Which are the most hassle-free engines these days? 29 Oct 2007 (Forum)
What are the truly hassle-free engines out there at the moment - the ones which are nice and simple and idiot-proof, where there is little to go wrong? I would envisage engines with: no turbos, no complex fuel injection systems (such as in CR diesels), no timing belts, which are happy to run on basic grades of fuel, which do not use much oil between services, which don't have any major reliability problems or faults, and which are easy for mechanics to work on. -
306 rough idle and smoke 26 Sep 2005 (Forum)

Oops! Wrong fuel!!! 17 Jun 2001 (Forum)
After eight years of running a diesel, the other night I done the inevitable and started filling up with unleaded. Fortunately I noticed almost straight... -
Zafira tourer - New Zafira tourer - no 1.6 diesel 11 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Have been looking at smallish 7 seaters. Really like the Zafira tourer fro a variety of reasons. All the reviews suggest the 1.6 Diesel engine is the pick, and the claimed fuel economy is about 8mpg better than any of the other engines in the range. The 1.6 just made Jeremy clarksons top ten cars of the last year. They recently released the 2017 version and it looks significantly uglier than the current model and they seem to have pulled the 1.6 engine. -
modern turbo diesels - bad mpg at 60mph 18 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Do modern turbo diesels suffer bad economy if driven below full turbo boost for long motorway speeds ? I recently drove to Birmingham and back and I am sure that I used more fuel driving at 60mph than at 70mph. My reason for thinking is this :- Driving to Birmingham had heavy traffic so could only drive at 60mph, the engine speed was 2,000rpm (just within turbo boost) The return journey was driven 70mph the engine speed was 2,400rpm so this was well within the full boost of the turbo. -
Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 99 1.7 Possible diesel leak 29 May 2009 (Forum)
The car was parked facing up a hill, so it had run slightly. The car has been moved about a bit since then, and each time, there's been a few drops of diesel underneath, but not much. I have seen one older post suggesting that filling the car up fully with fuel can cause this to happen a little and I did fill the tank up to maximum yesterday - is this a likely cause? -
Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 98 1.8 Priming a diesel engine help! 21 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I have a dodgy fuel gauge and I stupidly let me diesel escort run dry without realising. I have put enough in from a can to get it started but it still won't turn over. Someone has said i need to prime it - never done this before and excuse my ignorance but I don't know enough to just fiddle around. -
Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - 03 2l unblock diesel filter 12 Nov 2008 (Forum)
hi , we have a pegeout 307 hdi turbo 110 on the 03 plate, every now and again the unblock diesel filter light comes on , then on the dash the orange light comes on , it stays on for only a little while , we have had the fuel filters changed , the drain plug cleaned, the link to the computer reset lasted about a week but came on again last night only for about a min or 2 , we have read the book and it says it could be because of town driving and to try to build up a constent speed of 35 and above for 5 mins , have you any ideas what could be causing this thanks cabbie_mick..... -
MPG ready reckoner? 19 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Hello, I need to change my car - I want a big diesel with plenty of luggage space and power enough to tow a caravan. Does anyone know of an easy way of working out annual fuel costs based on average mpg? I want to work out how much, say, a Nissan X-Trail would cost per year in diesel compared with a big estate like a Ford Mondeo. -
Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 1998 1.5 diesel intermittent non start. 4 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I have a problem, my 1.5 diesel S reg, starts most times. But sometimes It just turns over but does not fire, like the fuel cut off soleniod is stuck. Been reading various links on this subject. I have found the relay in front of the alternator, not sure if this is where the prob is. or how to un-plug it to check the condition of the connection. -
C15 Diesel not starting 6 Nov 2006 (Forum)
My C15 (02 reg) diesel, which people helped me out with previously, has decided not to start. It turns over OK, it looks like fuel is getting through to the injector pump, I can't get to the injectors themselves to see if it is getting that far. -
Bio diesel in Manchester 5 Jun 2006 (Forum)
The Half Way House petrol station (corner of Middleton Road and Bury Old Road) has just started selling biodiesel at 88.9ppl. It's a small old site and the nearest station is a Shell with regular diesel at 94.9ppl I think, which is surprisingly low for recent times in our area. It's been up to 98.9ppl in the last month. I filled up the Trajet today and noticed that the fuel is a murky brown colour and foams up more. -
Accord Diesel Consumption - Update 11 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Following the correspondence regarding fuel consumption of the Accord diesel I'm happy to report that there has been a huge improvement. The car has now covered just over 11,000 miles and achieved 50 mpg on a journey from Rouen, where I filled up, to Calais, which was all autoroute except for the trudge through Rouen and the outskirts. -
Jaguar x-type 2.0 Diesel noise 17 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I have just taken delivery of a new X-Type 2.0 Diesel Classic - it's fantastic, just one niggle. A noise starts within a few seconds of starting the engine and is audible above the background sound of the engine. It's an irregular clicking sound which can only be heard from inside - a bit like indicator clicks or the noise electric fuel pumps sometimes make, but not as loud and, as I say, irregular. -
Diesel Beamer Judder 25 Feb 2003 (Forum)
My 2001 525 diesel engine judders like it's misfiring or running on 5 cylinders. This happens when you stop it and start it again after sitting for 10/15 mins with the engine hot. It goes after 5 to 10 minutes at idle or if you hold the revs at 1500/2000 for a few minutes. -
More on Diesel Smells 20 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Today's local press announces Philippines Govt has launched a project based on using coco oil blended in with diesel fuel. Since the country has millions of hectares of coconuts it will be interesting to see how this works if it gets off the ground. The exhaust smell might even please Eleanor and some of the greenies. -
Rover 115 STD - Air in the System!!! 19 Jan 2006 (Forum)
My rover diesel has stopped altogther. I had it looked at and the fuel primer was changed and she worked fine for a couple of days but will not start at all. The same guy suggested that their may be air in the system. -

Here goes... 2p on unleaded 3p on diesel VAT up to 19% - which adds yet more your fuel and your purchase / running costs. Road Fund licences up 10%. All "to fund the NHS" which now spends something like 55% of it's revenues on administration. -
