  • Burning Oil 13 Dec 2000 (Forum)
Can anybody help me please? I own a 16 year old Audi 80 1.8 GL which after 130,000 miles is still going strong but has started to 'smoke' from the exhaust on acceleration. The mechanic who serviced my car recently said that this is common on old VW/Audi engines and is due to the rubber valve guide seals going hard.
  • Any - University car 13 Aug 2013 (Forum)
My step daughter is looking for a car for her final year at university from September, budget around £1,500. The usual suspects I assume, Micras, old Civics, etc. With small petrol engines, is mileage more important than age?  And which is the best online search resource - is it Auototrader?
  • Car insurance for the elderly 4 Jun 2013 (Forum)
Last year my mother, who is over eighty years old, paid over £400 for her car insurance. We did alot of searching on the internet yet that was the best figure we could find. This year we found insurance for less than £250 with LV, a very pleasant surprise!

  • Used car warranties - worthwhile? 5 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I am looking at a 3 year old car (Picasso) from a small trader - what are my 'rights' under the sale of goods act if there is a major fault? Should I buy a warranty? If so, which one? Or can I rely on consumer protection law? Thanks for your comments
  • How long to charge a battery? 10 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Assuming a 'modern' car - a few years old, how long (or how many miles) does it take to charge the battery after you've started the car? Lets assume the car is in good condition, and it takes no more than 1 to 2 seconds for the engine to 'catch' after turning the key.
  • Tipp Ex on car body 25 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Anyone got any idea how to remove Tipp Ex from car bodywork? A schoolkid thought it funny to pour it down my friend's rear wing of his metallic Mondeo (M Reg). You'll be glad to know he was caught and handed over to the police (12 year old)
  • first time buyer in UK-pitfalls- help 16 Dec 2002 (Forum)

  • Used car advice - Budget 5K 30 Dec 2016 (Forum)
This is for my personal use for weekend trips and occasional city rides in the evening, I think on an average 10000 miles a year. I had real bad experience with my previous car from a dealer which was my first car so I get worried.  So far I had seen Skoda Octavia, Mondeo, Insignia..They all have done over 70K miles and atleast 5 years old for the budget I am looking at also Audi A3 most of them over 90K miles and 8 years old.
  • Insurance while selling a car 20 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Hi all, Lined up a replacement for our 10 year old Yaris and hopefully pick it up in the next few days (not local to me so arranging logistics). I plan to sell the old Yaris privately so need have the car insured still. I have a car and my wife has a car already so for a period of time (not to long hopefully) we will have 3 cars between us.
  • Replacement car advice 16 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Got to be automatic, with a reasonable size engine and boot, but what about a Focus, or a Jazz? Or maybe we should pay a bit more and get a newer car (the Almera was bought when 6 months old). We have a hire car provided, and its a Toyota Prius. After the initial disorientation I'm getting to quite like it, so maybe that should be an option, though they are quite pricey.
  • FIAT - Buying flawed 70s Gems.... 16 Nov 2008 (Forum)
As many who have been following the Old CAR Magazine thread will know a lot of us have been getting nostalgic about the cars of the late 70s and early 80s that were lauded by this once venerable pubication. I have bought some old copies of CAR and three cars have seriously tempted me into looking Europe wide for a good example: The FIAT 127 and FIAT 128 ( fantastic Lampredi designed OHC engine) Citroen GS (svelte comfortable and terrific revvy air cooled flat four engine) Alfa Sud 1200 TI ( still reckoned by many today as one of the most finely balanced front drivers ever made).
  • used cars - Spare keys and documents/handooks 23 Nov 2018 (Forum)
Went to a main dealer today to look at a low mileage demo, 2161 miles, 11 months old...and 2nd keys and documentation/service records  locked away......

  • When Britain was Great 26 Sep 2009 (Forum)
This is an old ad I know, but what a thoroughly great car! http://www.motorbase.com/classifieds/viewstock.ehtml?id=131084536; I know they blow up every 5 mins & rust like the clappers etc., etc., but I know these cars and they are great - still are IMO.
  • Which best - Diesel or Petrol Auto? 12 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Although I have owned Diesel cars for many years I have only driven Petrol autos. Any preferences out there? My next car may be a Kia seed or Hyundai i30...
  • Citroen ZX/Pug 306 23 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Just out of interest, how are these cars related? I'm told they are pretty much the same car. I am to be given my mum's old 1.9D ZX. 122k on an M plate. I know the engines are the same 1905cc XUD lumps.
  • Motoring Mags 21 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Sorry if this an old subject, but are ALL motoring writers obsessing on exotica these days? With one notable exception (Car Mechanics) most mags seem uninterested in average cars and are therefore, as far as I am concerned, a total waste of space.
  • Pug 205 automatic 8 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Has anyone any experience of the automatic gearbox on these cars? My brother has an automatic only license and has driven old Micras up until now but has been offered a 1988 205. Am I right to be a bit wary of these cars? Thanks
