  • 'Police Aware' 11 Jan 2005 (Forum)
As the days and weeks passed it became fairly obvious that it had been abandoned. (A Peugeot 205, seemingly in reasonable nick, but tax disc due to run out 31/12/04.) Not wanting to interfere in case someone had parked it legitimately I did nothing until one morning we noticed a large dent in the back wing that hadn't been there the night before!
  • Front end shunt: cheap repairs? 26 Nov 2004 (Forum)
As only one headlight would work, the police would not let me drive off. So I got Green Flag out, who effected running repairs: * Fitted new bulb in driver side headlight, so I have 2 lights working (no reflectors, though, so its pretty dim.) * Fastened down bonnet with a piece of rope/cable. Still got a major buckle in it!
  • Compensation from VW 18 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Fortunately the French dealers are better trained that their UK equivalents and they quickly found a faulty engine sensor and some wires that had been damaged during assembly. It runs much better now. My question is: Can I claim from VW for all the aggro I have had with this car. I have made numerous trips to the dealer over the past two years, which has meant taking time out of work.
  • Rover 416 problems (seazure and clutch) 30 Jul 2004 (Forum)
The head gasket had previously gone on the water way just above the alternator. This wasn't a problem for moving it around as I just put some water in and it would run fine for 15 mins even. Now after 5 weeks I need to start it to move it and its not starting. Basically after some playing about with it we decided to pull it down the road to bump start it, the trouble is it tried to start, but theres also a loud screeching noise.
  • Breakdown Mechanic killed my car 21 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I\'m sure the small print says I\'m liable for any damage these guys do, but I\'d like a second opinion from those who may have been here before! I drove my \'96 Audi A4 Tdi to fill up with diesel yesterday afternoon after running on the empty light for a little to long. As pulled up to the pump, I ran out completly! Thinking that this was pretty good timing, I filled up, paid, but couldnt start the car again. Obviously the pump needed priming again so I didnt keep cranking the engine as I know what can happen.
  • Skoda Fabia Problems and Dealer Attitude 8 Apr 2004 (Forum)
and has anyone experienced \'bad attitude\' from skoda dealers? i want to get to the bottom of these problems before the warranty runs out!! regards, jam_cam.
  • New Fiesta 2003 startup failure! 23 Mar 2004 (Forum)
The most important thing is I spoke with the first owner to know why she sold the car only after using 2 months! She said the car does not start at first run after she stops for supermarket. Which also happened to me. I have read Mondeo and Focus boards and tried to get something out for me but, I don\'t think my problem is same. May be using 2 micron filter might be the solution.
  • Those WOW! moments remembered 20 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Now i'm a proper supercar admirer so most of my moments are supercar related: Seeing a red Lamborghini Countach Anniversary model in the late 80's - 2 weeks after it was introduced, park on Southampton High St, brand new on its own with no other cars round it, and aged 12 running across the road to have a look at it. There was a crowd of about 20 people round it, and this guy comes out of a shop with 2 little girls, gets in it (with the fantastic scissor doors)and the 2 girls on one seat, starting it up and driving ever so slowly away.
  • MX5 or MR2? 30 Sep 2003 (Forum)
We test-drive both cars on Saturday, virtually back-to-back, which will be interesting and we have both driven a couple of MX5’s before and liked them, though the 1.6 is a bit gutless. The car needs to be convertible, fun, and reasonably inexpensive to run and will be used by one of us for our daily commute as well as for enjoyment at weekends and occasional longer journeys. I imagine that when the weather is fine my good wife will drive it her 20 miles cross-country b-road route to work, whereas in snow, fog and torrential downpours I will drive it my 35-mile mostly motorway journey.
  • Fickle minded Sellers 22 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Accordingly withdrew the money and went over to his place with a friend.Phoned him to say that we would be arriving. He had wanted a bankers cheque initially.Took the bankers cheque. Then he phones saying that he wants cash instead.Had to run around around borrowing money since Saturday afternoon and cash machines dont permit withdrawal > £400. Anyway when i reach there and ring him to say that I have arrived, he seems to have suddenly changed his mind.
  • Renault Megane 31 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Having just got back from two weeks on the Algarve and a week Bull running in Spain I thought I'd just let you know the trouble I've had with hire cars. Normally I would have driven down but the nippers too young so we flew. Got a Renault Megane at Faro which was fine untill you went over 120kph loaded up and it would start to twitch.
  • Yaris D4D vs Golf TDI 130 12 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I can also buy it \"below book price\" in 3 years. I had a quote for a Yaris D4D 5 door T-Spirit. This would be £700 cheaper per year to run than my Golf, over 3 years, factoring in depreciation, fuel, tax etc. I don\'t really need a car larger than the Yaris. I would need to sell the Golf privately - it\'s done 20,000 miles and has a few extras, so I\'d hope to get £11 500 for it.
  • Toyota build quality - am I unlucky? 25 Jun 2003 (Forum)
And now it's in for 3 days to have the gearbox rebuilt to cure a whine and to have the timing belt cover gasket re-sealed as it had started leaking oil. Granted most of these are things that didn't affect the actual running of the car, but even still I'd expected more from Toyota. I'm wondering now if I've just been unlucky and got a bad one, although as it was 2.5 years old when I bought it, surely most of the bugs should have been ironed out?
  • One for the Traffic Police 23 Apr 2003 (Forum)
What is the reason for it here, is it some sort of legal thing that it all has to be investigated. A perfect example was a very sad accident on M8 a few weeks back, a 14 year old boy was running across the Motorway and was hit by several cars and killed at the scene. Although very sad, the reason seemed straight forward - but the motorway was still closed for 8 hours - why? 3. Whilst driving on M25 I was amazed at the amount of skid marks on the outside lane and the fact that the inside lane was hardly used.
  • Mondeo auto starting problems 14 Apr 2003 (Forum)
It generally happens when the car is cold, but not invariably. The car is mostly used for two, 10 or 15 minute runs in the morning and evening. The prime suspect is the starter motor?s solenoid or contacts. The battery (at least 2 years old) seems to be well charged; it operates the electric windows for example, with no sign of the sluggishness you might expect of a defective battery.
  • Ford diesel experts - advice needed 25 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I'd like to stick with Ford because I think they've cracked it now as far as the best compromise between a drivers car and cost of running is concerned. My own experience of VW and the like is that they've been no more reliable than the fiesta, not as much fun to drive and the bits cost at least twice as much. I'd like a new Mondeo diesel and this is where you Ford Diesel experts come in: How many Diesel variants have their been in the NEW mondeo since it's introduction?
  • Subaru Legacy & LPG Conversion 22 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Has anyone on this forum had a legacy converted, and has it been successful........ what did it cost, has it been reliable, does the vehicle run well on it??? What kind of range is attainable from a spare wheel well tank, and are there other areas under the car that could take extra tanks to extend the range on LPG ? On another note, does anyone have experience of having a Legacy maintained by an indepedndent (i.e. ordinary non main-dealer) garage) ??
  • Poor performance '99 Astra TD... 6 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I held my foot on the throttle as hard as I could for about 4 miles, and the smoke did clear, but not completely. Otherwise it starts first time, pootles round our regular 6 mile daily run OK, drives fine otherwise, and has no history of problems apart from the 1st owner said the engine management light was coming on before he changed cars for a newer company car, and the garage got the light to go away.
  • Are Omega's that bad?? 31 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I've just searched through the Back room archives, and can't believe how much problems there seem to be with Omega's, I've had to copy/paste it into Word to read later, off-line....90 pages!!!! Anyway, my point..... I wan't a 2nd (big) car to run along side my Leon TDi. I have basically decided on an Omega Estate due to it's excelent value, and good style. What i'd like to know is: a, Are there any positive stories, and b, What people think of the following models in terms of perfomance, economy and reliability.
  • Yet again: 25 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I'm sorry to raise another example, and I know this topic has been raised before, but this story was run in our local paper (Hull) today.... >An uninsured driver with no licence was fined just £350, despite being in a crash which killed an East Yorkshire paramedic. And Linda Abey, whose husband Graham died in the smash, has called on the Government to jail motorists who flout the law.
