On the dash their their is a guide to which gear you are in all the letters were flashing. Called out the RAC all they could do was tow me home, not to far a distance. Chap took a look and said DSG nobody wants to mess with those gearboxes ?? I asked if he would put his code reader on the Car but his reply as don't think it would do any good. -

BMW 3 Series Compact - BMW Owned from New to Scrap 11 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Its a hot day and my wife is sitting in the shade trying not to be upset. Her birthday present, 18 years ago has just been towed away on its final journey. Ihave kept detailed records and it was OK to 65k miles but after that began to cost a small fortune each year with repair mainly of the electronic variety. The final straw at 99k miles was a failed ECU which added to other niggling faults made repair uneconomical. -
Ford Galaxy - PCM problems 5 May 2019 (Forum)
My 2014 Ford Galaxy randomly cut out one day whilst driving. Eventually you could turn it back on, but after a few hours the same happened. We got it towed to a Ford dealer and they diagnosed a faulty PCM. Despite being out of warranty Ford agreed to cover 90% of the cost of a replacement. All good so far.... That was over 4 months ago and the Galaxy is still at the dealer. -
Ford Focus 1.6 LX - Ford Focus Mk2 (2006) clutch pedal spring snapped 17 Sep 2018 (Forum)
3) Is it safe to drive home in it (I think not but wanted to check with you)? 4) Would a roadside rescue service warrant this as a need to tow me home, and are they known to fix the issue I have or will it need to be a mechanic that fixes it? Thanks. -
Hyundai Santa Fe - change of car - dire warnings against diesel? 6 Aug 2017 (Forum)
However there are many adverts for diesels on Autotrader for diesel cars The question is, would I be mad for buying a reasonably powerful diesel for towing a medium size caravan? Is the diesel apocalypse just round the corner? Do diesel owners face gigantic bills or legislation to push them off the road? PS - for those with long memories I'm still a regular in private eye -
KIA Sorento KX2 - New Kia or not? 17 Oct 2016 (Forum)
Finally, we have consisered both the Kx2 Automatic and the KX3 Automatic, but the latter is a bit pricey. Has anyone any advice/experience of these models especially as we tow a 1500kg caravan. Many thanks in anticipation. Alan....... -

Peugeot 308 - How do I stand? 5 Nov 2014 (Forum)
Good Mornig all I bought a NON Runner 308, I Checked the Usual & replaced the Usual after a full service, when the car was bought the previous owner has had the same problem, he was told it was the Pump Solinoid, I replaced with new, new Peugeot Filter etc, Filled up the filter before replacing, battery full of charge, car started & ran for about 20 mins the pettered out,the car will now, not start I was told there was no pressure to the Injector line, I towed the car to a local Diesel Doctor, after a week due to people off for hols I ran him yesterday to be told that there was a Fault within the wiring loom that has caused a NON Sigal getting to the ECU to reduce the fuel lines pressure????????? -
Mazda 5 Petrol - Engine Blown / Irreparable 8 May 2014 (Forum)
Got towed by AA (guy said it sounded like the Head Gasket gone). Garage says its "Cooked" and by the sound of it, the likely damage to the engine would make it unviable to repair. Says I would need new or second hand/recondition engine. but says costs of this plus the labor could be greater than the car is worth. -
n/a - Complete Claim Solutions 28 Apr 2014 (Forum)
I had a trivial "accident" a couple of years ago where the car in front gently rolled back into mine at traffic lights and its tow bar put a golf ball sized dent in my front bumper. We swapped insurance details, the other driver freely admitted liability, the dent was quickly repaired and I had a courtesy car for a day. -
04(53) civic ctdi - high pressure fuel pump bust scrap or repair 27 Jan 2014 (Forum)
I am gutted my beloved civic just stopped while driving. Towed to garage. Would not start. Finally diagnosed as high pressure fuel pump failure. Car just under ten years with 136000 miles. To remove, send off for repair and refit will cost £1200. I am guessing trade in value is about £1200. -
Mazda 6 2.2 diesel (183BHP) (2009) - Replacement engine 13 Dec 2012 (Forum)
This fixed the problem for a few months however on the 26 November the engine had a major breakdown and stalled on the motorway slip road. It was towed to Mazda and it has taken them 2 weeks to discover that there is s hole in the head block of the engine where the original head gasket failed. The car is just out of warranty (ran out in June) and Mazda are telling me that I need to pay £2300 to replace the engine, they are contributing 55% to the price. -
60 plate Astra- two engines in two years 4 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Been talking to my niece, whose friend's Astra's engine blew up last night due to lack of oil and they had to be towed 130 miles home. When I thought this was an old car, I was shocked to hear this was a 60 plate, which had recently had a full service, and apparently the engine blew up a year again due to lack of oil. -
Fiat Punto 1.2 2001 - Fiat Punto Just bought and engine is blown 1 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Car appeared in good order with 56 K miles on it. However the car has blown up about 15 miles into its first journey, Had it towed off the motorway and to a garage, who diagnosed overheating - Head Gasket failure. Car now probably beyond economic repair. The seller had the complete logbook showing the previous owners details. -
Land Rover Range Rover - Honest advice on buying a used Range Rover 6 Jun 2012 (Forum)
I understand the Range Rover is going to have some pretty hefty expenses, but it is such a stunning multi purpose vehicle, and would easily tow my boat. What are your thoughts on my choices, has anyone had first hand experience of owning either of these cars? BTW, I am rather handy with a spanner, so most of the maintainance would be performed by myself. -
Citroen Dispatch 2001 1.9d non turbo - Engine won't start after major oil filter leak 16 Apr 2012 (Forum)
There was a lot of oil on the engine near the filter and all over the underside of the sump, side of alternator and surrounding area. I checked the dipstick and it looked almost empty. After being towed home I changed the oil and filter, nothing seems to be leaking but the van still won't start up. The glow plug light comes on and goes off as it should but the red stop and orange oil lights are still on, the engine turns as normal but doesn't fire up. -
Ford Focus 2006 1.6 Zetec - Ford Focus 2006 Disaster 5 Apr 2012 (Forum)
RAC came and tried new battery, tried boost pack and banged it with lots of sticks (honest!) and had no luck. Ended up having it towed to a local garage. The immobiliser light is still flashing quickly which suggests the key is not recognised. Key was left in ignition when jump starting, wondering if this could have wiped it? -
KIA Ceed Sport 2L Diesel - Rapid Tyre Wear 20 Mar 2011 (Forum)
I’m wondering which tyres you would advise for improved wear and improved fuel consumption. I bought the 2 litre as I tow a caravan. I’m wondering if it would be an advantage to replace the alloys with 15” steel wheels and tyres. These would be 195/65 R15. The idea is that I'd not not notice the potholes as much as I do with the 17" alloys, but am concerned that it may affect the handling.
