  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.8 symptom of cooling system problem? 31 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Also I have noticed whitish smoke from the exhaust although I am still not sure whether this is normal and just caused by the hot exhaust gases (water) condensing on the cooler outside air. The coolant level in the reservoir does tend to drop slightly over say 2-3 months. Any advice is welcome.

  • Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 2000 2.0Dti - Air Con Problem 28 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I think there was a leak as when I can to use it again the following day, there was no cold air and I believe the coolant escaped. The compressor doesn't 'kick in' when you tirn it on and I have been told that this is a safety feature to stop it from working when there isn't any refrigerant. Does anybody know how much it costs to refill it again and is there anything I can do to check for where it is leaking from?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 1999 1.8 petrol (UK) water pump 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I have read on some Ford Focus owner's reviews that the water (coolant) pump has failed at low mileages e.g. less than 40 000 miles. I am worried because I own a Ford Focus 1.8 petrol which is a 1999 model and has 74k on the clock. I found this link which gives some information on how long OEM pumps last : http://www.aa1car.com/library/water_pump...
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1998 1.9d radiator and cam belt 3 Jun 2008 (Forum)
my coolant level has been running low very quickly recently and over the past couple of days it has gone from full to empty within minutes. is there anything else other than the radiator that is causing this. im planning on getting the radiator changed because of this problem. and at the same time was going to get a new cam belt as its been about 4 years and 70000 miles since this was changed. does the cam belt need changing this regularly or could i leave it for longer. could anyone estimate the cost of this kind of job. cheers
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 03 1.6 can anyone help with these tools 30 May 2008 (Forum)
A few years back I had a really good set of tapered bungs that I used to use when working on cars, I cant seem to find them. They were really hady and you could push them over or in a pipe to stop ever coolant or whatever from leeking, while you carried out a repair. I can see where do get anything like this, you can see how handy they would be, can anyone point me to a link or anything please. Thank you
  • Ford KA, KA2, KA3 (1996 - 2008) - 04 1.3 Ka servicing 24 May 2008 (Forum)
I have patiently been awaiting the issue of a Haynes manual for the Duratec engined Ka to no avail. So, could some kind person please tell me the replacement intervals for: Spark Plugs Coolant Brake fluid Power steering fluid Transmission oil? Should/can level be checked? I assume there are no tappets to adjust? Does air conditioning need routine servicing? Any other replacement stuff I've missed?

  • Volvo S60 (2000 - 2009) - 2005 d5 auto, couple of queries 25 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Hi, i've just bought a 2005 D5 SE auto, and i've heard that the autos can have problems such as coolant entering and mixing with the ATM and wear because of the going into neutral when foot on the brake thing? does anyone know if the 05 ones were affected or were the problems ironed out, its the facelift model by the way with geartronic, 5 speed i think.
  • Mitsubishi L200 pickups (2000 - 2006) - Temperature gauge not working 11 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Whilst driving from the airport I noticed that the engine temperature gauge is not working, the needle does not move at all. I am keeping an eye on the coolant level just in case. Is this a common problem and easily rectified or am I looking at possibly a new sender or a new gauge? How do I determine what is at fault? It would be nice to solve this for the son before his return.
  • VW Passat 2.0SE 2001 H-Gasket Failure? 25 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Yesterday I experienced total coolant failure whilst driving home. With no warning (and having checked the oil & water at the weekend) an internal alarm sounded, 'STOP' appeared on the dash and the temperature gauge swung to maximum.
  • Fiesta Zetec water in passenger footwell 15 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Guys - Since the hot weather has arrived, my wifes Fiesta Zetec has started leaving a puddle in the passenger footwell. The puddle doesn't smell of coolant etc so I assume its clean water. Its only really been evident since she has been using the air con lots so im guessing its a blockage in the condensation drain pipe? I doubt it is the usual suspect (pollen filter cover) because it hasn't been raining!
  • Radiator cooling Fan - 1992 Astra Estate 22 May 2006 (Forum)
For 1992 Astra SRi estate at what coolant temperature should the radiator cooling fan start up? I was surprised this AM when an M3 jam caused a rise in the gauge indicator temperature higher than expected. The fan does work. The situation is complicated by the fact that the temp gauge reads low, normal thermostat temp = 88degC shows as 84 (engine temp has been checked with electronic thermometer = 88) So when the gauge shows 90 I worry?
  • Rover 'K' Series Engine Cooling System 23 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I replaced the Cooling System Temperature Sensor on my Freelander the other day in the hope that this would cure a problem with the Cooling Fan not kicking-in causing the engine to overheat. When draining the Coolant from the engine, I noticed that the fluid seemed to be of very high viscosity - almost treacle-like. The engine was cold. Is this normal ???. Note: I got the car back from the garage recently after having a cylinder-head gasket replaced - I'm worried the garage might not have used the right ratio of water/anti-freeze, which might also exasperate the overheating problem ?.
  • Golf Mk2 1600 Driver - Core plug leak. 2 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I have finally (I hope)traced the intermittent water leak (sometimes nothing a week, sometimes a litre) from the coolant. It appears that the smallest of leaks is coming from the Core plug on the Off side of the inlet manifold ( I presume that it has a water heated manifold. The pipe work is at best described as confused.)
  • Another 306 thread! 6 Nov 2003 (Forum)
My first reaction is "get a second opinion." Further questioning reveals no evidence of oil stains on engine block, no loss of coolant, no mayonnaise under oil filler cap. Car only does low mileage (3,500 since April), mostly shortish journeys. What does the team think?
  • Radiator repair fluids 18 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I am posting this on behalf of a colleague, who recently put some radiator repair fluid into his coolant. Somewhat curiously, since adding the fluid, the idle speed on his Isuzu turbo diesel powered Cavalier has increased dramatically - previously the car would settle at around 800rpm when up to temperature, but now the engine won't drop below 1400rpm!
  • Thermostat - How important? 22 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I have replaced the thermostat in my 1989 Rover Metro (1989) several times over the last year, as they keep jamming closed, causing the engine to overheat. I have flushed the cooling system and replaced all the coolant with new, thinking that a previous owner could have used Radweld or similar to cure a leak. What side effects am I likely to have if I just remove the thermostat, and run the car permanently without it.
  • Xantia follow up 27 Feb 2002 (Forum)
The only complication seems to have been the introduction of an airlock in the system following the coolant replacement, which I resolved with a little more help from this post . So fingers crossed, that's it over with. Thanks to everyone who responded, especially DW.
  • Renault Clio Heaters 6 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Whenever the heater is put to "hot" it will only blow luke warm air out of the vents - no matter how hot the engine is. The pipes going into the heater are hot and I have flushed the system out and replaced the coolant, but to no avail. The only thing I can think of is that the flap is not opening properly or that the matrix is broken. According to the Haynes manual to check that the flap is opening properly I will need to take the whole dashboard out!
