  • BMW spare wheel size 8 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I'd prefer something more substantial but the front rims are 8inch wide and the rears 8 1/2.The answer would seem to be to carry an 8inch and drive carefully if used on the rear. I phoned BMW customer service who said that that would be illegal but that the skinny space saver was not.Can anyone shed light on this? What spares do X5 sports and 5 Series sports,(which have different size wheels) carry.

  • Car parts 6 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Inthis weeks Auto Bild there is a concern about spare parts for reasonable new vehicles.VAG said it was not producing certain parts for cars over 4 years old and BMW over six years old.Zenon headlights pre 93 are no longer available for BMW ,they can be sourced from Hella but a cost in Germany of 2000? you must buy two.If you have a BMW / over 5 years old with a few faults unless you can source parts at a scrap yard then it is cheaper to scrap it and buy another with a mot ticket.
  • Audi A6 Avant v BMW 5 Series Touring 15 Aug 2002 (Forum)
I'm looking at buying a 3 yr old diesel, probably a 1.9TDi Audi or 525d BMW with circa 30,000 to 40,000 miles on the clock. Apart from Climate Control I'm relaxed about spec. and intend to keep it for 2 - 3 yrs. I do about 25k per annum. Any thoughts on the conparison between running costs for the two cars?
  • BMW cylinder bore wear 10 Apr 2001 (Forum)
Its a bit of an old chestnut now but having just bought a 2 year old BMW 520i SE I am concerned that I may have a Pre Steel lining one. It was registered in Dec 98 with an M52 Engine. The Data plate gives a manufacturing date of Nov 98.It has covered 52000 miles and drives like a dream.

  • BMW 3 Series Compact - BMW Owned from New to Scrap 11 Aug 2020 (Forum)
The question we are both left with is that our mileage does not justify the cost of a new car but just how reliable are BMWs, Audis and Mercs as they get older? This is the only car in over 50 years of driving that has ever failed to complete a journey. We will celebrate the memories with a bottle of fizz in the sun later.
  • BMW 3 Series - Charge for fault finding while under warranty? 2 Oct 2019 (Forum)
A work colleague bought a 320 from a BMW main dealer under BMW's Approved Used scheme a couple of months back.  The car is just over a year old, with the balance of the 3-year warranty remaining etc. He asked me about some recurrent squeaking noises from the rear suspension, so I went to have a look with him (he's not mechanically-minded).
  • BMW X3 - BMW doomsday scenario 11 May 2018 (Forum)
Hi all, I am hoping you can offer some sound advice for me. Three weeks ago I bought a used BMW X3 for £3750 privately. It was from someone who is a friend of a friend and so I felt secure that I’d bought a well maintained (but high mileage car 96500 miles). Since owning it the car has failed to start on three occasions and on Friday the turbo went.
  • BMW 3 Series Touring - Steering Vibration on BMW 19 Oct 2012 (Forum)
It could then reappear again for no apparent reason. I too suspected worn suspension bushes but my indipendant BMW garage (Bentons of Ely)  identified the problem as being due to a binding front brake caliper.  So - a new caliper, two new discs and a new set of front brake pads completely cured the problem AND gave me a much livelier motor with much better fuel consumption.
  • BMW 3 series convertible 325ci - 2001 - BMW 3 series engine 'roughness' 11 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I have a BMW 3 series convertible, registered 2001, and have recently had a problem that turned out to be a faulty engine breather. This caused chronic but intermittent backfiring over a period of some weeks that the garage couldn’t isolate the cause of.

  • Small claims for engine damage indicated by oil burn? 16 May 2013 (Forum)
An oil consumption test by BMW indicates 1.3 litres per 1000 km, which is about twice BMW's maximum acceptable level for this model. Both BMW dealer and an independent mechanic state that this indicates serious engine wear: BMW dealer says the car probably needs new pistons at cost of GBP 4000.
  • BMW E30 - Electric cars are slow but can be ****** fast 10 Dec 2011 (Forum)
A quick Aussie google search and hey presto:-   Croatian tuning garage, VST Conversions, has developed a 500 horsepower (373kW) all-electric BMW E30 3 Series. That’s 373kW from a home made EV. Come on Tesla, keep up. <*** class="alignright size-medium wp-image-88792" style="display: none;" title="BMW E30 VST EV" src="http://www.caradvice.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/BMW-E30-VST-EV-625x358.jpg" alt="" width="625" height="358" /> According to the VST website, the car is capable of doing 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds, the quarter mile in 12.1 seconds and has a top speed of 280km/h.
  • BMW - Warranty work or not? 14 May 2008 (Forum)
Based on past experience, dealers did their best (or tried to give some impression of doing their best) to keep customers satisfied to protect the brand. Apparently BMW and/or its franchisee doesn\'t give a monkey\'s. People like me seem to be viewed as time-wasters. I somehow don\'t think my next car will be a BMW. --------------------------------------- *I wasn\'t surprised a) because I\'ve little faith in dealers\' ability to correct such matters, and b) because nearly new demonstrators - 330d and 325i - that I test-drove while I was there had the same problem to much the same or a lesser degree.
