  • Slack timing belts. 10 May 2002 (Forum)
Customer asked for the timing belt to be changed at 36K (genuine mileage and original belt) because the car was 6 years old. While getting the bits for the job someone was saying to me it was a complete waste of money and only mileage could affect a belt. Well forget the technical for/against but the slack on the old belt was amazing.
  • Would there be something with 24mpg on a 1.6 diese 1 Oct 2022 (Forum)
I happen to see a 5 year old Honda CRV deisel for sale. The display showed it as 24mpg. Would there be something wrong with this car with such bad mpg?

  • Skoda Octavia Estate - Cheap, reliable car 31 Aug 2015 (Forum)
I've been poring over this site and can't make up my mind whether I should get an old banger like a 05 Octavia 1.9 diesel (<£3k) or whether I should get a 3-4 year old Hyundai i30 still under warranty (about £7k). My main criterion is reliability. Followed by: - cost - space - economy - not too sluggish I'll probably only keep the car for 2-3 years.
  • What % of your income would you spend on a car? 29 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Clearing away some very old papers, I found the receipt for the first car I ever bought. What it was, how much it cost and when I bought it don't really matter. What does matter is that it cost just over 10% of my then annual income.

  • What's so special about Ipod compatibility in cars 7 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Well, call me old fashioned, but I fail to see why so many magazines list ipod compatibility along with ABS/airbags/AC etc. How does non-ipod compatible car becomes less attractive than a compatible one?
  • Anyone else notice ? 23 May 2003 (Forum)
Really sad I know but has anyone else noticed that the car featured on the Peugeot advert set in India showing an old car being 'bashed' into a shape resembling a new Peugeot ?0? also changed from being an RHD to LHD in the process ? Anyone else spotted any major continuity problems with car adverts ?
  • Mitsubishi Colt - Clutch Judder 8 Apr 2013 (Forum)
My Colt CZ1 1.1 3dr is perfect except for a few vibrations in the cabin and one problem I've had for a long time, the clutch. Ever since the first service at 1 year old (6k miles) I've had clutch judder, some times on a mild day it seems fine and crisp but most of the time even after warming up its bad, especially in damp conditions. The cars now done 48k and is 4 years old and I've still got the problem.
  • Ageing airbags. How safe are they? 3 Apr 2011 (Forum)
I have always been an advocate of the "bangernomics" school of thought, having previously owned a string of old crates that have (more or less) got me from A to B) My latest car, a 1995 306 1.9 xrdt has proven itself to be a little gem. It has never missed a beat in the three years I have had it, and I would like to keep it running as long as possible.
  • Volkswagen Sharan (1995 - 2009) - What to replace it with? 10 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I'm looking for a car that's about 3 years old. Does anyone have thoughts on what the newer Sharan's are like, or suggestions on other MPV's to consider would be very welcome. We need to buy asap. Getting to a dealer out of London is ok.
  • Skoda Fabia 2 (2007 - ) - Hard ride 19 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Loved my 24000miles in old model 1.9 Fabia Ambiente- hate the hard ride of the new one. Anyone else think the ride is uncomfortable? Factory tell me 15" wheels and 50 section tyres (old one had 14" and 60 section- much more compliant), due to bigger front discs -- stiffer suspension because car is slightly higher.

  • LHD 968 Porsche from Japan 5 Aug 2005 (Forum)
It is a '92 plate 3000cc 4 cylinder. Current Klms 80K, last recorded service 56K Klms. I have owned the old 944 turbo 8 or so years ago and an 86 924S. I have always fancied a 968 but prices are silly for what are now 10 to 15 year old cars. This one seems a reasonable deal. I will budget for a full service/fluid change and cambelt say £1000, anything else I should think about .
