  • European cars - Time to be Controversial 6 Jan 2012 (Forum)
I am bracing myself for the hate mail as I write this. I read this forum regularly and there is a theme running through the majority of technical and discussion postings here - they involve European cars. There I said it. For sure Asian branded cars are not perfect but based on the gripes and grizzles at Honest John website they ain't far off being superb.
  • Stupid EU bike rules --- DAY GLO MAN 28 Dec 2011 (Forum)
Just their practice of lending  billions of euros to countries who cannot afford to pay it back prooves these idiots that run Euroland havent an ounce, or is that a gram of common sence between them.
  • Renault 2002 Laguna II Expression 2.0 5 speed - Engine power loss under load and/or miss at idle 24 Dec 2011 (Forum)
In the first situation, I have found that flooring the accelerator results in the car regaining power with quite a jerk.  The car will continue to intermittently lose power for 2 or 3 km and then run OK.  I recently drove the car about 300km before this happened - and this was at the top of a long climb.  No warning lights or temperature issue. If power loss happens when starting, depressing the clutch allows the engine to return to idle - ie, it doesn't stall, although it may idle roughly.
  • Citroen C3 1.4 LX Petrol Manual - Citroen C3 - three issues, not sure if connected > 17 Dec 2011 (Forum)
They don't have a lot of money, so I've given them a rough idea of the costs if the PAS pump or rack has gone or if it needs a new speedo. I've told them that taking it somewhere to get a proper diagnostic run would be the best option in any case. Thanks for your time guys
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 07 1.6 dampness/water leak into lhs boot 12 Nov 2011 (Forum)
After heavy rain it isn't soaking but just feels damp, a hell of a frustrating issue as other than this the car is ok. The service reception told me that the 3rd rear brake light fills with water and then runs round and down, think she was a little mixed up there. I unscrewed the two screws that fix the rear LH side light clusters in place, I couldn't remove the lens but saw a load of dead leaf and grime trapped underneath the black plastic strip which houses the two screws, any one help please.
  • FORD MONDEO ZETEC 5 DOOR HATCHBACK 2L Petrol 2002 - Ford Mondeo 2002 Petrol Cuts out whilst driving 11 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Rev Counter falls off to zero (despite the fact that the car is still doing 50 in gear) When the above happens if I press the clutch pedal down the following happens: Ignition light turns off Transmission light turns off Engine runs at idle speed Rev Counter rises to indicate idle speed (about 850 rpm) I have taken it to a garage who advised me that the problem may be an earth problem or the alternator.
  • Chrysler Grand Voyager 3.3 LX - Voyager 3.3LX starting problem, no spark at plug 4 Nov 2011 (Forum)
It is not worth spending £1200 + as the car is not worth much more, although it does look and run great.  Can anyone help please?
  • Volkswagen Passat - VW Passat 1998 Misfire when under load 18 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Moving from the lights, 2nd the third, third to forth (less noticable but there). Once on an even plane everything runs well When idling its fine and it starts most of the time, first time. Hot or cold makes no difference. When it happens, i need to clutch and rev over 3000 then try again. One or two hairy roundabout moments as you can guess.
  • economical car recommendations? 13 Oct 2011 (Forum)
I don't mind keeping a car for a good few years, but I worry that if I buy I'll be clocking up around 25k miles pa and that that will make resale pretty painful. However I've been warned that leasing may not work out particularly economic in the long run... My budget needs to be under 10K, and I don't want something that is too old/has too many miles on the clock already. Maybe this is an impossible dream(!) I really don't know much about cars so I'd welcome any advice!
  • Peugeot 306 1.9 - Peugeot key fob/key 19 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Long story short, he met me and unlocked the car with a coat hanger, he said he doesn't lock the car and the batteries have run out. Been having a think today and I know nothing about cars, and have never had a car with central locking or immobliser, but the key works to start the car, but wont lock or unlock the doors, even putting the key in the door wont lock it.
  • Mercedes Vito 110cdi - Starting problems with Vito 110cdi van 16 Aug 2011 (Forum)
After filling up with fuel at Sainsburys my van took  longer to start after stopped The problem continued to get worse and was a problem starting the next 3 times and then wil not start at all My friend came round and took a look and removed the air manifold from the air filter and sprayed some starter aid in fro,m a tin then the van started soon as key was turned but when switched off after about 15 mins of running it again would not start and the only way to start this is to do the same as he done I wonder if the problem is electrical or maybe just due to dirty fuel When I was replacing the air filter as a way of eliminating possible problems I caught the back of the  fuel pressure sensor and the nipple on the back seemed to just easily snap off making me wonder if the problem may have been this part being cracked before as it seemed to break of at the smallest of touches hav enow ordered a new replacement part anyway I also bought a new fuel filter which I intend having fitted soon as possible The thing I wish to know is why it only starts with the can of starting spray Any help would be thankfully received John
  • Vauxhall Astra MkV 1.7 CDTI (diesel) - Engine management light 11 Aug 2011 (Forum)
I can get rid of it by switching off the engine (declutching obviously), switching back on and then bump starting it. It then stays off for the rest of the run AND I don't get the problem when restarting it after a short stop. I think this last information is key. It's an 05 plate, ex-poilice car with 158,000 miles and on the ORIGINAL battery. The built in hydrometer does not show green after sitting (ie, not charged) and that coupled with the extra cranking time leads me to believe it might be a battery problem.
  • Peugeot 306 - 306 rotates but wont start 7 Aug 2011 (Forum)
everytime i went to start the car it struggled to start and when it did start would stall straight away until it was warm however everytime i approached a junction it would stall. i called the RAC out and they couldnt find the problem but suggested i change the relay behind the ECU, which i did but the problem still persisted, i took it to the garage to be plugged into the machine and they said there were no faults and it was probably because it had been stood and needed to be run in again. after runnin it around a while it was still them same, however this morning when i went to it it wouldnt start but kept cranking. i took the a HT lead off and pluuged a spark plug into it but there was no spark while cranking the engine.
  • Ford Focus Estate - confusing price guides 2 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Not wishing to be either a cheapskate nor a spendthrift, but willing to pay a fair price for a Focus Estate 1.6 Zetec or Ghia, 05-08 from a main dealer, I have bought a Parker's Guide, consulted Parker's online, obtained a CAP price for one at auction (which I was told are currently running at £500 below actual prices?), and purchased a Glass's price online. My first surprise was that they appear to be cheaper than the equivalent hatchbacks. Glass's only quoted for the Zetec, so that's what I give the figures for here: 05/55reg 1.6 petrol manual:    Firstly Parker's Private-£3315 Ind dealer-£3680 Main dealer-£4030  ; Secondly Glass's Private-£4130 Dealer retail £5160 I realise that they are not very numerous compared to the hatchbacks, and therefore harder to sample prices for, but can that really account for the wild variations in the quoted prices?

  • Peugeot 306 HDi - Knocking noise at front of car 17 Jul 2011 (Forum)
I have a V reg 306 diesel. Which runs really well.  However the car has developed a knock which appears to come from the front drivers side in the area near to the front wheel. The knock is not ever present. It does not happen whilst driving in a straight line and does not happen when driving over bumps or generally over bumpy ground.
  • Peugeot 106 - Oil leak and sludge in water 30 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Hi, i bought a 1998 106 1.1 for a cheap run around a couple of weeks ago. it's got 83000 on the clock and got full service history. the problem i've got is that i noticed a creamy brown sludge in the radiator cap and the odd bit floating on the top. the lady we bought it off had the head gasket replaced and cylinder head skimmed at 78000 (2 years ago) and i have the paper work for this. the car doesn't seem to overheat and the heater works fine. there is no mayo on the oil cap or dipstick. i took the radiator cap off and started the car and the coolant level raised up but didn't bubble. the bottle does look very dirty on the inside, but i put that down to the previous blown head gasket. to add to this there is a oil leak and it's all over  the sump. is it possible the head gasket could have blown again or could the sludge be from the previous hgf and they never flushed the system out properly. not too worried about the oil leak for now cos i done a 50mile trip and had no oil drips in my parking space after. if anyone could help, i would be very grateful
  • Citroen C15D Van - electric no-go 29 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Turn the key the first click, red battery lights ignite on dash, second click no preheater lights ignite, third click , sort of click and buzz from pre-heater relay. Running out of options. No sign of burning on any connection or brown staining, all fuses o.k. (at least the eight on the bulkhead are fine) Any help would be appreciated. Many Thanks,Mike
  • Astra 1997 GSi 16v 2.0 - Loss of power, and sudden jerking 24 Jun 2011 (Forum)
This only happens when it is cold, then it seems fine. If I have no load on the engine, i.e. just parked in the driveway, then the engine runs up to 6k rpm without any hesitation and it sounds perfect. To exclude the EGR, I blocked it off, and it is exactly the same symptoms, and no engine light, or error codes from the ECU. Thanks, Ryan.
  • Ford Fiesta - Fiesta Engine Trouble 1.25 zetec 16v 3 Jun 2011 (Forum)
also, probably unrelated the heating is always on, the fan speed dial still works but sometimes the temperature one does not, turning the air con on does not make any difference you only get hot air. This promlem only occurs after running the engine to temp, stopping and then restarting (visit to the shops etc)
