  • Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0 CRTD - Slow rev pickup from cold. 20 Jan 2016 (Forum)
I bought it as a non runner with a snapped cambelt. Replaced all the necessary parts, got it running. Also did a full service whilst I was there, Oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, Auto box fluid etc. Problem seems to be when it is cold, and you first start in the morning, It really struggles for the rev's to pick up.
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso - Input shaft bearing - how loud is loud? 10 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Hi all,   I would like to ask how much noise - if any - is normal from a gearbox. The car is 2005 Xsara Picasso, 2.0 HDI with 86k. The symptom is the following: engine running idle, there is a barely audible whirring noise (not a rattle) when clutch is  not  depressed. The noise goes away when the the clutch pedal is fully depressed. This noise is so little that it is impossible to hear it from the inside, only when standing next to the car.
  • Smart headlight 8 Jan 2016 (Forum)
But, why does a driverless car need headlights at all ?   Can’t they have Daytime Running Lights so that they can be seen and rely on their radar.   One thing that’s encouraging; driverless cars will likely be restricted in speed. I live in a country district where sheep and lambs wander onto the road in springtime so I’m interested.
  • Peugeot 207 1.4i (07) - Engine rattle after oil top up 4 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Oil recommended was 0W-40 synthetic by Mobile which I have never used usually get 5W-30. Oil is not overfilled, car running as normal apart from the loud rattle, oil pressure etc okay.  Engine is the VW/Seat one with timing chain.  Admit it is a long time since it was serviced well over two years but still nowhere near service based on millage.
  • Ford Mondeo Estate - Shuddering when accelerating 17 Dec 2015 (Forum)
When driving to work this morning, I noticed a shudder everytime I put my foot down to accelerate (fairly hard but not overly hard). Once I then reach a cruising speed (any speed from 0mph), it seems to run smooth. If I gently acceleerate, there doesn't appear much shuddering at all.  I know it definitelty isn't the balancing; have checked the tyres for bulges, have tried the steering on both left and right locks and can find no clicking, have checked the wheel nuts (all fine), and checked the engine which appears to be stable on the mounts.
  • Megane TCe 115, Kia cee'd (pro), Hyunai i30 - Which one shall I buy? 14 Nov 2015 (Forum)
I need a car for work generally, so extra urban mpg is important. About six times a year  I do a few long runs of between 140/310 miles. From what I have read the Megane's turbo and injection engine isn't so good for urban mpg........? What exactly am I looking for? -Good mpg/petrol -Modern looking -Comfy - regarding sitting position/motorway and high speed noise.
  • Rover 75 non start 27 Oct 2015 (Forum)
They then revved the engine to 4000 revs from cold (making me even more unhappy) and then turned it off, failed to start and then did the same again. I had to leave the engine running for an hr whilst I found a garage and then drove about 15miles. I got to the garage and tried to restart the car - started first time!! The garage has just rang me this morning saying it started first time from cold and cant find a problem.
  • Iveco Daily 70c 18 Nightmare Gear box - Reporting faults 24 Jul 2015 (Forum)
We run a 7.5 tonnes Iveco Daily, and to be honest its been a nightmare. Bought it new from main dealer and same dealer has carried out all maintenance and Vosa inspections from new. Vehicle is mainly driven by one driver 4.5 days pert week 60,000 miles per year.
  • Vauxhall Astra J 1.7 cdti ecoflex - Dreadful fuel economy 4 Jun 2015 (Forum)
I have recently bought a 62 plate Astra 1.7 cdti ecoflex (110) Sports Tourer to replace my aging 170,000 mile 1.3 cdti estate. On a 630 mile run to my holiday shack in Brittany, the old 1.3 regularly did 56+ mpg (never quite got 60 though sometimes tantalisingly close!) I foolishly thought the newer 1.7 would do about the same, but last week it did just 46mpg there and back.
  • Volkswagen Polo 1.9 S SDI - 2002 Polo SDI good reliable option? 21 Mar 2015 (Forum)
As I am on a pauper budget I'm thinking of getting an old non-turbo diesel for a reliable cheap to run basic car.  I plan to DIY. Heard little old turbo diesels not so reliable. I have a 52 reg 1.2 E Polo and it's in need of an engine overhaul (you guys have said that was a tricky engine, prone to failure if not properly maintained.
  • BMW 3 Series Coupe (E46) - BMW 318CI Timing Chain Guide (N46 Engine) N46-20 7 Feb 2015 (Forum)
There was no noise, rattle or any other indication from the engine, which has covered 58K miles, has a full service record and was running nicely. I'm told they will replace the upper guide and put in a new tensioner, as the original BMW item isn't long enough and therefore doesn't push the guide in far enough to create adequate tension on the chain.
  • Changing vehicle 1 Feb 2015 (Forum)
We need a car with easy access, reasonable power from the engine, 4 passenger doors (fussy sister!), new type automatic gearbox (no fluid flywheel - too expensive to run), reasonable amount of space inside a well-appointed cabin and good space in the boot with rear seat down if necessary.  We owned a new type Fiesta for a short period but was very disappointed with the cabin space especially in the rear, the ridiculously small rear windows, small boot and a very poor auto gearbox which continuously hunted up a down at 70 mph on undulating roads.
  • Ford Focus Mk2 1.6 (115) - Focus going into Limp Mode 22 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Since this is going to cost a fair wack, I want to check if that is a common fault with these symptoms and not just an error code thrown up due to the constant restarting the engine.  The other point to add is once the car is warmed up it runs fine, I've just taken it for a 15 mile drive, really gave it some stick, no problems.  Could it be fuel related?  It has only started happening since I filled up at a supermarket station from empty.
  • any make - Diesel versus petrol ownership...out of warranty 19 Dec 2014 (Forum)
If i was to (doubtful) buy another Diesel, say a 75k miler at 3 years, i think it might be worth running it into a Diesel workshops and get the injectors removed, overhauled/chemically cleaned and reset whilst they're out and new sealing washers fitted, also get the glow plugs removed and replaced, hopefully soon enough, those that will come undone before snapping torque is reached anyway.

  • Jaguar S-Type 2002 3.0SE - Help....gearbox issue 16 Dec 2014 (Forum)
I turned the engine off and restarted the engine then the gearbox light went off, however the engine light is still on. Engine wise, its still running sweet but the gearbox still has intermittent issues with no real fault pattern. Sometimes its fine, then it plays up.  Tomorrow its going into the specialist and they think its a sensor issue, I'm however worried the gearbox has given up the ghost.
  • Peugeot 407 SW - Over revving issues - really need help!! 3 Nov 2014 (Forum)
I have had the AA out once and they followed me to the garage (Peugoet, as he recommended), and he thought it was a over run valve?? I have today discovered (which could be relevant), that it seems to happen when its raining (sounds strange I know), but when I think back, it has been raining each time its happened, and part way into my journey when it starts - it is fine in the dry whetehr??
  • Ford Mondeo MK4 2.0 TDCI Diesel 140ps. - Ford Mondeo auxiliary belt problem 2 Nov 2014 (Forum)
I have a Ford Mondeo mk4 2.0 diesel on a 59 plate and have very stupidly managed to dislodge the auxiliary belt off one of its tensioners.I cannot get the belt back on myself so I have a mechanic coming tomorrow morning to tow the vehicle to the garage but i was wondering if the experts among you could help with a question i have. Rather than towing the car to the garage without running the engine could i do the following.... If i cut off the aux belt completely then according to my knowledge it drives the air conditioning pump, the alternator and the power steering pump, would it be safe to drive the car to the garage?
  • Honda CR-V - Vibration felt at 15-30 mph under my feet. 1 Nov 2014 (Forum)
All front end bushes look ok. As does the engine mounts. The car has been raised off the ground and run to experience the vibration.  On result of this,  what was evident was the front right wheel was rotating slightly oval shape. But almost all drive train parts have been replaced.  Clutching at straws,  the only thing I haven't done is drop the prop shaft to see if it still does the same thing.
  • Toyota Avensis, Honda Accord - Auto Avensis, Accord or something else for <£3k 12 Oct 2014 (Forum)
I'm tired of driving small hatches and now want something with a smooth ride, a comfy and spacious interior, decent acceleration, but still reliable, economical and relatively low maintenance. Oh yes, and it must be automatic. I am planning to keep the car until it runs out of steam completely so am not worried too much about resale value. So far, I am thinking of buying a large engined petrol and then converting it to LPG after a few months. That will help me spread the initial cost and also see if I like the car before spending dough on the conversion.
