Paris introduces classic car ban 20 Jun 2016 (News)
It previously experimented with halving the number of cars in the city by only allowing those with even-numbered licence plates for one day in March, 2015. From the beginning of July, all car owners driving in to Paris will have to register and obtain the correct window sticker for their vehicle. If their car is too old to be allowed in, or if they drive within the restricted area without a sticker, they are liable to a fine of between €35 and €450 (£27-£349). -
A Grand Monday: Alfa 146 31 May 2016 (News)
Angular Giugiaro lines, matched with punchy Boxer engines from the outgoing 33 made the 146, along with the three-door 145, an entertaining (albeit leftfield) choice of mid-size hatch from 1995 until 2001. It was also quite an entertaining car to drive – the torquey, free-revving nature of the engines encouraging you to press on and discover that, despite its humble origins, Fiat Group’s ‘Tipo Due’ (or Type Two) platform was actually a pretty decent chassis. -
A Grand Monday: Fiat Tempra, £375 16 May 2016 (News)
It has covered less than 70,000 miles, the body and interior both look excellent, and there are no horrors lurking in its MoT history to suggest there’s anything serious that’s going to prevent it from sailing through any future tests. They drive okay, too. As a quirky, family friendly retro runabout, you could do a lot worse, as like all Italian cars, Tempras respond well to vigorous inputs. The chassis has impressive grip, with oodles of controllable understeer, the engine is lively and responsive, at least aurally (we’re talking 78bhp here, so don’t expect miracles) and the cabin has style, even if the driving position is better suited to those who are permanently disfigured. -
Celebrate 30 years of the Sinclair C5 2 Jan 2015 (News)
An electric motor powered the left-hand rear wheel, helping the C5 to reach 15mph – its top speed, as restricted by law. Anyone over the age of 14 could drive one and no driving licence was required. Built by Hoover at the firm’s factory in Merthyr, Wales – prompting incorrect rumours that it was powered by a washing machine motor – each C5 was supplied to its new owners in a cardboard box. -
A Grand Monday: Austin Montego 2.0 Mayfair 27 Oct 2014 (News)
Conventional engineering aided its appeal to fleet buyers, while decent equipment levels and impressive front-drive handling made it popular enough among sales reps. Who remembers the classic Montego TV ad, with Russ Swift as the sales rep driving up on two wheels across the company car park? The later addition of a turbo-diesel Montego boosted fleet sales, while the extreme roominess of the estate version ensured that this was also a popular choice. -

Report: Peking to Paris, day 17 14 Jun 2013 (News)
We spotted a fuming crew member of the Citroen DS having navigation problems driving the lift to the superb dinner tonight… never mind the lift buttons, the Citroen in the car park is showing signs of another hydraulic issue, this time the front is stuck in maximum height mode. -
Report: Peking to Paris, day 11 8 Jun 2013 (News)
The car is highly original, even most of the stickers, and its failure is just an age thing. If only the Citroen was more simple!' Gerry Crown was driving hard today – he spun the big V8 Leyland P76. He happens to own the ex-Evan Green P76 that also drove in the 1974 World Cup Rally, and is here with a replica. The oldest car in the event, the 1913 Model T Ford, had one disaster after another yet still the crew keep turning up for dinner. -
Music Business Mini to Star in Barons Christmas Classic Auction 3 Dec 2012 (News)
The car has had just six keepers from new; three of whom were the same man. The vendor first acquired the car in 1973. He used to drive around in it with Steve Marriott of Small Faces and Humble Pie fame, who described the Mini as ‘a 100mph pair of shades’. In the late 70s the vendor sold the car to Denny Lane (of Moody Blues and Wings), but after just eight months he bought it back to restore it. -

Volkswagen's new chassis explained 2 Feb 2012 (News)
Well it represents a big change in the design and production of cars with transverse-mounted engines - this is the set up that the vast majority of modern front-wheel drive cars have. The fact it's a modular platform means that models that use it can be built together - even if they're difference brands. This means that in theory models as diverse as the Volkswagen Polo, Audi A3 and SEAT Alhambra could be built at the same plant. -
