  • Noisy fuel pump 11 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Just nipped home for lunch in my Audi Coupe. Slowed down to turn into my drive, and... what's that whining noise? The previously silent fuel pump now sounds like someone has left a cordless power drill running in the boot. Any suggestions? I suspect this may be expensive.
  • astra missfiring 9 Jan 2002 (Forum)
my 95 astra 16 sport has atendancy to run very rough firing on only 2 or 3 cylinders mainly when cold but not from the off. usually after a couple off minutes into the journey and lasting for a further couple off minutes. it has been known to happen after 15-20 mins of driving resulting in lack of power.having had countless visits to main dealers resulting in valve stem modifications and ultimatly a complete short block replaced the fault still occurs. any ideas
  • Toyota Yaris v Vauxhall Corsa 3 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Dont be tempted to buy a Toyota Yaris without taking the new 2002 spec Vauxhall Corsa for a spin. The Vauxhall is well built, has a superb sound system, a high quality paint finish and drives like a much bigger car. In my opinion the Toyota Yaris is very flimsy, has poor quality seats, an exceptionally poor sound system and is overpriced, considering the GLS version does not even have alloys as standard.
  • Honda accord electrics 27 Nov 2001 (Forum)
who's the whizz kid on honda accord electrics? I'm trying to wire up a pair of long range driving lights and looking for a suitable source circuit to trigger the relay so they go out when main beam is off however it is proving tricky as there is a strange arrangement on the dip/main beam wiring there are seperate bulbs and the relay that switches from main to dip seems to switch the earth circuit not the supply circuit ........HELP PLEASE. 1996 honda accord 2.0 litre not vetec TREVOR
  • clamping area. 22 Nov 2001 (Forum)
today i parked my mothers citroen BX in a clamping zone, but i put the car in its lowest suspension height setting, so the clamper couldnt put a clamp on the car, it was brilliant seeing him trying to fit a clamp on it :-) p.s. he wasnt around when i started the car up, but as soon as the engine was running he ran out of his office carrying a clamp, i was in a panic waiting for the car to go to its proper height, and then i had to quickly drive away.
  • BIO Diesel 12 Nov 2001 (Forum)
, during the show they had a section on running a car on "bio diesel" ie cooking oil. the guy was driving a big merc around. He mentioned a "conversion kit" that is needed. Unfortunately, no details were given of what thsi was, where to get it from etc, Any body got any ideas? he reckoned that it was costing about 40p/litre, as he still has to pay tax on the stuff that he puts in the car. newbs
  • Squarking Mondeo 5 Nov 2001 (Forum)
For some time I've been hearing a pronounced squark from the engine of my 97R 2litre Mondeo Ghia estate. At first, I noticed it when I'd just started the car and was turning in the drive - for this reason I thought it may be something to do with the power steering. Since then I've noticed it when the steering has not been on full lock, and occasionally on the open road. The engine does not appear to be suffering in any other respects.
  • Audi 1.8T 20V engine 4 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I have an Audi A6 with the 1.8T 20V engine and from reading a previous thread on a similar subject, HJ recommends simmering the turbo to avoid damaging the turbo bearings. Can anybody offer any advice on what driving conditions this would apply to, i.e. I presume I would need to do this after, say, a long motorway journey, or if the car has been driven quite hard? In these cases what would be the recommended 'simmering' period?
  • VW Polo 1.4 stalling 11 Oct 2001 (Forum)
I am now experiencing a problem with the engine sometimes cutting out when changing to a lower gear particularly when cornering. I don't think it's my driving technique, so what's causing it? Is it just a matter of adjusting the idle speed or what? I'd be grateful for any comments or advice.
  • Stopping Engine Oil leaks 11 Oct 2001 (Forum)
My 1985 Volvo 240 estate (auto) leaves a small deposit of engine oil on the drive. This drip comes from the torque convertor area and I believe that the rear crankshaft oil-seal is the culprit. Well, taking out the auto box and replacing the oil-seal is the 'right thing to do', but has anyone knowledge or experience of products like Wynn's Engine Stop Leak and such like.
  • New MINI 3 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Its a very nice piece of kit and everyone is stopping outside our house to have a look! Lovely to drive - feels like a much bigger car on the motorway and yet like a Caterham on the country roads! What more can you want? Sold the old Cinquecento for a grand today as well so motoring wise pretty damn chuffed.
  • Tip for Foreign Lorry Drivers 11 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Now Then, When you are not busy strangling hitch-hikers, Whilst driving on dual carriageways like the A1 why not play a game of pretending to overtake one another despite the fact that your trucks are all restricted to 56mph, meaning it takes three miles to get past, providing you don't bottle it after 10 minutes and get back behind the other Truck. this will provide hours of amusement in between swapping pornography and scoffing greasy fry ups.
  • Audi 80 Brown autobox fluid 16 Jun 2001 (Forum)
The automatic gearbox is filled way over max mark and fluid is brown (engine up to temp). Cooling fans stay on for long after engine switched off. Drives well but for slight whine. Any advice gratefully received, especially on the autobox. Perhaps it just needs a fluid change? Hopeful thanks in advance Rob fleming
  • "Old Bangers" 10 Jun 2001 (Forum)
I'm giving my company car back as it is only a perk and I don't really need it, the tax implications are dreadful. I only drive 6 miles to and from work, and I reckon the best thing to do is to buy an old ( uncatalysed ) car for this purpose, question is - which one ?? I think Volvo 340s seem to last longer than any other car of this age, have you readers any reccomendations ?
  • Motorway fuel economy 27 Mar 2001 (Forum)
I have a changed cars from a 2L car engine to a 1.6L hoping for greater economy. The 1.6L car is much more economical in "general driving" but about 5 mpg worse (35mpg against 40 mpg) on a steady 70-75 mph long run on the motorway. Am I going to have to stick to 55mph on the motorway, or is there something wrong with my new car? (Published figures Urban cold 28.5 mpg, Extra-urban 49.5 mpg, Combined 39.2 mpg)
  • Bangernomics 22 Oct 2019 (Forum)
Autos are fine on all three. Best Large family car Honda Accord 2.0 Very pleasant to drive, ok on fuel and very long lived here if looked after. I’d favour the estate but it’s rare in good order with most abused as workhorses. The Toyota Avensis is a close second but isn’t as nice to drive but there’s loads about and they’re cheap.
  • Ford Focus 1.6 - Ford Focus 1.6 eco boost - Gearbox or Transmission 15 Mar 2014 (Forum)
I roughly calculate this to around 1000 pound profit at minimum as book prices go. The maximum part exchange for my focus now is 11,499 if I drive a hell of a bargain. Still a huge hit for a car a year later and this was second hand so not “drive out the showroom loss”.
  • Cash Back Motoring (5PencePerMile) 20 Aug 2009 (Forum)
s equivalent to taking £1,000 from every UK driving license holder and if you spend £135 per month on fuel that?s exactly what they are taking off of you.
  • 2,500 miles with the Aygo 9 May 2007 (Forum)
For the first 7 or 8 weeks the car was used predominantly by my wife for her local trips with the very occasional run out. 7 weeks ago I sold my car so we have been relying on the Aygo and I have been driving it a lot more. When I first started driving it had done about 1500 miles, but it seemed very sluggish ? changing to second gear needed lots of revs in first or it would die. Being used to driving diesels I thought it was me not being used to petrol cars and changing gear too early, I started giving it a few more revs and we took it on some motorway runs and it is now much better.
  • Impressions of new Focus C-max 19 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Now the same thing with the Focus C-Max, though as might be expected the example I've been given to try was a base Studio spec and not the higher spec levels that HJ and other motor-noters get to drive. Well I wasn't looking forward to it to be honest. Although trying very hard to maintain objectivity after 15 minutes in the car and found that I preferred the driving position in a 70's Transit to that of the C-max and that the CD player sounded very iffy in quality.
