Used car - SUV 22 Mar 2024 (Forum)
I was never a fan of petrol as I never owned a petrol-engine car aiming for high mpgs and better reliability. Initially, with a bit of stretch, I was looking for luxury SUVs like XC90, Q7, X5 but then I got second thoughts regarding their reliability. I am open to your suggestions, recommendations, thoughts. Looking forward to your replies, thanks! -
sanef tags - reading through heated screens 16 May 2017 (Forum)
Just been onto the Sanef site for my autoroute tag, so I can use the tag lanes at the peage. The website now lists Volvo XC60 and XC90 as vehicles that may have difficulty using the tag. This is apparently because the metal elements in the heated front screens act as a shield. In other vehicles with this feature the tag is placed directly on the screen at a point in front of the rear view mirror. -

Toyota Estima - Imported Estima vs 1.4 Sharan…or something else?!? 3 Mar 2024 (Forum)
I’m in the market for a spacious (and reliable) used 7 seater with a budget of £12,500 Must haves are: petrol, auto, heated front seats, raised seating position OR comfortable drive (due to my disability), reversing camera, room for 2 teenagers in all of the rear 5 seats (so no Qashqai+2 for ex.) but also not as big as a van styled motor such as the Alphard or Berlingo Would be nice: leather/half leather trim, tray tables to back of front seats, half decent mpg After much deliberation I’ve cut it down to an imported Estima vs 1.4 Sharan - around an 11 plate or newer, with less than 100k on the clock and good history (Verso is too small, XC90 worries me with repair bills, don’t fancy a Zafira, Galaxy, S Max, Grand Picasso, or Alhambra) Have I missed anything worth considering - such as an older X5? - and if not, which would be a better investment to try and get 6 or more years of well serviced motoring from?? -
Rubbish Volvo advert 13 Jan 2007 (Forum)
It's the one with the guy who gets a phone call while he's at the airport, and the first thing he does is launch into a monologue about how wonderful his XC90 is, until the caller asks how much it costs - at which point he gets all evasive and pretends his flight is taking off. After he's hung up, he orders a black coffee in the departure lounge after fibbing to the caller. 1) Who cares about their car to that extent? -
Which SUV to replace diesel estate? 26 Aug 2005 (Forum)
The ML270 carries poor tales of reliability and the BMW is a bit too "soccer wife" for me. I was going to look at the XC90, but I heard a whisper about the Kia Sorento and test drove one at the weekend. I was really impressed by the ride given that this is a 4x4 and the quality of the interior. The boot is cavernous and the 4wd is a bonus for the odd occassion when I can get close to the action (skiing etc). -
Part Exchange. Your guess is?..... 23 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Taking the current family transport into a dealership tomorrow for a part exchange valuation against a new XC90 I'm picking up on Friday. Given the demand for these cars, no discount was expected or offered, although the salesaman did agree to PX the current car. He didn't view it at the time. What would you offer for the following, on the basis that the dealer has no sales incentive whatsoever? -
Choosing an SUV for long drives? 28 Jun 2023 (Forum)
I'm also a bit concerned about DPF theft. I am aware of the CR-V, RAV4, Kodiaq, Sportage, Kuga, CX-5, CX-60, XC40, XC60, XC90. I have test driven several of these and I have no real complaints, aside from poor fuel efficiency on some – particularly new petrol and hybrid CR-Vs. I would prefer not to spend more than £20k. -
Nissan Qashqai+2 - Finally traded my Tino in 1 May 2018 (Forum)
Had Diesel vans for years so kind of know what to expect with maintenance. 12 month warranty and 2 years free servicing plus got £400 for my Tino which is what I paid for it and it’s only worth £100 now. Excited to pick it up on Thursday. I nearly went for an older XC90 (maybe next time) but they would’ve been car supermarket and seemed too good to be true, we were concerned about maintenence costs with a premium make plus we felt better buying off this Nissan dealer that has been around about 50 years. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201804235816674? -
Bums on Seats 3 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Can you please help in focussing my used car hunting ..... at the moment my draft list extends to ..... Volvo XC90 & V70, Mercedes E Class Estate, BMW 5 Series Touring, VW Passat Estate. I'm working to a budget of £18k max and in light of the number of messy children would have leather seating as a prerequisite to help the cleaning-up process. -
Suggestions of a good new car 4 x 4 5 Jul 2015 (Forum)
I have the trade in price of this BMW plus a few thousand to spend, so not too much really. I looked at the Volvo XC90 and xc70 - the latter is too small in the back, and the 90 seems to have other problems I have seen on forums. I had an xtrail several years ago - a good reliable car but found it slow, uncomfortable and not a nice ride. -
Swapping S-Max for Kia Sorento 16 Jan 2014 (Forum)
So its back to the larger 4x4s and the BMW X5, Audi Q7 are way too expensive, I had a Volvo XC90 and thought it awful so have arrived at the Kia Sorento or Hyundai Santa Fe twins. The Kia appears to offer better value for money for the same spec and engine/gearbox combination. They will be a little more economical and faster than the S-Max and appear to have a nice flat floor and three individual seats for the second row. -
Convoluted relationships 11 Feb 2004 (Forum)
We have the likes of Ford owning Volvo Cars, Jaguar, and Aston Martin, and with a stake in Mazda, the Fiesta having some engines with Yamaha cylinder heads, and courtesy of parent Ford, the new V8 engines for the Volvo XC90 and S80 also being Yamaha sourced. We also have a legacy agreement between Volvo and Mitsubishi, which effectively also links Ford to Mitsubishi, an X-Type on a Mondeo floor plan and the new S40 and V50 on the as-yet-to-be-released new Focus floor plan. -
4x4 bubble - will it burst? 7 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Unfortunately I don't earn enough to keep something such as a ML for ever, but, at the moment, can reasonably expect to cover my costs (including insurance etc) if I sell it back in the UK after a year (I am not allowed to sell any sooner) - in effect, getting free motoring less fuel, which is also a lot cheaper here than in the UK! Over the past few years I have done reasonably well with X5s and Volvo XC90s. However I read in the papers concerns in the UK about increasing fuel costs, road charging etc, and wonder whether in a year or 2 second hand prices will start to plummet. Personally I am more than happy to drive something less enormous, but, ironically, most of these will not be worth what I paid for them a year later, even with the discount etc. -
Audi Q7 (2006 - ) - Looking to buy an SUV - is anyone else? 17 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hi Im looking to buy a big obnoxious SUV :) And Im keen to compare notes with anyone else out there (Although its possible no-one else is buying LOL) Its a private purchase and thus must represent good value Hence Im looking at a 6 month old vehicle There are some bargains to be had and others which are just stupidly priced My experience is as follows so far: Audi Q7 - Possibly my top choice My local dealer group are not selling any new, they have just cancelled their demo as there is no demand They have a forecourt of S/H ones most at full sticker price, the most recent ones are even marked over what I can buy a new one at through a broker Even so they will not entertain talk of a discount - Id imagine selling none new and having 12 that I can count on the yard may soon change this Disco3 - another contender Top spec HSE 45k list, 38k from a broker or 28k at a dealer with an 08 plate Value at 3 years a bit scary but possibly more sell-able then than a V8 Q7 Reliability a worry X5 - not really interested But talked to dealer, has waiting list new but group not taking them as PX as they cant shift them and make a profit. He admitted this state of affairs was confusing XC90 - outside contender Havent spoken to a dealer but all recent S/H stock is way more expensive than I can buy new from a broker. Also all stock is band G whilst a new model from the broker has the new band F engine From valvo website GFV at 3 years is 33% of list which is poor, although possibly par for the course Cayenne - not a chance :) Stunning bargains to be had, but I just dont want one So who else is looking? -
Buying a car. Can you help with the 3Ws and H? 16 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I can't afford to buy another Disco 3 and why would I buy say an out of warranty 3 year old Volvo XC90 for 85% of the price of a deeply discounted new one? I read that HJ thinks the next couple of weeks is the best time to buy secondhand before prices go up again in time for expected demand in January. -

My Road Test - Volvo XC70 D5 Summum Auto 19 Jul 2006 (Forum)
The smart 4x4 system works seamlessly, providing rock-steady traction - it's your privilege not to think about it all, for it's just there doing its job. Perfectly. Apart from the Yamaha's V8 petrol in the XC90, Volvo currently uses only 5-cylinder engines - both petrol and diesels. Some say that 5 pots create more vibes, some say just the opposite. The one here - a D5 unit - creates no vibes at all plus it sounds great, just like hmm.... that would be rather hard to explain - something in between a R6 and a turbocharged 4-pot petrol.
