My usually reliable indie declares himself outwitted by a combustion imbalance on my car: 99T showing 37K miles, with oil/filter changes every 6K, coolant changes, etc. For the last 1000 miles a grey cloud had been visible in the r/v mirror when accelerating, and gobs of soot are sometimes ejected at the rear. Other data: oil consumption not measurable between changes; fuel has been up to 60mpg but is falling; starting and running are normal; temp gauge normally just below 80° but went up to 95° in a traffic jam recently. -

The car ran fine before the oil leak and there were no electrical connections on the oil cooler. I cant understand why the car is having this lean running problem and the electrical fault light is showing, any advice would be gratefully received. -
Oil Additives - Any good? 12 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Negative equity re the finance means the cars will have to run to about 120,000 (very hard) miles before they can be replaced. Is it worth using oil an oil additive to preserve engine life? Are they just a bit of clever marketing, or do they really make a difference? I've always thought that if whatever is in them is any good, the oil producers would be putting the stuff in anyway. -

The dealer told me this was impossible, and I reiterated that I was the only person with access to the car, and that I had not added to, or changed the oil. I would be really grateful if anyone with any knowledge about this could hint at what the problem could be, if it is related to the oil in any way, or if it could be something else? -

Now I know that you have to be very specific about the oil that goes into these PD diesel engines and the handbook only gives the VW part number for the oil. So, should my wife a. Go to Halfords (its closeby) and ask them for a litre of the correct oil for the PD engine and they would know what one to use? -
Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - Service Queries 4 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Hi All Ive just been thinking about this and was looking for some advice In about 6 months time my Astra G 1.6 8v '52 Plate will be due a service. to me a service amounts to nothing more than a oil&filter/spark plugs/change, for aprox £150 (Dealer wanted £200) when I took it to them last year) This year however as the car has done 45,000 miles its overdue a cambelt change and will be looking to get this done - however AFAIK the waterpump will have to be changed and while they have got the belt of im looking to get the thermostat replaced as well I was wondering if its cheaper to get a service and the belt/pump/thermostat changed - or Just ask them to Change the oil&filter/plugs/airfilter/belt/waterpump/stat and not get the book stamped Ive also been thinking about taking it to my indipentant garage instad of a Vauxhall dealer - obvously I will ring them and enquire when the time is nearer - i was just wondering how other BR's do it and thoughts Thanks in advance -

This has been identified as possibly the chain cam tensioner not performing properly. The previous owner did not have the car serviced for a couple of years, so the oil was pretty thick. An oil change has not solved the problem. any suggestions would be welcome -
10W40 in VW PD TDI - bad news? 1 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I have recently had the misfortune of a small garage putting the wrong oil in my VW Passat 130 TDI. It's 10W40 and I thought that would be ok, but later learnt that there's PD specific oil at 5W40 designed for the PD engines. Is this 10W40 going to damage the engine instantly, or can I change it in the next couple of weeks / months? -

Hi Can anyone help with a wee problem I have with my 1996 Suzuki Swift 1300 gls.I recently changed the oil and filter and after that a "check engine" light came in the dash.I checked the usual oil,water,fan belt etc no problem.Car runs fine and i am told it might be a blown fuse,can anyone confirm this and any idea which fuse it is.Any help much appreciated. -

I've been using GTX Magnatec for some time now, in both a Yaris and Primera P12. I'm happy with the oil, just what do you all think ? I am servicing both vehicles myself now, and tend to change oil every six months. Have used Mobil 1 before, but some time ago in a different car ! I assume Magnatec is a semi synthetic. -

Planned to do the oil change plus filter on my Carina E that I bought in February this morning. It started well enough with the Pela pump removing 3 litres of used oil. The car had always been serviced at a Toyota main dealer and I did wonder how tight they put the filter on - they put it on VERY tight in fact!! -

I pushed it back home. I need to know how high are the chances I ruined my car for good. Tomorrow I'll drain all the oil and put back some new one. Do you reckon that's enough? I mean, after I change the oil, can I just drive it (if it starts)? Thank you very much guys, I'm pretty freaked out, for I have no money to repair it or buy another one ! -

I need to change the oil, coolant and brake fluid in my 150k 306 diesel which I bought six months ago. After I've bought all the fluids and spent hours reading my haynes manual to find bleed valves and things, is it worth it? -
2003 corsa 1.4 automatic 5dr hatch - auto box problem 9 Feb 2017 (Forum)
When I go to pull away the box seems to drop itself into neutral but as soon as I touch the accelerator with a little jerk the gearbox engages and it drives away. I've checked the oil level which seems fine and the oil seems reasonably clean. Do not want to pay for a gearbox service/oil change etc if this fault is obviousley something else unless a service is a first step to discovering fault Appreciate any ideas Thanks -

Left car at work until I could get it booked in a few days later. On that trip there was an ton of smoke and there was oil coming out of the exchaust. Mechanic said he could change the turbo but it may be something else which may cause it to fail again. Any ideas. Would really appreciate any help. -
Ford Fiesta (2000 - 2002) - oil sump 17 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I took my 2002 ford fiesta in to be serviced today at my local Ford garage, and while changing the oil the sump plug would not go back in. The garage said the threads had gone on the sump and I now need a new sump cost £105 - has anyone heard of this happening to the Ford Fiesta 1.4 d zetec before?
