  • CO2 emissions petrol cars - reprogramming? 8 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Two things I've read recently have struck me. 1) Manufacturers compete with one another to program the ECU so that emissions in one car are slightly less than in a competitor's. 2) A Dodge, I think, with CVT is programmed in such a way as to give engine braking. If it is possible to re-program to reduce emissions what do you lose elsewhere?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 2000 (x reg) 1.6 zetec missfire 25 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I have engine management light on took it to 1 garage and they detected 4th cylinder missfire. so changed coil pack, leads and plugs. still no joy missfire still there so taken it to another garage and they've detected 1st and 4 th missfire. they have done compression test passed and all plugs are sparking. i have no idea of the codes detected at the minute but second garage are thinking it could be the ecu. any ideas would be greatly appreciated many thanks
  • Honda Accord UK (2003 - 2008) - 2003 2.4ivetec type s - Fitting LPG 11 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Not taking into account the cost of the kit etc, Is there any reason it wouldn't work, I have been looking on the net at different kits and one company does a sequetial kit, with independant injectors and being run from the cars own ECU? etc etc Does anyone have any advice on which kit to go for if at all. Thanks, Mick
  • Contact cleaner. Should I use it yes or no ? 6 Dec 2007 (Forum)
In the past I would pull off any push on connectors, give a squirt of contact cleaner and reconnect ( about every couple of years). I never touched the main ecu though. I would only do this with the ignition off. As electrics have progressed I am now no longer sure if this practise is safe/wise. What do you think ? Please ignore the car selected only I could not post till the boxes were filled in (the computer says no!).
  • Mazda 323 (1998 - 2003) - Abs & Traction sensor fault 3 Oct 2007 (Forum)
apart from this little niggle, great car. thanks for any help on this topic, if i go to mazda i could be spending hundreds if not 2 thousand (a faulty ECU)
  • Astra DTI Loss of Power 26 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I know this is not supposed to be lightening quick however I cant get it going even in the low gears. It is slow to pull away from junctions, go up hills, overtake etc. There is no ECU warning light appearing and every now and again it comes to life whereby I can just about keep it from spinning the tires. When this happens it will stay this way until I turn off the engine and then it reverts back to its usual sluggish self.
  • on choke??? Astra 1.6 16v (yr 2000) 30 Jul 2006 (Forum)
i have a astra 1.6 16v year 2000, when i drive from cold the car seems to judder like its on choke, if the lights are at green and i have done 4 miles or so its still the same, however if they are at red and i stop the revs are at 11000rpm and drop down to 800rpm as normal then all is fine!! i have seen on here it might need the ecu re-programing?? or is there anything else that holds the revs?? its fine when warm i service the car every 10,000mls regardles any ideas??
  • Rover 75 air flow meter fitting 24 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I sourced a meter for £110 (compared to Rover's £180 before VAT). Just wondering about fitting the meter. Is it a serious job for mechanics only??? Does the ECU error message on next service make a difference to the running of the engine?? Sorry if that sounded ignorant, I'm in over my head methinks.
  • MOT cat test, pre 199? 14 Sep 2005 (Forum)
So a car from before this date fitted with a cat from new can have the cat removed and still be ok for the MOT? It would then be tested as a "non CAT" car. Please explain how the ECU would handle this situation. Any benefits I might expect, apart from a less stressful MOT test for the car. Any disadvantages, except environmental ones. Thanks
  • 1995 vw Golf Autobox probs 7 Jun 2005 (Forum)
The problem that I am having is that, sometimes during driving the gearbox 'hunts' through the gears causing the car to jump all around the place, which is quite scary! I had a diagnostics test done on the Auto ECU and it came back with an intermitent fault with the multifunction switch, which I have changed. Since then the problem is still there, and I have given up on driving the car because it is too dangerous to drive.
  • Fiesta Starting Problem 18 May 2005 (Forum)
I have a query related to the new Fiesta TCDI , it has a wierd starting problem , it always starts from cold , however with the car hot , if it is parked for over 15 min it will not start , the engine just cranks for about 20 secs ( when the ECU times you out ), it will start up to the 15 min but gets less likely the nearer you get to 15 min. However , if you then leave it about 30 min more it will start . There are no indicator light problems and the car does not log a fault code .
  • Astra 98 Blowing bulbs 28 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I seem to have a similar problem as BobG "Blowing bulbs and ECUs. Renault Megane" My Astra keeps blowing headlight bulbs. I have been advised to add an extra bit of wiring (please excuse my complete lack of technical knowledge). This extra piece of wiring apparently gets attached somewhere between the switch and the light.
  • Subaru Impreza Import remapping 24 Jan 2004 (Forum)
He has been advised against octane boosters as these in time will damage the cat and don't really do alot. So to run this car to its potential it should have its ECU remapped or face a melt down pushing to a std. 280bhp. Subaru UK don't touch them. The question is who is the best to approach from experience. He has a couple of names, so he's comparing your opinions.
  • Catalysts on diesels 19 Dec 2003 (Forum)
(My friend's V-reg Saxo diesel doesn't have a cat fitted) Secondly, would removing the cat be detrimental to the performance/economy of the car. I've heard that it might confuse the ECU and give poor acceleration and economy. Any thoughts? thanks Rob
  • Renew Warranty? Or not? 21 Nov 2003 (Forum)
But I do fear something very expensive going bang or just ("silence") on my '97 2.5. Steering ram? ECU? HP pump? But, there again, the definitions of "mechanical failure" made by Warranty Holdings are restricted to things actually breaking. Snapping, falling in half. So they may weasel out of any potential claim.
  • Volvo 240 cat removal 15 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Obviously given its age the cat can be removed but is it a simple process of using the downpipe from an earlier pre-cat car or simply smashing the honeycomb out of it with a broomstick a la HJ's advice? Anyone know if this car would need an ECU remap or would it be able to work life out for itself? My only concern is I'd not want to adversely affect the performance of the car. Cheers in advance - Dan J
  • Vectra DI engine management light 11 Mar 2002 (Forum)
The car runs great and consistantly returns about 49 mpg. I am not concerned about this, but why does the light come on? Is the ecu making some adjustments? I have a tuning box fitted btw, which I guess could be to blame! Any general experiences of this? Thanks
  • electronic ignition 7 Sep 2001 (Forum)
On a distributorless ignition system, my understanding is that a notch on the flywheel/crank or whatever, depending on the model, passes a sensor which sends a signal to the ECU, which in turn earths the coil circuit, and a spark is delivered to the plug. What I'm struggling with is if the engine speeds up, and more ignition advance is needed, you cannot get the spark any sooner- as the notch has not reached the sensor yet, and the flywheel cannot advance.
  • Astra H 1.6 Z16XER - Astra H vvt 1.6 intake manifold ?? 23 Jun 2024 (Forum)
Ive seen this video of a corsa making a similar noise and this was caused by loose swirl flaps inside the inlet manifold. removing the vacume pipe stops the noise. My question is does my inlet manifold have swirl flaps  controlled by the ECU ? If so could this cause the noise? Any help would be great. Many thanks
  • Citroen c3 Picasso. 1.6 HDI 2010 - Power staring failure 7 Sep 2023 (Forum)
Tried the YouTube fuse F7.. Battery is strong.  Where do I start? I hear there's an ecu which could be the problem.  Can these steering components be used second hand or are they coded. Steering sensor adjustments etc? What's the best component to send for re build? I'm getting the codes read tomorrow..
