  • VW Polo 1.2 E 2003 - 1.2 Polo Disapeering oil 26 Dec 2017 (Forum)
Bought this car on wednesday 2nd. 81,000 miles, 1 owner. Had been serviced by dealer prior to sale. 1 month warranty. Seemed to be running lovely and I clocked up about 200 miles or so till friday night when the oil light came on. Luckily I was close (300yrd) from my destination so I didnt drive it for long after this. Checked the oil on Saturday and the was nothing there.
  • 2 Insurance policies into 1 12 Oct 2017 (Forum)
When the time comes and we decide we neeed only one car then (as both NCDs are over 9 years) we will use the policies in alternate years (2 years until a NCD expires) until such time as one of us gives up driving. That way we keep both our respective policies alive and do not run the risk of having the wrong person give up motoring first. Unless someone knows why this would not work.
  • Automatic petrol with a bit of panache and flair 28 Aug 2017 (Forum)
There is just nothing out there on the forecourts.  I am willing to spend £10kish and no-one is running up to me to take my cash.  Been at 5/6 nationwide dealers - Skoda, VW, Ford, Peugeot, Mazda - they all searched their databases and came up with over 700 diesels that fitted the bill and about 10 petrols....a Skoda, a BMW 3 series estate, and I forget the other ones.
  • BMW 3 Series - Which car to go for 11 Aug 2017 (Forum)
I am inclined towards a bmw3 320d series with efficient dynamics returning about 80mpg which I might not achieve anyways but even if i can get to 70 it should be good, my run is about 18k on motorway and 2k on local mileage. The ones i have looked so far is 13 reg done 40 to 50k miles and checking mot history just to get an idea if there is any problem on it already documented.
  • Peugeot 308 or Alfa Giulietta - New car advice please 23 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I've done a bit of research on both cars and like the look of both, but am swaying towards the Peugeot at the moment as it should be the cheaper of the two to run.  My budget is in the region of £8,000 and the Peugeot fits nicely into this for an 'Active' HDI model. However, I do have concerns about possible issues as I've never owned a diesel car before.
  • Any - Posting in Honest John Real MPG 23 May 2017 (Forum)
As a general question, it would be good to know whether duplicate entries to the real mpg database are flagged to an administrator at HJ such that only one is actually added to the figures from which the overall running average is calculated.  In any event whilst the integrity of the Real MPG data relies on our submissions being honest, it is clear that individual results achieved will depend very heavily on such things as driving style (heavy versus light footedness), geographical location (flat or hilly), passenger payload, and the levels of traffic congestion typically experienced by individual owners.
  • Any - Mazda 3 v Civic 1.8 v Auris 1.2T 22 May 2017 (Forum)
Won't consider VAG again, even though nice to drive. Simply don't trust the engineering in the long run. Will keep for 5 years or so.  Important to me are reliability, DIY friendly-ness, driving pleasure in terms of handling/feel etc. Top speed unimportant as never go above 75 to 80 mph but I do like a car that's responsive, with good steering and roadholding.
  • Mazda 2 - Recommendations for £5-7k reliable 5dr hatchback 24 Apr 2017 (Forum)
I mentioned the Golf earlier, but I hear they're quite expensive to repair? I am open to non-Japanese cars if they're just as reliable/cheap to run. So far I have the Mazda 2 and Honda Jazz on my list. The Honda Civic, I'm not too keen on the supposed poor rear view, and it does err on the larger side. The Jazz I honestly don't care if it's seen as an old person car if it's responsive and nippy then I'd be happy, but I hear the ride isn't the most comfortable?
  • Mondeo 2014 2.0 TDCi 140 ZBE - Mondeo TDCi - next 50k miles? 1 Feb 2017 (Forum)
However, I'm pretty sure that the next 50k miles are when the problems can arise and I'm keen to prevent them as best I can. I do a Yorkshire - Kent run every few weeks - about 3.5hrs each way with no holdups: A1 - A14, M11, M25, M20 and this accounts for the majority of the miles. Otherwise it has a few trips around a pretty fast dual carriageway and the usual school / supermarket journeys.
  • Never had this conundrum before....what do I buy? 15 Jan 2017 (Forum)
I currently drive a Volvo S60 on a 61-plate and have to change it within the next few months as it has hit my company's age limit - I'm on the company car opt-out so receive a monthly payment towards buying and running my car. Possibly why I'm having trouble to decide what to get as I have to rather than want to. Having looked on and off over the last few weeks, I'm even more confused about what to change to next.
  • Vauxhall Astra Club - Head gasket? 7 Jan 2017 (Forum)
He took the car back to the garage, and was told that it was unlikely to be the head gasket, as this car has a metal gasket (excuse me if I have described this incorrectly.) He said it was probably condensation, and maybe an air lock? He topped up the water, told us to run it for a few days, and if the level dropped again, to take it back. Well 2 days later it has happened again, more creamy substance, and level dropped.  My question is, is this likely to be the head gasket?
  • The Dreaded Particulate Filter. 23 Dec 2016 (Forum)
I'm looking to change my 2005 Honda Accord 2.2CDTI for an SUV and have around 8K to spend, I've had some helpful advice here with regard to viable alternatives of the non-diesel kind which has been gratefully received. My fear is that if I do buy a diesel (which to be honest I would prefer) I run the risk of the DPF issues that seem to be prevalent among the cars travelling shorter distances. I mostly do short trips of say, 15 miles or so but also the odd longer trip of 75 miles maybe once per month( inc 30 miles of motorway).
  • Other - Big+Tall guy - car recommendations please 1 Nov 2016 (Forum)
I'm looking for something that primarily accommodates me - I won't normally have passengers and if so, they'll have to fit themselves around me. I'm wary of cars that have the massive (WHY?!?) foot-wide central console running from the dashboard all the way through the middle of the car - I understand the need for armrests etc but I feel a LOT of space is lost.. I'm favourable to cars with a dash/column-mounted gear shift/lever.
  • n/a - Petrol/diesel can be hard to find in France. 30 May 2016 (Forum)
Best advice is to fill before you get on the ferry and top up as you go in France wherever you can find fuel on your journey. Diesel is the first fuel to run out at fuel stations, about 70% of cars are diesel over here. UL95 seems to be more readily available The shortages have been worse in the north and north-west but are spreading south.  The unions have also threatened to shut down power stations and power cuts are expected.
  • w123 1985 230e - person reverses into me, admits fault, gets off! 4 May 2016 (Forum)
last week a woman reversed into my parked car (1985 w123 230e) whilst fleeing ex-partners house where their son was smashing it up. She tried to make a run for it but I stopped her car before her son jumped in. She admitted fault and gave her address.  She told her insurance, I told mine. I was told to pay excess (£500) and then await a valuation - 'but due to age of car, it will be probablies written off' I got told.
  • Volkswagen Scirocco Mk II (1983 - 1991) - VW scirocco nostalgia 21 Apr 2016 (Forum)
In 16 subequent years and about 12 cars later I am yet to eclipse that feeling of elation in the first drive of a new car - a close run thing with a 3 series and again with Pug 206 gti but neither was quite the same as that first real car experience. Perhaps one day I'll get my hands on an R8!
  • Citroen C5 Mk III 3.0 HDi Tourer - Uprated bulbs for C5 Mk III 10 Apr 2016 (Forum)
I put this to the people selling the bulbs who replied "We are unable to fully agree with the mechanic's diagnostic as the bulbs run at the same voltage and wattage as standard, therefore should not draw any more power." Who's right? Interestingly, since fitting Halfords Ultra Brilliance 120% about 18 months ago, I've had three failures (in the 3 years previous to this, I had none with standard bulbs) so might there may be something in what the mechanic says?
  • Renault Megane - S172 Failure to Identify 29 Mar 2016 (Forum)
I have no other choice as both my and my girlfriend work insane hours and are very unsociable (6am starts 12am finishes etc) and public transport just will not get us to and from work as it doesn't start early enough or run late enough.  Thanks for any replies.
  • Unknown/Unknown - Help on what to buy for maximum budget of £10,000 6 Mar 2016 (Forum)
Am looking for something which is fast & fun mabe under 8 to 60, large enough for a family of 4, economical and reliable to run and cheap to maintain/repair. Thus far I'm thinking; Mondeo 2.0 Titanium 163ps Focus 1.6 ecoboost Zetec S 182ps Honda Civic Mk6 (undecided Type-S or 2.2 i-CTDi Si-T) Citreon C5  2.0 BlueHDi 16V VTR+ 150ps Tourer Skoda Rapdi Spaceback 1.4 TSi (125ps) Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer  2.0 CDTi (195bhp) SRi 5d   Some of above a random but gives an idea of where my thinking is style wise.
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - (92-97) SPi 1.8 ADZ headache 19 Jan 2016 (Forum)
If you cruise at low load it steadies itself. But if you move the throttle or give it some gas it runs on 2- 3, really rough. It always stars first time, the fault is just the same on LPG or petrol. Any ideas? So far i've changed: Coil Plugs Leads Rotor arm Dizzy cap Distributor ECU Whole Throttle body, with TPS, etc sensors Checked: Cambelt is tight, timing's OK.
