  • Octavia VS C Max 19 Feb 2005 (Forum)
We are thinking of swapping our Honda CRV petrol auto, for a Skoda Octavia Diesel auto or the C Max diesel auto. Has anyone got any opinions? Must be automatic and preferbly a diesel due to annual mileage of 20K. Also any feedback on which Octavia to look at? Old or New? Thanks Anne

  • saxo immobiliser 25 Sep 2004 (Forum)
To start my car i usually put the key in, enter a code then a green light flashes on the display and that means i can start the ignition. But the green light is automatically on when i put the key in the ignition initially. Basically it starts without entering the code. No code needed. Citroen Saxo 1.1 sx 1997 r -reg immobiliser in console. Please advise. Thanks.
  • BMW auto-box fault 17 Jan 2004 (Forum)
A friend of mine has an automatic gearbox fault on his 1990 BMW 520. When put into DRIVE, it will go only about 50 yards before the transmission disconnects and the engine revs freely. If he then selects REVERSE the car refuses to move ……until the front end is bounced up and down a few times!
  • Car radio in Ford. 1 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I have bought a CD player that plays by putting a tape thingie into the tape player however its really annoying as it keeps turning itself over automatically is there anything I can do that will allow me to play just one side of the tape and then turn it over manually? Its a real nightmare.
  • Peugeot 605 SV 3.0 - auto box problem 4 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Does anyone out there have a quick answer to an auto box problem ? My 605 has started 'jumping' the automatic gears by itself, even when travelling sedately on the flat in 'Drive'... could an ATF / filter change cure this or does it mean a strip-down and rebuild ? (Or, more likely, scrap the car !)
  • What auto? 16 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I have £600 to £1000 to spend on a cheap Automatic car for my partners business. I know this is not alot, but can anyone recommend a good reliable mid to large family car? (as she has to ferry kids around, school runs and day trips mostly!). I was thinking along the lines of either a Volvo 440 or maybe somthing else of similar size.
  • Towing Horses 15 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I'm not too keen on owning a 4wd due to the expense and dubious image but can I get away with a 'normal' car? Also a friend of mine was advised to get an automatic as it is better for towing. Is this correct? Would appreciate any advice on cars/towing etc..
  • Ideal car for the elderly 2 Jul 2001 (Forum)
What are ideal new cars for the elderly in the 8K -13K price bracket? requirements are; easy to get in/out, 4/5 doors, good visibility, automatic (but enough vwoomf to get up 20% inclines), short, slim (to get in and out of garage), reliable. I've looked at Toyota Yaris, Suzuki Wagon R, Fiat Punto. Anyone have any views?
  • Any - Advice from HJ 30 May 2019 (Forum)
Original Q & A Fatal at traction After a bit of gap I thought I would return to the subject of driving an automatic using only the right foot. Our American daughter-in-law came over for Christmas and asked how my discussion with you was going? I told her that you cited a case of a 92-year-old killing people and she questioned as to whether he should have been driving at all.
  • Looking for a "hot-hatch" type car (second ever) 23 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I'm now looking to upgrade to something better to be my daily driver, and I'd like some well-informed opinions on which used cars would fit my requirements. I'm looking for a car that is:   -Automatic or semi-automatic -Fast :- 0-60mph in under 8.5 seconds -Economical :- urban fuel consumption under 8.5l/100km (aka over 33mpg UK) -Cheap to tax :- CO2 well under 150g/km, and car less than 5 years old.
  • Skoda Roomster (2006 - ) - Any advice? 13 Jan 2008 (Forum)
What she really likes about the Civic is the brilliant interior space front and rear, and the airiness of the cabin - these are missing from the new Civic. She is also a convert to automatic transmission and climate control. We've just had a look at a Roomster and she's impressed - lots of space for all the stuff she carts around from time to time. Automatic in Roomsters means a 1.6 16V 105bhp Tiptronic .
  • Rejecting a car tomorrow, help needed. 10 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Problems include 1) Squealing clutch when blocking changing down. 2) Noisy gearbox, when labour in 1st/2nd gear. 3) Automatic wipers (go bezerk), automatic climate (which can't regulate the temperature) and automatic lights (always on) which don't work properly (I've owned other cars where they operate satisifactorily). 4) Car unlock itself, and not locking up properly. 5) Various vibrations noise and rattles. 6) Petrol engine which sometimes at start up sounds like diesel, and makes loud tapping noises on idle. 7) And a few other less problems......
  • Can an independent car dealer find you a car? 20 Oct 2023 (Forum)
However I’m running into brick walls when it comes finding the right car. I’m learning to drive automatic (I find manual too hard) and I’m looking at all the dealerships websites in my area and all I’m finding is mainly manual cars. What automatic cars some do have are either old like 2005 plates or they’re 100k+ on mileage.

  • Engine braking, and how to prolong disc life. 21 Sep 2019 (Forum)
By grinding off  the lipping with a carborundum wheel and getting rid of rust flakes with a hammer and an old screwdriver on the edges and down the ventilation holes, front discs should last around 100,000 miles of normal driving, even in an automatic with a coaster driver.  Always have done for me.  And I don't think I have ever had to replace rear discs.

  • BMW 1 Series - Reversing on the road 25 Nov 2013 (Forum)
As she did so a pick-up truck zoomed down the road towards her and turned left at the 90 degree bend immediately behind her and as a result struck the side of her car denting the side and ripping off the near side rear light cluster.  The insurance company say it is automatically her fault because she was reversing. Surely it cannot automatically be her fault when the pick up truck effectively clipped the kerb as it went round the corner and couldn't avoid putting an 18 - 24 inch dent in her side ahead of her rear lights.
