Sure enough my new friend (not) was driving away in his nice Merc ML Phrases like running chip shops and organising drinks parties in distilleries come to mind I think I have read that Daimler Chrysler is in financial trouble - How could that be................... -
Volkswagen Polo Engine Noise 27 Jun 2006 (Forum)
One garage actually said - "that's just the way it is, the car is perfetly fine". Very helpful indeed! Having run out of ideas regarding a solution to the problem i thought i would turn here to hopwfully shed some light. The cam-belt was recently replaced by a VW specialist at 94,000 miles (the car currently has 103,000 on the clock). -
03 Rover 25 2.0 TD IL ...should I? 19 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Advice appreciated... I have been keeping my eyes open for a reliable economical diesel run around for a while now and I spotted the above with 25,000 miles on the clock in Autotrader. It is a private seller and they are asking £4495 which seems a bit optimistic to me after looking at the valuation guides. -
Drink Drive Record- 10th DD Offence 7 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Village drive The sheriff also handed down a three month sentence and a five year drivng ban on the second offence. The sentences will run concurrently. The court heard that police officers on patrol saw the accused driving the quad bike through the village of Cromore. 96N Peugeot 405 19.TD oil in air box 3 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I had noticed that the exhaust was getting quite smokey lately, so changed the air filter, which cured the problem - and it is now running a lot better, is much more responsive, and the excessive smoking has now disappeared. The filter was last changed 6k ago. The problem was that the left side of the filter seemed to be soaked with engine oil. -
Failed Hydraulic Tappet ? (Polo) 1 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Started it and there was a very loud clack clack clack sound. I'm pretty sure one of the tappets running completely empty. The longer the car is left the longer the tappet is audible when restarting. If left for a few hours, it'll clack for about 10 seconds. If left for days, it'll clack on for a minute or so. -
Slow Starting Honda Civic - Spark Plugs? 28 Feb 2006 (Forum)
So my question is could old/poor quality spark plugs be causing the slow starting? There are no other running problems with the engine. I was thinking of getting a set of NGK V-Grooved plugs which claim "better Cold starting"? I presume these are platinum plugs NGK code ZFR5F-11 Or could it be something else that? -
UK Car abroad more or less permantly 23 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I spend about half my time in Budapest where cars are much more expensive than in the UK.Import duties are very high and it is quite a complicated procedure. I am currently exploring many options but keep running into the same questions and can't find the answers to them- 1)Is there any insurance company that insures a UK car abroad for more than a three month period? I heard a long time ago about something like a "trippers" one year insurance used by, for example people driving around europe on an extended trip (Aussie or Kiwi style) but no internet search comes up with anything 2)If the answer to 1 is yes, (so I do not need to drive it back to the UK 4 or more times a year,) what happens with a UK car over three years old regarding the MOT? -
Mondeo, slow return to idle 16 Feb 2006 (Forum)
(the idle speed doesn't fluctuate once its got to idle). I have checked the throttle cable to ensure it is running free with no resistance, and lubricated up all the joints/pins etc on the linkage but it still refuses to go straight back down to idle, and the rev-range it occurs in is almost always the same. Has anyone else had this problem? -
Bah! - rear wheel drive 10 Feb 2006 (Forum)
We have had the following cars in our drive regularly since we bought the house three years ago: - Hyundai Trajets (V6 and Diesel) Volvo S80 2.9 Subaru Foresters Turbo and NA Suzuki Wagon R+ Honda CR-V plus lots and lots of run of the mill FWD cars and none of them gave a moments cause for concern except in very icy conditions, during which time the 4x4 cars were a doddle. What is going on? -- Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive? -
Renault Laguna 1.6 '99 ABS LIGHT 22 Jan 2006 (Forum)
They have replaced a sensor, reset the ECU, thankfully its not costing me anything, until the warranty runs out, annoyingly its always fine, when i take it to the garage. The garage is a independat garage who i trust completly as i have bought a few cars from, they took it to a specialist today, who again reset the ECU, went to pick it up , drove out the doors ......SERV and ABS Light came on, so i reversed it back in. -
ABS light on/off volvo 850 M plate 14 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Whilst Golf is in garage I've been using my Dad's M plate volvo 850GLT 2.5 20v Only 40k miles on it & needed a good run anyhow, so check all fluids, tyres, bit of VAG fuel cleaner (thank you all) & then some optimax. When all warm put the box into sport & gone for the Italian Tune Up. Done about 200 miles on it. Sure ain't a T5, but pleasant enough. -
K-Series Strange Cyl Head Undercut 31 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I checked to see if the head was warped using a straight edge and feeler guages, I found no evidence of any warping. What I did find however were strange circular undercuts running around two-thirds of the circumference of each cylinder combustion chamber. The undercuts are about 1 mm thick and .0006" deep. My findings are quite hard to explain but if anyone thinks they can help, I can sent a very clear digital photo of the undercuts via e-mail. -
vw 2e3 carb probs? icing?? 6 Dec 2005 (Forum)
ive been having a few random break downs in a 1988 1300 polo with the 2e3 carb engine seems to happen any outside temp i can be crusing along and the engine will develop, a stutter..not really a noticable miss fire, at this point the car will not accelerate and tend to gently fade away, once ive pulled over the engine just chugs away barely running at all..does not rev turning off and re starting it doesnt make any differrance..at this point i usualy open the bonnet and start poking around for loose leads or anything obvious..after a quick poke around it usualy starts up and drives normaly..not that ive fixed anything so....does that sound like carb icing?? -
Mildew on Leather after using Autoglym 4 Dec 2005 (Forum)
The mildew cleans off but soon reappears within weeks. My garage is dry but I can only keep the mildew at bay by running a dehumidifier from inside the car. I'm reluctant to keep cleaning it as presumably that puts more moisture back into the leather. It's particulalrly bad around the seams and stitching. Admittedly I did put rather a lot of autoglym care cream on the seat, as the leather was responding so well. -
High mileage Focus advice wanted? 8 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I'm thinking of buying a 1999/T reg Focus 1.8 Tdi Ghia and it seems a good buy - in good nick, well looked after, full service history, decent price according to parkers and glasses but the mileage is high at around 150k. I'm no stranger to diesels as I've run peugeot diesels for a good few years and if this was a Pug, I'd not bat an eyelid about this sort of mileage as I know they just go on and on, but I know nothing about ford diesels other than the fact that this early model TDi engine was replaced by the TDCi a while back. -

00 Omega 2.2 - 3 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The manual gives no real clues and lumps the 'spanner' light with the 'engine' light as both indicating engine electronics problems - why two are needed is beyond me. Secondly the LCD info display will report 'Check oil level' often at the end of a run. Again this can be got rid of by cycling the ingnition. Of course I have checked the oil level via the dipstick and it looks fine. There is evidence of a rocker cover and induction system oil leaks but not a huge amount. -
No Timewasters!! 23 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Whilst looking for that 'ideal first car' for my son, I noticed 2 large boxed ads in the local paper & by the style, placed I assume by a trader. Both cars are not run of the mill and are fairly desirable and reasonably priced. The mileages are not stated so presumably high. Both these ads ended with 'NO TIMEWASTERS!' boldly stated. Even if I was looking for one of these models I don't think I'd bother.
