  • Renault Scenic (1999 - 2003) - 2000 dci Glowplug light comes on when driving 3 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Anyone any ideas please? Can i keep using it safely? Also just changed the cambelt/tensioners, have read it is important to change the waterpump also due to causing belt failure, is this a common fatal occurance? as i have not heard this before. Any help/advice is welcome, many thanks.
  • 2000 focus 1.6 zetec vs 1998 BMW 323i se 1 Jan 2010 (Forum)
What I'm more interested in is which car is the better to drive, around town and for long distance cruising. Reliability is also important.
  • Petrol additive 7 Sep 2009 (Forum)
I need a good (cost not important) additive for unleaded petrol to stop it "going-off" when I don't use my bike for any period of time. The worst problem is when it evaporates in the float bowls of the carbs. (after a particularly long lay-off) and leaves a horrible green sticky gunge everywhere, especially in the very small jets of a four carburettor bike.
  • Diesel cars in the US 21 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Having been working with some americans recently and got chatting to them about the differences between US and the UK. Having first covered the important subjects, the price and quality of beer in our respective countries ;-) the conversion changed to cars specifically diesels there was a strong believe that they would struggle to start in the cold northern states in winter.
  • Accelerator control. 19 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I know it is simple and logical but how often do you see people blast away from a hold up only to brake heavily at the obvious one just up the road? I was taught that accelerator control is as important as clutch control, is it taught today in either car or HGV training?
  • Most relaxed at 70mph, quietest, used Jap? 25 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I'm looking to buy a used Japanese car. I had wanted a diesel automatic but they are rare. Then I realized there's something more important to me than out-and-out economy. I want serenity at seventy: a car that's nice to drive. I'm sure you know what I mean, though it's subjective and somewhat indefinable. Moreover, I need reliability so well-proven that the car I settle on is in plentiful supply secondhand; and sorry, but it must be available as an automatic.
  • BMW 3-Series E36 (1991 - 1998) - 1996 1.8 squeeking noise when drive is selected 23 Sep 2008 (Forum)
hi guys my e36 auto is making a squeeking noise when i start the car and put it into drive,it is not always there but happens nearly every day at some time or another, when i drive off and the revs increas the noise goes away, its like a dry bearing or something of that sort and is only there when car is put into drive, car is an import from japan and is in great condition with only 50 000 miles on the clock, any ideas as to what it is would be great...
  • Ford Designers 9 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Ford pay their designers handsomely, so instead of fancy anti glare mirrors and "intelligent" wipers, why can't these boffins design, on all models, a device to warn when the pads are low. Simple technology. The new Focus apparently has a warning for low tyre pressures. More important than brakes then. I have seen many complaints in other forums of the lack of thought in making it nigh on impossible to undertake basic maintainence, like changing bulbs. As has been pointed out it should be made as easy as possible.
  • Unsolicted email (spam) from Honest John 27 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I get a lot of unsolicited email everyday, something which I find quite annoying as none of it is use, and while the sender might think it hugely important, I never do. So I was really not impressed to receive an unsolicited email promoting this site, which has been sent to me as I am a member here. The terms of the site don't state that I will be sent advertising emails when I sign up, so it is definitely unsolicited spam mail.
  • Volvo V70/XC70 (2000 - 2007) - 'Service needed' light on 3 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Do any of you Volvo drivers know whether it's a non-urgent 'good idea to get a service soonish' (it was MOT'd 6 weeks ago, and had a pre-holiday small service in May), or more important? I was planning to drive 200/300 miles tomorrow - presumably that shouldn't be a problem? Thanks
  • That Skoda Badge 9 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Having told various of my intentions there still seems to be a huge issue with the brand. Yes I know the jokes are old, but working in an industry where image is important (Financial Advice) I have had comments from "You're buying a what?!" to "A poor man's VW" to "I've heard they're good but I wouldn't be seen dead in one". So, two questions: What IS the current image that driving a Skoda Octavia gives out?
  • Small Diesel Car 8 Sep 2006 (Forum)
What you think about these two models? Pros and Cons? Anything else you could suggest. Reliability and costs are the most important factors for me and I'm not bothered about image etc..Thanks!
  • MR 2 Ring gear 4 Jul 2006 (Forum)
A work colleague has a 1991 MR 2 2litre GT (import). The car can be driven when bump started no problem. When turning the ignition key there is just a wirring sound . The starter motor turns over on a bench (not under load). He has said that the ring gear can be moved with finger tip pressure so I would like to know if this is a straight forward job with any possible short cuts .
  • Impreza - £3.5K "free peace of mind" 7 Apr 2006 (Forum)
A hands-free Bluetooth mobile phone kit is also included. Is this the reply from Subaru UK to the importers (Motorpoint, Alliance etc sourcing from Malta/Cyprus) who are undercutting Subaru UK by £4-4,500 on the base WRX.
  • Where can i buy a left hand drive 6 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Why do I want a second hand left hand drive. Well I am moving to Spain and unitl you have residency you cannot import a new one. Plus, in total they charge 28% tax for the pleasure of doing so. Any help greatly appreciated.
  • sucking out engine oil 24 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I can't see the benefit to the car, as crud will settle around the bottom of the sump (where a suction device will find it hard to reach) and will drop out as the sump plug is removed. Would have though that removal of crud, is just as important as renewal of oil. Obviously easier and cheaper for dealer to change oil this way, but is it really any better, or even no worse than the traditional method? -- Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
  • Peugeot 306 1.4 petrol Cambelt interval 1 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Hi How important is the 3-year/36k miles cambelt change interval as stipulated in HJ's car-by-car breakdown? I ask because a friend has just bought one at 5 years old (V-reg) and 38,000 miles. He does not know the service history, so I am presuming the belt hasn't been changed.
  • Carrying NCD to 2nd car. 12 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Good point - they will mirror NCD to another vehicle policy with them - and £35 off as new business discount. so up to 65% NCD for your weekend toy. (but no imports or modifications). Bad Point - If you drop insurance, they will only give you six months gap before dropping your NCD, whereas before I think it was 2 years. Bad point - compulsary excess up to £350 Martin p.s. their website quotes playing up at the moment, not offering protected/'NCB for life' option.
  • Have I been duped?? 26 Jan 2005 (Forum)
The salesman assured me it was probably typing error on DVLA's fault and I should contact then to have it rectified. But - I have just found out the car is actually a German Import - I was not made aware of this at all. Am I entitled to confront the dealer? Is there anything I can do? Should I be worried?
