Auto Trader- the Nigerian connection 12 Mar 2009 (Forum)
One that was quite appealing was the Rover 75. I've always fancied one of the diesel Tourer models. They run for about 2K for a 01/02 plate. Nice car, from what I understand. Yesterday, my eye happened to fall on an 05 plate, for just over 2K. Advertised as FSH, low miles- generally too good to be true. The ad had a PHOTO of a hand-written note that advised potentials to contact the seller via an email address. -
Porsche Boxster 986 + Boxster S (1996 - 2004) - 'S' first impresions 1 Nov 2007 (Forum)
It's still a tortoise compared to the GT3 I had but its vastly more livable with. I had the roof down during the morning run, put about 40 miles on the clock on mostly B roads with a couple of short lengths of dual carriageway in between. Its definitely at its happiest on smooth roads but much less fussy about typical B road undulations than the Imprezza, where you're let with the feeling that there's rarely more than one wheel in contact with the tarmac for long periods of time. -
New car shortlist - who's going to help? 19 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Toyota Prius - if my driving was all in town I'd have one. Excellent in town and comfortable on a long run - but it's not at its best on motorways. Economy nothing special at motorway speeds, and accelerating to get up speed is as noisy as the B-class. I'm not a boy-racer but I like to get a move on, and this one is for very gentle drivers. -
G-Wiz no parking or congestion charges 10 Nov 2006 (Forum)
By the end of next year, however, old-tech lead-acid batteries will be overtaken by lithium-ion or other technology which has four times as much ?energy density?. This will enable electric powered vehicles to run at speeds of up to 75mph and travel 100 miles before re-charging is needed. But to some eyes, even more advanced electric powered vehicles will not wean motorists out of their fossil-fuel-powered cars. -
Recommend Me a Car 4 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I have a list of things I like/requirements that I would like to draw on my fellow Back Roomers knowledge for recommendations. Budget, <£3k Ideally no smaller than Focus sized-don't mind large cars though, as long as running costs not likely to be stupendous. Considered 'reliable' and able to take substantial mileage. Comfortable and decent enough for large miles. Must have reasonable power and performance-I would love Evo performance, but I will settle for something that has 'reasonable' performance i.e. engine and gearbox well suited to car, 0-60 <10s. -
Letter from the Colonies Vol.9 11 Aug 2005 (Forum)
But I feel Award of The Month must go to the pump attendant at the gleaming new gas station with air-conditioned mini-mart where I stopped, hopelessly lost in a remote part of Northern Luzon on my Harley 3 days ago, with a grumpy Growlette back-riding on a 400km run and complaining she had discovered her tailbone for the first time.. In that part of the world there is only one road and if you are not on it you are seriously lost. On asking the eager youth the name of the place where I was, he proudly drew himself up to his full 4 foot 10 in his nice crisp uniform and announced with the smile he must have been taught to deliver to idiot foreigners like me -- "you are at de Shell Gas Station Sir". -
Just another manic Monday..... 29 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Just about to leave for Uni on Monday morning, and bing bong, goes the door bell. I goes to the door to find a woman running down the path, and upon opening the door, she swung around and said: "eehhh, I?m so sorry mister, i've hit ya car!" I went out to have a look, and as I was coming down the path, she was saying "I think I? -

Mega Nostalgia 12 Oct 2001 (Forum)
This is one of the 1938 Mille Miglia team cars and is thought by all its owners to be the actual 220bhp 8C 2900B, chassis number 412031, engine number 422025 which won the race driven by Biondetti. Because the race was run in daylight, the car ran on its normal pair of headlights (the two lower lights were added for the 1938 Spa 24 hour race). The car was displayed on the Thompson and Taylor stand at the 1938 Motor Show, apparently not for sale. -
Buying a new car 22 Dec 2013 (Forum)
My current car is now nineteen years old, that’s not to say that there is anything wrong with it, it has been a great little car to own with very few problems and very low running costs for over 90000 miles. It is a Peugeot 106 diesel and has now covered nearly 123000 miles. It is cheap to insure and returns about 55 mpg without being careful. -
Fiat Doblo roadtest - V.long!!!!!!!!!! 9 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I would dearly love the best of both worlds the torque of the diesel, with the rev. range of the petrol. So whilst the diesel pulls well, I run out of puff early and the 0-60 stats confirm this. The car does it in about 13 seconds, the same as my clio. 2nd ? Ride and handling. I found this a little firmer that I am acustumed to, but that?s French cars for you. -
Fiat Bravo 1.6 multijet (2012) - Faulty radio and main dealer trouble! 17 Feb 2016 (Forum)
After a few calls back and forth one of his colleages called us stating that as I had their warranty, 3 yr extended with their company and run by Car Care Plan, I can should take the car to a local Fiat dealer and have the radio sorted that way. At this point the radio behaved itself for several weeks but I contacted my local dealer explained the problem and asked if they could do the warranty work. -
Audi A4 - Identical Fault code 65535 on ABS & Airbag Audi A4 9 Jun 2015 (Forum)
Although a part of me loathes the idea of scrapping my car as I firmly believe in repairing and recycling of all goods for as long as economically possible and besides the car runs very smoothly and has given me trouble free motoring for 7 years. I welcome any expert opinion and advice on the ABS and Airbag problems identifed from the VCDS fault codes. Many thanks. -
My Ford Fiesta Review 8 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Theres a road locally which banks to the left for about half a mile and it held the road extremely well round it and feels planted and sturdy as you zoom round a roundabout. Out on a dual carraigeway it still feels relaxed but anything past 75 and you start to feel it running out of pull, but thats ok as thats speeding so its illegal to go that fast anyway (smiles). It will go faster but its not as comfortable past 70-75ish. The ride on this zetec model may be firm but its not jarring like on the mk2 Focus Zetec. -
My question to an MP regarding Bio-diesel - Reply! 4 Feb 2011 (Forum)
One of my constituents owns a 2008 Volvo diesel-engined car that was the subject of a safety recall by Volvo owing to concerns that rising oil levels in the engine may cause the car to ‘self-fuel’, thus making the car run away without it being possible to turn the engine off. It appears this problem is not unique to Volvo, since another constituent has had the same problem with his Mazda 6 2.0tdi. -
Failing to provide drivers name (Section 172) 15 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I said it is as easy as me getting next doors car registration plate and reporting it going into the back of my, which he did say could be the case. I still do not know the girls names but Im presuming I have had a fued/run in maybe with 1 of them. Also the office offered me to admit it before it got too far (ie. court) but I said no I am not admitting it because it never happened. The call kind of ended with a 'stop phoning me without any evidence' tone. -
Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - 1.9TDi 136k miles, 2nd interim report 9 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Anyway, to sum up, I don't want to change it, I still enjoy driving it (unlike Pologirl's, it doesn't have a name!). I was planning to run it into the ground (my old company Passat Tdi has now turned 200k+) but the esp issue and the small leak are playing on my mind. But what could I change to? However that should be the subject of separate posting.... -
VW nightmare please advise. 24 Dec 2005 (Forum)
They say that they thought the water was coming in the front! OK so their 'intelligent' staff think that water can run down from the windscreen, into the footwell, then up the back seats and into the boot? Surely anyone knows the check the highest point for a leak first? So I have been trying to get the insurance company to sort out the problem. -
Postcard from Moscow 29 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Now they are but a dirty, worn out, and shabby image of what they once were. To Moscow's credit though, the Metro is by far the best run I have ever used with trains every 45-60 seconds throughout the day. Cheap, too (about 25p regardless of journey duration), but I guess that's because those with dosh take the Beemer. All the station names (and city street signs) are written in Cyrillic alphabet though, so this is not a western tourist friendly place. -
Byers questions Final part (hopefully) 2 May 2002 (Forum)
Even so, why does the Government not levy a taxable benefit in kind upon Ministers who use Government provided transport in the execution of their official, political and private business, just as it does for other drivers who could not undertake their jobs in an efficient manner without use of a car and do not have the Minister?s block exemption from benefit in kind tax. Government Policy A steady run down of public transport has resulted in the motor car being, for the majority, the only viable method of personal mobility, especially in rural areas. The Government?s own statistics show that over 80% of mileage travelled per person per year uses private road transport as opposed to all other methods including walking and air travel.
