why doesn't anyone develop something like this? 20 Jul 2010 (Forum)
By making the drive electric only, no gearbox would be required and the generator would be decoupled from road speed meaning that it could run at its most efficient settings all of the time. Driver controls could determine parameters like electric-only running for short periods or adjust the amount of battery reserve to be maintained for economy or performance. -
BMW 5-Series E60 - Diesel Dilemma 29 Mar 2010 (Forum)
In desperation I changed from filling up with diesel at my local Supermarket to a BP station, putting 2/3 tank of regular diesel to fill up. Almost immediately the car is running smoother, not quite as well as 3 months ago, but is this because I still had 1/3 of a tank of previous fuel. Will continue to run out the old fuel and top up with the BP and see what transpires. My engine is the 525d, 19inch alloys, low profile not runflats, I have a skinny spare. -
Audi A4 (1995 - 2000) - 99 1.9t water in passenger footwell 7 Sep 2009 (Forum)
I have recently had the plastic facia around the wiper arms replaced and found the front passenger footwell gets wet with water - this runs down from behind and underneath plastic facia to glovebox near the central housing for the gear selector. Could this be from heater matrix? - have already tried checking hole underneath battery - this is clear and water runs out through to floor. -
Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 93 1.2 Won't start from cold 26 Aug 2009 (Forum)
When it eventually starts, it coughs and splutters (and is generally lumpy) for about 2 minutes and then runs fine. Once the engine has warmed up, it runs perfectly, although there may be a slight increase in fuel consumption. Following advice on this site, I have changed the CTS, but this has had no effect. -
Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 00 1.8 Escort Van poor starting 28 Nov 2008 (Forum)
During the last week or so it has become very hard to start in the morning, the battery cranks the engine fine but it just won't fire up. Eventually after a lot of smoke it starts, then will run and start fine all day (doesn't smoke once running). I figured this was glow plugs as it coincided with the cold weather, so changed them. The ones that came out were very sooty and pretty old. -
Running low on oil - cause damage? 28 Apr 2008 (Forum)

Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 1995 1.2 8v - Hot Starting Problem 19 Apr 2008 (Forum)
When it's completely cold it starts first time with no throttle. Once the car is warm or even just run for a few minutes it's very hard to start. It will start eventually but wont even fire until you push the throttle way down. It will then catch but misses a lot until you can get the revs up. After that it runs fine. -
Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 2003 1.6 - Engine lubrication when running on LPG 19 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Manufacturers tell us that their petrol has lubricants and other additives included in it for the protection of the engine, the valves, valve seats etc. When running on LPG, what lubricates/protects the engine, the valves and valve seats? I ask this because I have been told LPG has no lubricants etc., included. Is that correct? I manually switch the fuel types on a regular basis between petrol & LPG as advised. -
Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - 1994 1.3 Auto - Starting Problem 11 Dec 2007 (Forum)
At start up each morning the engine gives off a large amount of exhaust fumes- its not just clearing condensation but is a lot of unburnt fuel. After a minute this clears. The engine then runs smoothly though there is a fairly sharpp jeky respose to the accelerator. 2. The main problem is after this initial running of the engine restarting is difficult and the engine has to be rested for a few minutes after each firing up to get it to restart. -
Zafira 1.9td exhaust overheating? 12 May 2007 (Forum)
I bought a new Zafira 1.9 (120PS) diesel last year which is just due for its first service. The last few weeks I've noticed that the exhaust system occasionally seems to be running very hot, even after a fairly short run. There's the smell of very hot metal and a loud ticking noise as it cools. As well as all this the performance at slow speeds is a lot lumpier than it used to be. -
Which used Ford Focus? 8 May 2007 (Forum)
Now all I need to do is work out which one! Budget is £3K + trade in worth approx £500-£600. She does a bit of motorway, but mainly school runs and local visiting runs, so economy needs to be good, but she wants to at least be able to think about overtaking when she needs to, hence the 1.4 is out. I would happily consider a diesel, but it appears that only the Tddi diesel is in our price range and not the Tdci one. -
Help C5 brake pads gone wrong 27 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Pumped the pedal a couple of times which brought it up to the top so I thought good job done. then I started the engine up and the problem started. With the engine running after 10 seconds the pedal goes to the floor It pumps up hard take your foot off the pedal and 10 seconds later it goes to the floor. This only happens with the engine running. turn thr engine off and the pedal stops hard. -
Merc S Class. Have I gone mad? 19 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I may be getting a new car allowance, significantly more than I currently receive. This gets me thinking. I could be tight, run a car like I currently do and pocket the wonga. Alternatively... I'm thinking about buying a three/four year old diesel S-Class for about £18-£20K. My reasoning runs that in another three years I'll get about £10K for it, so depreciation will have been about £10K over three years, roughly double my Omega's depreciation (£8K over 5 years), but a price I'm willing to pay for a bit of luxury. -
Used Merc, Jag or BMW for £25k? 10 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I've never quite gone for the new shape BMW 5, a Range Rover is likely to be out of reach and too expensive to run. I may even end up with another E class of a similar age to the one I currently run. (and if I had no kids I would buy a 911!). Any ideas/views? Thanks! -
Honda i-CDTI mpg and running in 26 Apr 2006 (Forum)
I don't do much stop-start driving, and not much town driving. I suspect the above to be true, so my real question is - what should I do about it? Run at artificially high revs ont he motorway for a bit, make an effort to thrash it through the gears at other times, or what? Any suggestions will be gratefully received as I'm delighted with almost every other aspect of the car (although could someone please explain to me what on earth the point of electric seats is without a memory function????) -
Clio 1.2 Erratic running 19 Apr 2005 (Forum)
He has just been away for 2 weeks and had trouble getting it going when he came back, had to take the battery off a couple of times before it would start and run. At idle it occasionally misses, but a couple of times it just refuses to respond to the throttle, usually coming back after a moment or two. I wondered about coolant temp sensor, but it seems to idle at about 1200 cold, dropping back to 800 or so when warm as expected, and doesn't seem to be using excessive fuel. -
all - Synthetic fuels 31 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Germany is asking the EU to urgently review their ban on petrol and diesel engines and to consider running these cars on E-fuels. The engines would still emit carbon at the exhaust but a carbon offset at production of the new fuel would offset this. A device fitted to the engines would not allow the cars to run on petrol or diesel. -
Nissan Micra 2001. - Car losing a lot of power. 11 Feb 2022 (Forum)
Hi, I have a 1 litre Nissan Micra K11 2001. The problem that I have is the Engine Management Light has came on and the car is running very bad (severe lack of power). I took my car to the local mechanic and he plugged it into his diagnostic machine and it came up reading "Running Too Lean". I have renewed the spark plugs, fuel filter and the lambda sensor at the top of the manifold closet to the top of the engine. -
Ford C-MAX - Replace Skoda Fabia with Ford C Max or keep? 19 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Should we change our car? Which is likely to run problem free for longer or cost less in repairs? Anything else we should consider? Thanks in advance -
VW Golf Mk5 1.9TDI - Pressure in the coolant expansion tank 30 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Could there be air in the coolant system which is causing both of the above? The car is running fine and soon gets up to standard 90degC running temp. The coolant also hasn't been changed/emptied in the past 18mths that we've had the car.
