  • Citroen 2.0 HDI power loss 20 Oct 2006 (Forum)
A quick engine stop/start clears the problem until it occurs again maybe after 5 mins, maybe next day. This suggest that it's electronic and the car is OK running around off the motorway but I have no more clues.
  • Which fuel? 1 Oct 2006 (Forum)
If there is a proper reason for the use of 98 RON fuel then I will do so, but it seems most odd that the manual states 95 is perfectly acceptable if it would prefer you used 98. I am currently using 95 RON fuel and am returning 37mpg on Motorway runs and 30mpg in mixed driving. Whats the deal here? Thanks!
  • Supercar child seats 22 Sep 2006 (Forum)
They are all too big to fit in the back. Obviously there aren't many supercars that get used on the school run, but is there a child seat manufacturer that can help?? One option would be not to bother with child seats, and when I'm stopped by Mr Plod, I ask him to sit in the back of the car. I'm sure that when he gets back from the chiropractor he'll agree that they are already child seats!!
  • Can you add a seat in boot of an estate 7 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Hello, We have a Ford Focus estate from 2001. We are very happy with it, but soon would like to share a school run and need one extra seat. We don't want to have to swap it for something else as we wouldn't get a good price - although it's in good mechanical condition, it is a family car and has been bashed about a bit.
  • 306 hdi air con 24 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Just got the car back and the mechanics told me that he found a leak on the metal hose that runs in front on the radiator where the bracket is ( i know thats the weak point on these cars) I just wanted some advise for when it goes back in a couple of weeks. The car is 2001 (y) so id love to have the air con working.
  • Oil, ambient temp. 23 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Can't really think of how to title it, but when you're doing an oil change in your car do you actually read the little chart thing in the manual where it tells you what oil is suitable for what temperature, or do you just go for the broadest range multigrade you can find? Only realised today I can safely run mine on 15w40 even as low as -10 C (according to this chart). All I normally do is bung in whatever fully synth 5w30/40 (30 for Ford, 40 for Pug) is cheapest at the time.
  • Diesel engine life 7 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Hi Folks I remember many years back a friend telling me diesel engines ware normally good for double the amount of millage than a petrol engine - engines running at lower revs and diesel having a lubricant in the fuel were i seem to recall the main resons- . At that time before ecus he said around 100k-120 - pertrols and 200k for diesels. In recent posts on this forum it seems petrols engines are good for between 120-200k and i was wondering if diesel engines would still do double the amount of miles than a petrol - and if not why not??
  • Vauxhall Vectra Air Con Fault 3 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I have a 2.0CDi Vectra - 1999 version which runs fine, however when the aircon is put on it only blows out warm air and no cold. Went to Halfords and purchased an aircon coolant refill kit, only to find I cant find the refill point under the bonnet.
  • Rover 75 fitting air flow meter 25 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Has anybody done this one themselves and have any tips? Does the ECU error message on next service make a difference to the running of the engine??
  • Replacing lap belt with a 3 point belt? 17 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I'm sure it can be done, I think the real would have to be bolted to the boot floor, but does it need a top support, or can it just run over the top of the seat? Saftey is of course the most important point, as at some point in the next year or two my two yongest will outgrow their group 1 car seats so I will need a proper belt. Also what would be a fair price for the conversion?
  • Vectra DI 2nd hand diesel pump programin 16 May 2006 (Forum)
Will tick over but wont rev - just goes a little rough when I put my foot on the throttle. Also hard to start if left overnight, runs on 2 or 3 cys and black smokes for 5 mins. then clears and ticks over OK but won't rev. I think it may be the pump. If I fit a second hand unit from the scrap yard, do I need to get the electronics re-programmed?
  • corsa 1.2 2001 stalling when cruising 14 May 2006 (Forum)
I have a sept 2001 1.2 manual petrol corsa and whilst cruising the car appears to stall for a moment, the rev counter drops right down, then it picks up again, and the service light (car and spanner) comes on. Car runs perfectly otherwise. I don't think i can flash the fault codes on this car, would thi be correct? So before I take it into vauxhall, has anyone met this problem before and know the likely cause. I have read there is a common problem with the EGR valve on this car?
  • Vectra 04 - petrol fumes 26 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Over the last few weeks I have noticed a strong petrol smell from my car.Mainly when in the car is stationary with the engine ticking over after a run in the car.It was in the Dealership twice and they said they couldn't fault the car and couldn't find the smell. (see http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=39213 ) In the last week an emission warning light came on and has stayed on.This is due to a faulty oxygen sensor. My car goes in to get this replaced next week.I think the garage will use this as the explanation for my problem.Hopefully this will turn out to be the case.Would this indeed cause this issue?
  • Tow bar electrics Peugeot 407 10 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I have had twin sockets fitted for Caravan towing but there is no feed for the fridge ( should only be live when engine runs due to high current flow) have contacted dealer where fitted and they say they dont normally connect the fridge supply, just permanent power for the van when static. I know this is a bit obscure but does anyone know anything about this?
  • Feasibility of Road Charging? 9 Mar 2006 (Forum)
On the basis that this relatively simple project is 10 years late, what chance do BR members see for the successful running of a database to charge every road user for their mileage, bearing in mind that it a Government scheme and will involve the use of computers?

  • Daihatsu Cuore front brakes 16 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I have 2 problems; one there are 4 bolts at back of caliper two on rubber mounts the problem is which two to remove to remove caliper. The second problem is that the pads also run on guide pins and there is no obvious access at the back to tap them out. Assuming I get caliper off what torque should bolts be retorqued to. Many thanks in advance Ian
  • What revs do you go up to? 13 Feb 2006 (Forum)
My rover 214 is on 111,000 and my 75 on 216,000. Of course, they have never been thrashed from cold and only after a long run do their legs get stretched! What do other backroomers take the tacho to and does it do any long term damage?
  • New VW Passat 9 Feb 2006 (Forum)
The problem with motoring hacks is that they ver rarely keep car for more than 12 months, have no idea about real life running costs, and have zero knowledge on design and engineering issues (robustness and quality). Any replies appreciated.
  • Front Fogs = Fixed Penalty 19 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I must admit I did not know it was an offence and cannot see the difference between Volvos and Motorbikes with daytime running lights. I wonder if there is more to the story?
