Tax expires whilst on hols! 16 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Hi, My parents are going to Australia on a long holiday and will be away for just over a month. In the middle of the trip my dad's tax runs out. They leave UK on the 31/1 and return sometime at the beginning of March. The tax expires on or around the 15th Feb. Other than giving his card details to one of my brothers (risky ;0D) and getting them to renew it online what are his options? -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2001 1.8 Potential problems with low-mileage Focus 14 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Recently inherited Grandfather's Y-reg Focus 1.8. 11,000 miles FSH and always garaged. Only done 500 miles pa since 2002. My concerns: 1. Doesn't run very smoothly and lots of condensation from exhaust. 2. Original tyres (2000 manufacture), too old? 3. It's on its original cam belt. 4. Brake discs are rusty & fluid was last changed in 2005. Any other potential causes for concern on such a low-mileage car? -
The F1 & motorsport thread - Vol 27 [Read Only] 5 Dec 2008 (Forum)
With the cars being reliable and more evently matched these days I still think it will be difficult for anyone to pass Schuey's record 7 titles. Who remembers when cars used to run out of fuel on the very last part of the race (no refuelling then) and they'd even try pushing the car! Or is that me imagining they actually tried that on the finish straight. -
BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - Unbelievable high mileage cars/BMW 2.8i 25 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Being a lover of my own E46 328i SE I have just been chatting with a local garage mechanic who has a customer who has owned the same model of car from new that has covered a whopping 276,000 miles with no engine work carried out on it just serviced at the required intervals. I guess mine is just run in at 110,000....LOL. Any more site members have any high mileage car stories? -

Huge car maker losses 9 Nov 2008 (Forum)
US carmaker GM has reported a third quarter operating loss of $4.2bn (£2.66bn) after Ford announced it lost $2.98bn during the same period. GM said it would run out of cash in the first half of 2009 if economic and market conditions did not improve. GM said it would cut jobs and costs and has also suspended merger talks with Chrysler to focus on current issues. -
Pleasing fuel consumption 19 Oct 2008 (Forum)
It's a 1.8Tdci, 115bhp, now done 75,000 miles. The old bus is returning just over 50mpg in day to day driving, 13-mile commute, occasional run down to the caravan in leafy N Yorks, pottering about, etc. I'm not the world's fastest driver, but rarely get in anyone's way, either. I reckon 50mpg is pretty good for a car that pulls pretty well if you give it some wellie. -

Trip imminent - best route to Dover ? 20 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Any suggestions for the best current route from South of Leeds to the Eastern docks? I can just as easily run down the A1M and down past Peterborough if required - although I have never done that on a Sunday Morning. Usual route is the M1. Thanks -
Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 2002 - Clutch / Gearbox 10 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Can anybody offer some advice about a Zafira clutch/gearbox fault on my sister's 2 and a half year old car? Basically, with the engine running, you can't select any of the gears. However, if you put it in gear and then start it, you can drive it (but only in that gear). Had to drive it home in 2nd for her after it expired in Edinburgh at the weekend. -
Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - 04 1.9dci Clutch Problem - Slipping at speed only 27 Aug 2008 (Forum)
It only slips when driving at speed, e.g. in 4-6th gear, put my foot down to accelerate and it slips. This only happens when the engine has been running for a few miles and is warm, not when cold. It has done 99,000, it had a new clutch fitted at 62,000. Wonder if it is clutch plate, but surely a clutch should last longer than this? Any suggestions? -
How civilised is Newhaven? 15 Jul 2008 (Forum)
We need to do a quick Blighty run this week from France and we are tempted to use the Dieppe-Newhaven crossing with Transmanche Ferries - seems cheap and convenient. Only problem is - the return ferry leaves Newhaven at 7am on Saturday and we don't know the area. -
Efficient petrol engines - suggestions? 1 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I'll kick off with: Honda Jazz - a hard worked 1339 cc engine but people seem to get mid to high 40s with ease New (08 model) Mini - SWMBO's Cooper does 40 mpg in town and 46 on a long run, about 5 mpg better than the'06 Mini One she had before. -

Vehicle reports : HPI/mycarcheck/autocheck 25 May 2008 (Forum)
Ebay has a few at reasonable prices, but when it comes to checking the car there are various reports available. HPI MyCarCheck AutoCheck are the ones I've come across. Can anyone give me a quick run down on the key differences - which is best? I'm only looking at spending 3-4 K but even so some sort of guarantee would be handy. Also - what about short term insurance? There used to be someone offering it free when you buy a car on ebay - is that still the same? -
Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 02 2.0HDi loss of display and electrics 23 May 2008 (Forum)
My 02 2.0 HDi Rapier 90 has a problem while driving along the whole dash goes blank no aelectrics working, that is no indicators, wipers, radio, electric windows etc no display. The engine keeps running and i can keep driving but when I stop you cannot start, engine cranks but due to no dash display of any kind it will not start. I disconnect battery and reconnect then all display comes back but then a little while later it loses everything again. -
Which diesel car? 20 May 2008 (Forum)
Will be driving about 75 miles daily, 7 days a week. Need to replace my existing petrol car (30 mpg) with something that cheap to buy and run. Image not imporant, but no Micra, no French cars. The car needs to be reliable. Any opinions. Thinking of the following diesels VW Polo 1.4, Skoda Fabia 1.4 , Toyota Yaris 1.4, Mitsubishi Colt 1.5. -
BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 2000 1.9 ltr Automatic fuel consumption 19 May 2008 (Forum)
(Stamped service record book only, no bills) I am concerned re fuel consumption. It does only about 23mpg with no city driving involved. I did a motorway run of 300 miles which averaged about 30 mpg. Could anyone please tell me if this is about right? If not what could be the problem? (I do drive sensibly)
