Nov 2019 (Forum)
The was fine, however when I arrived at their mechanics it resembled more of a scrap yard than a garage. It was definitely not a place I would like to perform such an important repair like an engine rebuild on a car that I had just purchased. I telephoned the seller and explained that I am unhappy with this and would like a refund. They refused. I asked if he was happy to pay for the repair then could I take it my usual garage. -
V5C What To Do With It? 11 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Hi lads. I am from Ireland and planning to import a vehicle from the Uk in a couple of days time. My understanding from online research is that I need the V5C form in order to register it when I get it back to Ireland. My understanding is also that the dealer usually fills in some section of this V5C document and sends it to the DVLA (I think indicating that the car has been exported). -
NIP - CCTV Evidence 27 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Today, on the 26th, I received an email from the police saying that after reviewing the CCTV they believe they have found the vehicle who hit my car and would send the registered keeper a NIP. Edit: It is important to mention that the CCTV footage was only made available to the police on the 15th of October. After reading online about NIPs, it says that these should be sent within a 14 day period after the alleged accident. -
Any - Cheap Reliable People Carrier 16 Aug 2017 (Forum)
I know a couple in their thirties who decided a few years ago they needed a people carrier. This has nor been a success! The first was a grey import diesel Lucida that blew its engine after a year and was sold for peanuts. After that they got a Galaxy automatic diesel on HP. Now after an expensive year (injectors and other issues after the relatively short warranty expired) it is another non-runner. -
Audi A4 Avant - AA warranty problems 7 Apr 2017 (Forum)
Local Audi garage in Devon (good reputation & not an expensive main dealer) investigated & the work totalled £800 - however the AA warranty people have weadeled their way out of most of it by quoting for a cheap chinese crap imported part that garage rightly refused to fit + low labour cost + ridiculously short time allowance to fit it. Hence they only paid £300 (2 weeks later) leaving me with £500 bill. -
All - Luxury Car Desire... 18 Jan 2017 (Forum)
When making that all important decision of buying that new luxury car, what motivates you to choose the £60,000 car, over the £10,000 economically friendly purchase? They both do the same job, don’t they? -
Indicators - the clue is in the name. 9 Sep 2016 (Forum)
I am a freak. A car will fail an MOT for busted indicators so I know they must be important. Help. Ocasionally I do see a blinker light working on another car and my hopes are raised but immediately dashed. Alas it was a confirmation of the manouvre rather than an alert for a pending manouvre. -
Citroen C3 diesel exclusive - warning lights on dashboard 12 Feb 2016 (Forum)
This happens every half minute or so until the car warms up. Are these things very important? I hesitate to take it to either of the nearest citroen dealers because they always use any excuse to rip me off and sell me things that prove to be unneccessary. (The disadvantage of being a woman with a car and presumed to have no common sense). -
Ford Focus 1.6 auto. - Changing Insurance company 26 Jan 2016 (Forum)
I know the broker needs to take their cut but if the broker cannot get near (within £100) of the quotes I get, I am thinking of looking elsewhere for cover. I know it is important to make sure the cover is the same. For those of you that have changed in the past, how difficult is it and what will the new company need as proof from me? -
Best Used 5-seat MPV? 17 Oct 2015 (Forum)
We like a versatile vehicle which we can take our friends in -- so good legroom in the back for adults is important. So is the abillity to carry large bulky things occasionally --- hence MPV (or possibly estate). Probably looking for something two/three years old with less than 30,000 miles. We don't need 4-wd but we do like a quieter car -- long motorway journeys sometimes to visit family. -
VW - Trust in car makers 27 Sep 2015 (Forum)
I know we have a thread running on the issue of VAG fiddling emissions but this is a question about whether or not you would buy a VAG car in the future. Personally, trust in an organisation is important to me and I would probably not buy a VAG car for at least 5 years until I saw that they had got their act together. For me this was a deliberate fiddle by the management team (not sure how high up) to con people into thinking their cars are something they are not. -
Jeep Grand Cherokee - what 4x4 £11k 22 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Once value of car under £6k found independants didnt want to know the Jeep - 15k miles a year (no real off-road driving), so expecting between 45-60k miles of use - i am not worried about depreciation as like the jeep i will use it for 3.5 years and then bin it in an auction - i am not worried about fuel. WORK PAYS FOR FUEL!!!! This is an important consideration Any top 3's that spring to mind -
Mazda - Trip computer query 4 Feb 2014 (Forum)
I seem to remember that there are 4.545 litres to the gallon but trying to convert that to gallons whilst driving through leafy Cheshire is more than I can manage. Is there an easy rule of thumb to make the conversion and (possibly more important) is there a work around to convert the trip computer to 'miles/gallon'. I can't find anything in the Owner's Handbook. The other readings ('average speed 'and 'fuel left before empty' are in Imperial measures). -
Volvo V50 Diesel - Wise buy? Volvo V50 1.6 Diesel (better than 2.0l?) 16 Aug 2012 (Forum)
A few horror stories around the internet, which seem to centre on the 2.0litre diesel(poor fuel economy, engine probs) I wonder if the 1.6 diesel unit is a better, more reliable unit. It should also have better fuel economy. Monthly running costs are very important to me, I can't afford a car which is going to let me down. I do about 1k miles/month. Does anyone have a view on these cars? -
ANY - advice for £2-£3k purchase 18 Mar 2012 (Forum)
I have at most £3k but dont really want to go over £2.5 to cover for future repairs / servicing etc So any opinions? is milage as important for cars of this age? also thought about an almera as a sensible but not exciting choice as I want somthing reliable so I can save up for something exciting in a couple of years. thanks in advance!
