DVLA clamping in Scotland 16 Oct 2007 (Forum)
As it turns out he's about to scrap the car anyway - know anyone who wants a Hyundai Sonata? It runs but test-drives would be limited to six inches forwards and backwards within the bay! ;-) -
Volkswagen Golf V estate (2007 - ) - - first impressions 29 Sep 2007 (Forum)
VAG diesels take up to 10,000 miles to loosen up fully, so there's an even better time coming. I'll follow HJ's recommendations for running in - as always, many thanks HJ. There's an element of the sudden rush of shove, but this is a 140 rather than a 170 and it's easy to keep it under control. Gearchange is a delight - I went for a manual partly to save money partly as I can control the revs and minimise turbo lag. -
Musings on motoring in France 15 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Fantastic sight. Also fantastic was the sight of a Gendamerie Subaru parked up at the toll booths, lurking. Run up to Orleans also fun and camera laden, together with unmarked camera cars. These are plain estate cars, parked on the hard shoulder, usually immediately after a bridge, with a camera in the back, and flashlight rather cleverly built into the tailgate. -
03 Laguna repair - opinions needed 13 Jun 2007 (Forum)
She was out doing some shopping last Friday week when the car refused to start back up. She reckons it was running extremely 'growly' prior to parking it. (Direct quote!) Garage towed it back, diagnosed a faulty crank angle sensor and replaced it the same day under warranty (6 months, 6000 miles), we've had the car for 4 months. -
Corsa to sell - effort to put in 27 Apr 2007 (Forum)
It has around 17k miles on it and has been used to get him initially to sixth form after we moved and to work in summer holidays from University and very occasional use in between. Most of the runs have been 10-15 miles. It still has the original tyres (two only half worn - were switched front/back about 18 months ago) and the spare is unused. Everything works as it should. It has been garaged since we got it (early 2004) and Vauxhall services up to end of warranty. -
Ford Focus 1.6 Engine Troubles 5 Apr 2007 (Forum)
To cut a long story short, the new tensioner failed and they ended up replacing all the exhaust valves along with a few other bits and bobs. So far so good, car was running fine when I got it back. Since Christmas, it's used 4.5 litres of oil - it would seem the piston rings are shot. Oil consumption didn't seem to be a problem beforehand, but there's no sign of damage to the pistons themselves. -
Busjams, humps, holes, headlight & home! 10 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Home: As per most Friday's there was a reasonable amount of traffic on the roads tonight though I had a really enjoyable run back to the west country, music on, down the M3/A303 and across the ranges using the torque to waft past slower traffic without having to change down and zipping along undulating, twisting roads at a fair lick, the car seemingly enjoying it as much as I, responding precisely to every input, doing exactly what is is told and nothing more, and getting me out of trouble by providing an indecent amount of grip when I barreled into a corner a bit to quickly, really wouldnt have minded another 60 miles or so! -
Ambulance wrote off my car - what next? 30 Jan 2007 (Forum)
t agree with that statement and told me the following taken from a legal website. ?As a general rule, the driver of a vehicle which runs into the back of another vehicle will be held liable for the accident.? ?Emergency vehicles have no special exemption from liability for accidents that they are involved in or cause. The same rules apply as with any other accident.? -
Prius v. diesel Verso 12 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Definitely worth putting on your shortlist: the Prius if you drive mainly in traffic, the Verso if like me you do a lot of long runs. Hope that was helpful ! -
Scrapyards 13 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Whereas at dealer prices some may well struggle, I know I would when I was 18 and driving my VW Golf Mk2, instead of a Fiesta or Nova which may well have been cheaper to run on dealer prices than the VW, but then I was prepared to work on the car myself and change exhausts, clutch, discs, pads, cambelt etc. There are those that think they are an eyesore, but then are they perhaps the ones who can afford to drop their car into the dealership at £70 per hour and comment on the lovely coffee they had which was supposedly free but come out of the labour rates. -
Toyota Aygo 31 Oct 2006 (Forum)
It will be the second car and will be used for her commute and picking our daughter up from nursery. Basic requirements are cheap to run, has 5 doors but is small enough to fit on our rear patio which is at 90 degress to the drive. Toyota are offering 48 hour test drives (the paperwork actually says 72) so we had one. My wife has had two smarts and her comment was 'this is what the smart forfour shoud have been'. -
Which car is a better bet? 6 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Please don't anybody suggest a Mondeo, I know how good they are and if it were solely down to me it would be on my list, unfortunately my only capital here is my current Focus, and I still owe my parents for that, I've tried running Mondeo past them and they think that's ridiculous at my age (I really can't talk them round) and that the *only* type of large cars I should be looking at are more leggy examples of luxury German Marques. -
My new way to save some diesel 28 Jun 2006 (Forum)
The tyres and tubes were replaced last year for the first time and everything works as it should. It will feel great to be back on the saddle and out in the fresh air. After a few practice runs, I felt no pain or sore bits, so I am looking forward to doing my bit to save the planet. If you have any tips that might make my ride better or safer, please contribute. So please give all cyclists a bit of extra room as you pass, you never know it might be me. -- Roger I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say. -
Problems with Peugeot406 Eng Mgmt System 21 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Ive had a long running problem with my 2litre 110 HDi Pug 406 Engine Management System. The warning light (K light I beleive its known as) has been pretty well stuck on for over a year and despite several attempts to fix it by two Pug garages, Im now at a point where (I'm told) either the wiring loom or the ECU itself needs replacing - both together are in the order of 1700 pounds. -
Nissan Almera: manual or automatic? 4 Feb 2006 (Forum)
If a car does turn out to be ex-rental, is that a reason to avoid? I note HJ's comment that there is something to be said about daily rental as a running-in method, but I'm not sure if that was slightly tongue-in-cheek. Any advice? -
306 HDI 90 T reg - ECU/Imobilisor?? 30 Jan 2006 (Forum)
4. 3rd garage then tested ECU AGAIN and found simple fault - coroded wiring between ECU/Ignition to the fuel pump. Car finally running again after 2 months. However as I could only seem to speak to the receptionist I never found out if imobilisor was a problem and if the car really needed to be sent to specialist. If you have persevered with this tale until now, I would apreciate any thoughts on the above problems. -
Cars you have adored despite problems 6 Dec 2005 (Forum)
It was these phenomenal differences from a standard car that made it a joy to own. Sadly it was not built to last. In the 9 months I had it it went to running on 3 cylinders (did that for a month and kept driving as too skint to repair). I discovered when toppng up the tyres that both the rear discs had worn down sooo much they had become disconnected from the hub and I had no rear brakes at all (I can't say I noticed and it still stopped incredibly well). -
NCD 28 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I'm 32, have been driving for almost 13 years, have had my own insurance for 12, and have been involved in two accidents in the past where people have run into the back of my car at red lights. I successfully claimed against the other people in those instances. I have protected no claims bonus. How will my no claims bonus be affected? Am not sure how many years I have, but if I've not made any claims in the 11 years prior to this year it must be quite a bit. -
Why overtake? 20 Oct 2005 (Forum)
So WHY ON EARTH did I find that in those 4 miles, 5 cars overtook me into this miniscule space only to immediately cut back across me and brake hard to avoid running into the car in front of us? Within seconds the traffic had slowed (and was clearly visible as having slowed ahead) and I was overtaking these people again. In each case I had to take avoiding action, including hopping on to the kerb in one instance to avoid becoming another RTA statistic. -
Computer related questions. Volume 48 9 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Worried that something wasn't right I ran Ad aware and Norton. Ad Aware was fine but norton claimed it had finished after only running for a few minutes. It came up with an error message: "Norton AntiVirus was unable to scan your computer for infections because virus definitions could not be loaded . . ." (3019,5) which we checked on the Norton website and followed the instructions...finally removing the program and re installing it.
