  • Why do cars have cambelts? 30 May 2006 (Forum)
My 1987 Mazda 323 doesn't have a cambelt, the result of which means that even a full service ( oil/filter, coolant, plugs, brake fluid, air filter ) only comes to about £120 if that. My question is, does having a cambelt really improve the car or is it a money making scheme by manufacturers that they build in when they dont have to?
  • Freelander 1.8 xei 1998 Oil Sludge. 16 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I am also aware of probs with the head gaskets on early Freelanders and am concerned about this. We are also losing coolant like it's going out of style !! Looking forward to some top tips.
  • 306TD Water Loss 4 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Hi my 306 turbo diesel has started to loss water rapidly, it used to lose about a pint of water over a couple of weaks which was acceptable but now it has progressed to being 3quarters of the expansion tank over a day. i know it's not the headgasket as the topend was rebuilt not so long ago and ive checked it. i can't see any obvious leaks so wondered if there was a known common problem? what about the core plugs?(think thats there name, round inserts in top of block near coolant drain plug?) cheers chris
  • Golf Mk2 water leak mystery 23 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I have a 1986 C Golf GTi 1800 that I have to top the coolant up on with about a pint of water a week. We've replaced loads of hoses, even the cap on the filler bottle, and it still loses water. There's never any trace of water anywhere, there's nothing in the oil so it's not head gasket.
  • VW Golf - leaking radiator connection 27 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I have a VW Mk 2 Golf 1300. I am getting a coolant leak from the radiator bottom hose connection. I replaced the bottom hose and clip but it still leaks. When I tighten the hose clip the leak gets much worse. Is the actual radiator male connector faulty?
  • DIY aircon service 27 May 2004 (Forum)
drove past the local aircon service place and they have a sign out "DIY aircon topup" from £7.00 Turns out it is a can of 134a with a screw adapter to "topup" the coolant. I always through that the gas was added by weight rather than pressure, so unless you remove what is already in - how would you know how much gas to add? or do this kits just work on the pressure within the circuit?
  • 160psi all round-Head gasket ok? VW Golf 5 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Happy new year everybody. I\'ve lost half a litre of coolant in the last 2000 miles from somewhere. So I did a compression test, and all cylinders come up 160psi, within 2 psi. It\'s a mk2 Golf Gti 8v. Can anyone tell me whether the head gasket looks sound from this, and I should look for the leak elsewhere - or that it ain\'t necessarily so?
  • Fuel Guage, Mk3 VW Golf 26 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Fuel guage stopped working on MK3 VW Golf... Was working fine yesterday. Changed front brake pads, brake servo hose and coolant leak. Guage read 1/4 tank before fixing these things, now reads zero...... Wiring from fuel sender to guage seems OK (reads 400 ohms). Fuel sender seems to be open circuit... Do people reckon the sensor just died at a very coincident time, or am I missing something here?
  • ZX Rad Flushing 12 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Very occasionally, the temp light on my 94 1.4i Cit ZX comes on. Its usually after about 30 mins of town driving. Doesn't seem to lose coolant, no emulsification of the oil. I'm going to test the thermostat at the weekend and thought while its out I'd give the radiator and engine a flushing. The only thing that bothers me is that the bottom hose of the rad looks a bit fiddly to get to - has anyone done this before on a Cit and got any pointers?
  • Xsara maint indicator. 25 Jan 2003 (Forum)
. - Airbag warning lights on, wires under seats faulty. - Leaking oil, oil filter put on too tight when in for service. - Leaking coolant, thremostat housing replaced. Not bad for an 18 month old car!
  • Punto GT Head gasket? 22 Oct 2002 (Forum)
-Idling/running problems(during idling the engine sometimes hunts between 300-1200rpm especially when cold.Whilst trying to drive in this condition acceleration feels jumpy to say the least.) -Gradual loss of coolant. -White exhaust smoke during operating temperature. The car has been to Fiat a few times and all they have done is changed the Lambda sensor to no avail.Charged me £200 total for the 2 visits. No engine overheating.Does this sound like a blown gasket?
  • Trigard vs. Conventional Anti-freeze? 2 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Yesterday I was in the store, and I picked up a container which looked similar; but on reading the label it is now an advanced protection, but otherwise conventional, ethylene glycol based coolant. It?s recommended by Merc and Saab, so it?s obviously good stuff, but I?m wondering if these or other mfrs would consider that Trigard would give even better protection, and what is the difference between these formulations anyway?
  • VW Golf Hassles 3 Sep 2001 (Forum)
This morning upon investigation there's virtually no oil in the sump & a thick whitish substance in the coolant reservoir. The head gasket has gone hasn't it ? It's going to cost me a lot to put right isn't it ? Any ideas ? Thanks
  • Nissan 200 SX 20 Aug 2001 (Forum)
A friend of mine is thinking of buying the following from a local Nissan dealer: 99T 200SX Touring auto - £12995 BUT it's only done 3000 miles - which to me means that it was registered in 99 to get a sales bonus and, apart from the odd drive, it's been sitting there ever since! So - does this make it a bad buy. If not, what should he get done before buying it...e.g. oil, coolant, ATF fluid??? Also, how much should he pay - I reckon no more than 12K... thanks
  • Subaru Justy 10 Mar 2001 (Forum)
Running my second Subaru Justy (1990 GL II) have noticed over this winter mayonnaise on the oil filler cap I recall that the previous car did this. There doesn't appear to be any water in the coolant or any loss of water. The rocker cover is plastic with a metal plate inside. Could it just be condensation on short journeys? I doesn't tend to be too bad after motorway journeys. Any suggestions?
  • Suzuki Vitara - Should have followed my own advice 17 Sep 2024 (Forum)
It meant kicking our heels for four hours. And that was “While you wait” service. They reported coolant leak stains but said it might be historic as levels were OK. They suggested I monitor it for 250 miles. Next day I checked the coolant level after 50 miles. It was low, just over the mark. I smelt a rat re the level having been properly checked at the service.
  • Renault Clio - Consumer act 2015, refund due to fault 18 Aug 2017 (Forum)
I booked the car back into the garage telling them that the car was still loosing coolant and I have now found out that the coolant has been getting into the engine via the cyilindar head and it's now been sent to France to find the fault.  Due to me only having the car for more than 30 days and under 6 months, I am able to use the consumer act 2015 and reject the car for a full refund since Renault have had there one change to repair the car.

  • Vag 1.6 tdi overheat 27 Dec 2020 (Forum)
My mk6 golf 1.6 tdi rise the temparature hand over 90 just as I pulled into my drive tonight. I let it cool down and checked the coolant, it was still at the correct level and no visbile leaks/contamiination. There was plenty of heat coming through the vents when I turned the car off. I went out a small drive, but when I come to a steep hill where I live it started to rise up over 90.
  • Eco boost engine 30 Sep 2020 (Forum)
Yes they had problems with corroding degas pipes affecting the cooling which would then overheat and then cause engine problems ( as any engine would without coolant) afaik this has been sorted with ford even replacing engines foc in some cases, I’m on my third car powered by an eco boost engine with no problems whatsoever including engines,  has enough time now passed to allow some leniency towards the ecoboost?
