Volvo S60 Diesel ( automatic 2011 registered) - Battery Change Question - KenC

I have a question relating to a failing battery, can anyone advise please.

My elderly friend has an S60 ( from new) sadly its not driven enough to keep the battery healthy, now only 15000 miles, on the second battery which appears to be failing.

This car has a small match box sized ignition (keyless) electronic key/plug that has to be inserted into a dashboard socket to enable engine start

This car has a large amout of electrical systems ( seat/sunroof /windows all electric) also high power headlamps that seem to always be on and a full alarm system etc, so there is a lot of demand on the battery.

I can see where the battery is located and the terminals/battery mounts

I have two questions

When the battery fails can the battery be replaced and re connected without any " issues" ?

( meaning car systems or security having to be re set or re programmed)

The second question is

Can a larger capacity ( electrically) be fitted eg 80amph instead of 70 amph be fitted without causing any problems ( eg from regulator/alternator or other electrical systems) ,which would give the battery the chance of surviving longer next time ?

thank you

Fitting a larger capacity battery won't cause any issues other than "will it physically fit?" - BUT - if it's only doing 2,000 miles/year that suggests a usage pattern that's insufficient to recharge any size battery, so going larger won't help.

Consider fitting semi-permanently a smart charger which can be connected every time the car is garaged - 3-4 amps would be enough to keep it topped up - must be a smart charger though to prevent overcharging.

hello RT thank you for the suggestion, I have passed it on to my neighbour

Regarding the car I have clarified the model as a S60 D5 2.4litre (auto diesel) registered Sept 2010

it is keyless with what maybe called a "Module" that looks like a keyfob without a keyblade that enables the car to start.

My main concern is that If I get involved in changing the battery ( which seems quiet straightforward ) will I have any problems resulting in having to reprogram any of the car systems ?

I can't answer that part of your question - best to ask on a Volvo-specific forum.

Replacing the battery on these is no problem at all .Just make sure the key is removed from the receptacle on the dash.No re-programming reqd.It may be nedcessary to reset the time clock.

Thank you, Ken, for getting back to us with the final chapter of the saga. I'm sure we all wish people who post here would do the same in similar circumstances.
