I have a Petrol 1999 cc Zetec Mondeo.
Whilst driving at a constant speed or sometimes whilst accelerating the following happens:
- Ignition light comes on
- Transmission light comes on
- Engine appears to stop.
- Rev Counter falls off to zero (despite the fact that the car is still doing 50 in gear)
When the above happens if I press the clutch pedal down the following happens:
- Ignition light turns off
- Transmission light turns off
- Engine runs at idle speed
- Rev Counter rises to indicate idle speed (about 850 rpm)
I have taken it to a garage who advised me that the problem may be an earth problem or the alternator. The earchs were cleaned and the alternator replaced. The problem returned and the raplacement alternator appeared to be physically faulty (replaced under warranty). Further diagnosis shows that no fault codes are generated.
Sometimes the fault will also appear temporarily when driving over a bunp/pothole but it does not always need a stimulus to make the fault occur.
does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to how the likely fault can be identified?.
Thanks in advance
