Disgruntled skoda test driver wannabe 27 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Had to chuckle at the person who wrote to HJ's torygraph column complaining that he went to a skoda dealer to arrange a test drive but the dealer had no demonstrator of the model he wanted! Indignantly, he asks how can the dealer expect anyone to buy the car! Do these people expect every dealer to have a demonstrator of every model in the range waiting to go? -
The Motorists Champion 3 Oct 2002 (Forum)
According to to-day's DT, Red Ken is taking driving lessons! That must be a conversion on a par with Saint Paul. What will follow? Congestion charging for buses, new roads for London and the man himself leading a rally in Trafalgar Square protesting about fuel duty, screaming "Can't pay, won't pay" through a megaphone? -
Passat Autobox 12 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Move the gearstick from Park to any selection and back to Park and it will start. Sometimes even this doesn't work and you have to put it in Drive, push the car a few inches, then back into Park, and it starts. I'm baffled ! Any ideas ? -
Mondeo 1.8 TD loud ticking noise? 27 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Recently bought an above on an L plate. Drives fine apart from an annoying fairly loud tick/chatter on acceleration/decel. Seller said pump had been rebuilt (looks like its been off the car at least). Noise sounds mechanical but appears to come from the centre of the dash/bulkhead! -
Mazda 323 V6...again!!! 3 Jul 2002 (Forum)
It's white this time and it's well priced. Gonna have it checked over by a local garage first BEFORE I buy this time. I had a test drive in it the other day and seems to be ok exept when I turned the A/C on and there was ticking under the bonnet on the back left hand side...anyone have an idea what that might be? Regards, Stuart -
Honda Civic 27 Jun 2002 (Forum)
To me this looks like a good deal - is there a better new car buy for this sort of money? Would this be a good bet for someone who does mainly motorway miles with some town driving or is the 1.4 engine not up to the job? -
Citroen C5 (2001 - 2008) - 2.2HDi engine - any views ? 30 Apr 2002 (Forum)
I would be interested to have the latest view please as I am looking for a tow car for my caravan but do not want an estate and the C5 hatchback 2.2HDi SX has many attractive features including the driving position which is very important. -
Who's a lucky boy then? 2 Apr 2002 (Forum)
My boss has decided to go and work in our New York office for a year, and has asked me to look after his cars, and drive them regularly while he is away. The vehicles in question? 1965 Ford Galaxie convertible (V8 of unknown size) Two 1966 Mustangs (convertible and fastback) both with the 289 V8 1969 (?) Dodge Charger (383 V8) Almost makes up for having to work over Easter putting in a new computer system. -
Mondeo underbody question 31 Mar 2002 (Forum)
It is securely pegged at its top and appears to move back ie presses against the car underside when driving forwards. Any ideas what this is? Thanks -
They are out to get me... 27 Mar 2002 (Forum)
The govt. is trying to make driving in London more difficult and it is a conspiracy so there! At Vauxhall Bridge in London they are carrying out traffic calming measures including restricting the width of the junction by removing slip roads. -
Salvage Squad. 26 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Still no matter how badly done a show on the restoration of a Tiger Moth is not so much a step in th eright dierction as a 4 hour motorway drive in th eright direction... -
Physician heal thyself. 22 Mar 2002 (Forum)
On the way to Court today to defend a speeding case (old fasioned handheld laser). Unusually found my mind wander from the job in hand (i.e. driving) as I drifited into the newly arrived 30s where this driver fell foul of the dreaded device. Mind was partly occupied in how I was going to defend this lad, woke up from this daydream and found my speed almost matched what he was being done for. -
New Range Rover Diesel 24 Feb 2002 (Forum)
It reminded me of the growl from the Vauxhall Senator's straight six. Given that it weighs about 2 tons, has four-wheel drive, a slush box and a diesel, it accelerated quite briskly. I don't suppose the fuel consumption is that good though. -
Politicians taxing us to death? 17 Feb 2002 (Forum)
http://www.washingtontimes.com/op-ed/ed-column-200225173244.htm And our glorious Chancellor wants us to drive smaller cars. Yes we have discussed it before but this for those who may have missed it. Why do we put up with politicians whose policies could kill us? Folks discuss the new CO2 emissions rules but why do so few question the lack of science behind it? -
'Driven' tonight 8 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Apart from the plug for cheap ClioSport 172s (either good PR by showroom4cars or they nicked it from my site) I thought the show was excellent, especially playing with one man down. I once had driving lessons from Johnny Mowlem. Shame about those new chicanes at Castle Coomb. (Sorry, Alex, didn't spell-check 'Coomb'.) HJ -

Transmission for future cars 30 Jan 2002 (Forum)
In my opinion 2mpg less and half a second on the 0-60 time is a small price to pay for a much less stressful drive. -
Summer Toy Suggestions 23 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Boys and girls, This morning's blue skies tickled a piece of dormant grey matter and prompted me to start thinking about a toy for the coming summer. Something with character that will be fun to drive around the Hants/Berks countryside on warm evenings and at weekends. Shouldn't cost more than about £5K and could be turned into a winter resto' project later in the year. Up for consideration were : A '60's American ragtop A Frogeye Sprite or MG Any other suggestions or recommendations ? -

Car Ventilation vs Pollution 13 Jan 2002 (Forum)
On my drive/crawl into work each day I often find myself moving the recirculate air slider so that I don't have to breath the fumes of the car in front when stationary - problem is my car then mists up. Is there any way to solve this problem?
