  • Volkswagen Golf IV tdi - temp gauge 25 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Sometimes it seems to be rising and then goes back down again. Is it just a sensor or is the coolant just not getting hot enough. The heating system seems to work fine so I guess it must be electrical, Any suggestions anyone?
  • Volvo V40 11.9 tdi - Dodgy temp gauge 7 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Also - when he stops, the engine fans continue running at full speed and make a lot of noise. They continue for about 5 minutes after switching off. Car has plenty of coolant and is not overheating, could this just be a dodgy thermostat or sensor?
  • Peugeot 307 5dr Rapier 52plt - Water in L/H/F footwell 26 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Today noticed the L/H front footwell having a pool of water under the Rubber mat. Its not coolant water as the header tank is still at the same level as always. As far as I can see, the left hand heater vent under the windscreen is not blocked with debris looking through the mesh. Any clues ???

  • Honda Civic UK (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.6 Burning smell from top radiator hose 21 Jan 2010 (Forum)
After a motorway run I could smell coolant from front of car and an acrid smell from the top hose. There are no obvious leaks, and engine oil is in a clean state. The car has done 41k. Appreciate any informed suggestions. The car is still under warranty and is going in to the main dealer soon.

  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 2002 1.9TDI Temperature reading zero & no heating 29 May 2008 (Forum)

  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1994 Diesel 1905 Engine overheated 29 Mar 2008 (Forum)
    Drove the car to work and as pulling into parking bay at the works noticed engine sniffy with overheating smells. No lights came on. Cooling system had lost all coolant through leak. Engine will not start though does turns over. What is likely wrong will it ever go again. Regards Jim {year found via a forum search. Easier if you'd put it in in the first place}
  • Nissan Micra 1993 - cold starting 4 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Got a L Reg Nissan with 100,000 on clock - very reliable in summer, but in the winter it will not start on cold damp mornings - putting a blanket on the engine the night before solves the problem, but sometimes I forget and then it won't start !!!!! - anyone got any ideas of what it can be - wondered if it could be the coolant temp sensor - has anyone had similar problems with their old micra - love my little micra - apart from this, it is a great little car.
  • freelander rover engine h/g?? 6 May 2006 (Forum)
my mate as a freelander with the rover petrol engine think it is a 1.8, it is belching out grey smoke at start up and missfiring badly also using lots of coolant, the oil seems ok but there are no leaks so im suspecting head gasket? or do these alloy heads crack? he's hoping it's just the gasket!!. not done a commpression test yet but it's looking quite obvious, any idea of cost for head gasket/or replacement head???
  • FIAT Punto (1994 - 1999) - Heater Problem 8 Mar 2006 (Forum)
The heater matrix has just been replaced and the people who did it say my cylinder head gasket could be failing. The coolant level is on the max line. The engine temperature is the same as it always has been. Any one any ideas
  • Petrol or diesel? 28 Aug 2005 (Forum)
One thing that makes me choose petrol is the little-publicised deleterious effect on heater performance of the slower rate of warm-up of the diesel engine coolant, particularly at idle. (Caused, of course, by the greater fuel efficiency of the diesel engine ~ there, I've admitted it !) Parking outside overnight in frosty weather usually sorts the petrol men from the diesel boys. -- L'escargot by name, but not by nature.
  • Citroen ZX 1.4i (petrol) running hot 14 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Hi, can anyone give me some advice ahead of my weekly battle with my car. I have changed the therm. switch, therm valve, coolant fluid on my citroen and still it overheats. I have even gone to the lengths of using an easi-bleed system to get airlocks out of the system. I have bridged the switch on the electric fan and it works - what am i doing wrong??
  • Astra running very rough 27 Oct 2004 (Forum)
It has been in for a 60k service and all filters changed, I thought the fuel filter might have been clogged up, but the problem still exists May be just coincidence but I have noticed an airlock in the coolant since the problem started.
  • Rover 820 Head Gasket 22 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Hello All, I've Just purchased a 1993 Rover 820SLi. Oil and Coolant is leaking out of the side of the engine where the block and head meet (head gasket) Is my only option to change the head gasket (and is that all it will require...or is there more to them) to cure this problem as there is absolutely no oil and water mixing...just leaking out of the side quite severely.
  • Primera engine speed problem 16 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I had the head gasket recently replaced and I have experienced similar problems when it was overheating. This morning however the engine temp was normal and the coolant in the tank was normal. I checked the acc cable and it was ok. Can anyone suggest why this might have occurred?? Thanks in advance
  • Head Gasket 22 Jan 2003 (Forum)
I have a K reg Renault Clio thats covered a pretty good milage at just over 90k but my garage tells me that the cylinder head gasket has blown which certainly accounts for the coolant loss and the oil like mayonnaise! The rest of the car is in pretty good condition but I'm wondering if it is worth getting the head off(beyond my competence by a long way), getting a rebuilt engine or just getting it crushed.
  • Peugeot 405 rust? 27 Nov 2000 (Forum)
I have looked at a few 405 estates already, but have not seen any rust problems. Problems I have found are coolant leaks, heavy clutches on turbo diesels, leaky inboard driveshaft seals (gearbox oil leaking out) and rattling aux. drivebelt lensioners. Thanks in advance, Regards, Mike.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 00 1.4 Leaky waterpump, possible HGF 12 Oct 2009 (Forum)
wot that then'. After changing the rocker cover+sump+camshaft+crank seals, cam+ancilliary belts, waterpump, coolant, plugs, filters, fluids etc i thought we were good to go with perhaps the possibilty of oil leaking from the pulley end of the sump,, which i'd remedy with helicoilling the oil pump sump bolts. On start up all seemed fine and i let it warm up until it got to fan switch on time, i took a gander underneath and to my dismay there was coolant leaking from the pump area. on inspection it was coming from one of the holes which are machined into the aluminium body near the seals/bearing. i presume this is done so if the inner seal leaks the coolant doesn't get forced through the bearing and spew out over the belts but is channeled straight onto the floor.
