  • Mercedes Benz SL W107 (1971 - 1989) - 1989 3 litre rear axle area knock. 14 Nov 2007 (Forum)
It either disappears over 55 mph , or the increased noise drowns it out . I had new tyres put on about a year ago and at the time examined the rear brakes and all looked fine , no bits hanging off etc .. This car is an auto and has covered 100 k miles from new . Anyone got ideas ? somebody mentioned the drive shafts but it wasn't based on listening to the noise , just to my description of it ...
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 98 1.4 - sluggish performance and EML. 8 Mar 2006 (Forum)
A while ago, my engine management light came on, and I had a problem when I was slowing down to pull up and park, it would labour, oil light would flash, and then rev itself a bit or cut out. (Oil levels are fine) But just before I dropped it in garage it stopped doing this and hasn't since. Now, like I say, I'm not the most technical of people, but surely this is all wrong and there is something up with the thing - even if some teenager in an overall says computer says no.
  • Moderators go out to play... 6 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Congratulations for surviving last night without your loyal and hard-working moderating staff. We were conducting a quality survey of Braksepars bitter in a fine hostelry in Oxfordshire. Not that the evening was without difficulties; The Pub that No Dosh had arranged for us to meet in had burned down, reopened, closed down and offered for sale all within the last couple of months.

  • VW Passat 1.9 tdi 2002 estate. - “Rattle” noise from automatic Passat gearbox 2 Sep 2010 (Forum)
I have owned my car for a few months and it has been working Okay. I seldom have used the trip tronic side of the automatic gearbox. (But it works fine) Generally I just use normal auto driving and all gears have been and still work fine.   Recently I have noticed a “rattle” noise coming from I believe inside the automatic box or around the box.
  • FIAT Ulysse II (2003 - ) - 2.2HDi FAP problems (never get one everybody) 18 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I posted on this site about 3 months ago when my cars engine blew its brains out about 200 metres away from the dealer who said it would be fine to drive. Anyway, having spent a fortune on new Engine, Turbo, 4 injectors, intercooler, clutch and all associated deisel pipes as well as labour from the main dealer am back in trouble looking for advice.
  • Suzuki Swift - Bought used car, having issues and need advice! 26 Jul 2018 (Forum)
Dangerous defects - Brake pads less than 1.5mm, Handbrake eff' less than 50% Major Defects - Both front suspension arm pins/bushes worn, parking break inoperative on nearside and offside rear. Work was done by the garage who MOT'd initially and then passed it once to the standard. I'm a new driver, first car so my experience is limited but it seemed to drive just fine.
  • Car park bump - any advice re Ins? 28 May 2003 (Forum)
Insured for 750 pounds, comprehensive, 0 no claims bonus (new driver), no protected discount. Bump: My car was hit while unattended in a car park. A witness saw the incident, and it appears the person drove into it at 45 degrees from the rear. It must have been at quite a speed as my car was pushed forward at least half a metre - and I found it against the front kerb (nestled in a small hedge...)
  • Jaguar x type 2.0 ltr D. - Engine cuts out when driving / turning right 16 Dec 2012 (Forum)
I have a Jaguar 2.0 ltr diesel, 06 with 93k 0n the clock. I purchased the car at the end of  july this year. The car was driving fine mostly local journeys. Then i was driving the dorset at the end of August for our holiday. We had driven about 50 miles along the motorway when the car lost power but was still running. I came off at the next junction and stop the car in a car park.

  • Focus 2016 1.5tdci Estate 120 - What is happening here? 3 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Both times I started the engine soon after discovering the issue and it has started fine each time, and then run and cooled down as expected. I've had a quick look to see if there is any sort of advance warming system on this engine, but nothing obvious is found and I doubt it likely on a lower end Ford.
  • Struggling on which used car to buy next 28 Jul 2016 (Forum)
Things I like about the CXP that are important to me and influence the next car I buy are: - The low windows in the back means my children get a good view out and motion sickness has all but disappeared - very important as they used to hurl everywhere. - I live in a town, Lewes, where parking is hard and the short length of the Picasso - 4.2M - is helpful - The engine size - the car is 95% used for tootling around town, so I don't need a 2 litre engine, 1.6-1.9 is fine. - The boot: I do a lot of diy, so being able to drop the rear seats to get a decent boot space in which to put timber etc is useful
  • VW Passat TDI 2001 - Starting Problem 25 Nov 2015 (Forum)
Hi All, As some of you may recall I had a big problem with the car six weeks ago,the HG blew and the garage replaced it without finding the cause. One day later after collecting it from the garage it blew again ,loss of coolant and oil in reservoir ,so back to the garage it went. Two weeks later and second new HG and new oil cooler the car was back on the road and working fine. Last Sunday having had the car back from the garage for just over a week I drove to Birmingham from Northants on the motorway with no probs at all, parked the car for 8 hours and when I then tried to start it it would only turn over and was not firing.I called the ** and after a 3 and half hour wait the mech arrive and squirted Easy Start in the air intake , it started up!!
  • Ford Focus - Ford Focus intermittent electrical failure 14 Feb 2015 (Forum)
Several journeys later, now dark, lights on and heater blowing, my wife stopped in a car park and as she went to switch off there was a 'click' and all power disappeared - 100% no electricty, not even the red flashing light on the dash. Nothing happening on turning the ignition key. I arrived 10 minutes later and found car in that state - nothing would work, not even slight noices or dim lights, nothing.
  • vauxhall vectra 2005 2.2 petrol - fuel problem (i think) 13 Jan 2014 (Forum)
hi im new to the site, i have a vectra 2005 2.2 pertol (engine type z22yh) My problem is i drove the car yesterday and it was fine no problems at all, parked up over night went to go to work the next morning and it wouldnt start straight away like normal, when you go to start it takes a while turning it over then it will fill like its starting and you stop the starter motor and then it takes about 10-15 seconds to get up to idle and then will idle all day long but as soon as you put you foot on the gas (like you would normally to rev) it will just cut out sounds abit like not enough fuel or something, but if you rev it very slowly you can rev it right up to max and hold it at 5000rpm with no problem. but starting is the same evertime but if you jump start it it will start first time. once the car is started and on idle you can drive it by using as little throttle as possible like driving just on idle power, if you use the throttle as you would in a normal car it will just cut out.

  • Motoring glass - scrape rub scratch 14 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Glass.. windscreens, side and rear windows - more expensive year by year. Exposed there, to the elements - blasted by high speed grit in the outer lane, bombarded with fine sand from the Sahara and scraped... grit resting on parked wiper rubbers - just waiting. Not Cinderallas glass slipper then - carressed by Prince Charming... (but before or after scraping off the pumpkins residue?
  • Mk3 Golf GTi fuel/stalling problems 28 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Got no further than 1/2mile and again it died, and wouldn't re-start so i called a friend and got a tow home. Soon as i'd parked the car on the drive i managed to start the car no problems. Bizarre. Has anyone else had this problem or something similar or can shed any light on the matter i would be greatful. I'm sure both faults are related but how.
  • Yet another "senior moment" 20 Feb 2005 (Forum)
There is still the matter of the undisposed-of '69 Mustang, of course, something of a sore point. But it'll do fine for trips to the mall, as long as I disguise myself heavily. OK, I'm done now, nurse. Can I have my cocoa please? +

And by now, with the opinions of a hundred journos in my head I simply don't know what to get. Please help, before the 440 finally bites it and... oh. Maybe we don't even need a car.
