  • meter maids... 25 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I wonder why they bother just slapping a ticket on - it seems matey doesn't give a monkeys... Surely in a case like this the solution is to tow the vehicle away (as I wrote, was parked on a ped. crossing) and only release it when the fines were paid... or is that just too logical?
  • Sierra auto box leak 13 May 2001 (Forum)
Last week almost two years on at 89000 miles, after a 120 mile trip the front seal blew again. I have not removed the box yet so internal damage is as yet unknown. The car has never towed in its life. How can this happen!!! An experts opinion would be appreciated. Pete.
  • Lexus RX 450h - Lexus Dealership 1 Oct 2015 (Forum)
I was realistic in my opinion in not expecting the full amount back on the Lexus, I had after all driven some 3000 miles in it, but would have expected a much more of a better deal than I got. A tow bar had also been fitted to the car, for me to tow our caravan, and borrow a small trailer from time to time to carry work rubbish away, if required. They said probably quite rightly, about selling privately, but time was not on my side.
  • Car blew up & and was stolen the same day I bought 13 Jul 2024 (Forum)
My wife called the police to send out highway patrol as I was in a very dangerous spot. I have an invoice from the tow truck and so on and so on. But I don't have a physical car to reject or have fixed. Thanks in advance
  • Sort of. Or suggestions... - Kei Trucks 15 Mar 2024 (Forum)
We have a small trailer tent (Dandy Dart, about 350kg) that we use during the summer, so anything would have to be able to tow that. Our current second car (Renault Twingo) can't tow. I have always fancied a kei truck, since I drove a Bedford Rascal back in the day (the day being about 1997-98 in this case).  It occurred to me that, with a dropside, I could potentially take the trailer tent off the full chassis (it needs new suspension) and just put it on the load bed of such a truck when required (fixed in place somehow and held in the air whilst putting it on somehow...)
  • Random choice ? - Replacement (proper) 4*4 1 Nov 2017 (Forum)
Reasonable carrying capacity. Boder collie in the boot, shooting kit regularly, etc.  Towing capacity. Usually only a small trailer, but occasionally a full-size Ifor Wms double axle trailer, with a decent amount of load (so about 1.5 tonnes total towing capacity) Manual gearbox. It's mainly her car, and she hates automatics with a passion.
  • 306 HDI 90 T reg - ECU/Imobilisor?? 30 Jan 2006 (Forum)
If you have persevered with this tale until now, I would apreciate any thoughts on the above problems. I have three garage bills to pay, 2 month's car hire and ferry costs!! (about £1000 in all) We towed the car a few times between the 1st and 2nd garage and were told that we might have 'spiked the ECU' by doing this and trying to jump start it - is this possible? Anyway the car is runing again.
  • Buying a car from a dealer 5 hours away? 26 Mar 2021 (Forum)
Even then not so keen on getting on a train due catching you know what and all the various train changes. The other option is to go by car, but then a tow truck. The car dealer does not offer delivery (so I would have to find a reputable one).  The car is about 150 miles away...... They dealer said they only let people drive in their compound, but have to speak insurers about going on the open road....
  • Mazda 5 - Mazda 5 1.8 Petrol. 26 Nov 2020 (Forum)
Seems to have been popular as there are no 2 liter engines around. So, 116 hp. Reminds me of my dad and a 1.6 liter Ford Sierra, packed full and towing a boat driving up to the Highlands of Scotland! I once had a 1.4 liter Astra as a hire car and felt it was ok. Should be fine? I only see issues around tyre wear but only on sports models. Photos only tell part of the story but 80,000 to 100,000 miles still should see at least 3 years of use if it is 2007 or 2008?
  • SCRAPPING A UK REGISTERED CAR IN ANOTHER EU COUNTR 25 Aug 2019 (Forum)
It will not get back on the road without a new engine, and it is not financially sensible to do so. The car is 400 miles away from my home, so it would be expensive to get it towed back simply for the purpose of scrapping it. I have spoken to a garage in Cork who will have the car scrapped on my behalf. My question is – if I have the car scrapped at an Irish ATF, and receive a certificate of destruction, will the UK authorities accepted this as having it properly disposed of?
  • Isuzu Trooper - Starter Motor 26 Sep 2016 (Forum)
My husband thinks if the starter motor spins before it starts, no one buy it. Looking at other ads for Troopers (a brilliant tow car) we are not asking an excessive price and would knock £150 for the start motor. Any thoughts v much appreciated.

  • Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 2001 1.2 easytronic break down with F displayed 8 Dec 2014 (Forum)
Hi.Have seen comments in October regarding the above problem and wanted to know if the person threading has had any code responses. My 51 reg Corsa broke down flashing F yesterday and wouldn't do anything.Called AA they towed to to local garage.Local garage state will cost in region of £1800 and then it still might not be resolved and I might want to consider scrapping! This really is not an option. Am I right in thinking if I can get the ECU codes someone might be able to guide me in the right direction?
  • Transit - diesel engines 2 Jan 2014 (Forum)
(or rusty) I see lots of 2.4 rwd with blown engines ( no doubt  some of them have been destroyed  by towing heavy plant trailers too fast) but some are sold as 2401cc and others as 2402cc. Is this the same engine or is one a 16v version ? Can you fit an 8 valve 2.4 engine to a blown up 16v (which I presume must be costly to repair so the van is disposed of) Which one is the best buy ?
  • Audi A4 1998 2.8 - Automatic gearbox issue 24 Dec 2013 (Forum)
The "clutch" is slipping! I can put into any gear and the car starts to budge at about 4-5000 revs. Ive had the Audi towed in and to my suprise the following morning everything runs like a dream. Only then to have the same problem when the motor warms up. Slipping with no power. Please could anyone come up with any sugestions to what could be wrong?
  • Toyota Avensis D4D - Which Avensis to buy? 7 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Then there is a really nice V reg. 2 litre diesel Corrolla that has only done 62,000, wonder if that would tow my caravan as well as the Avensis.

  • VW Golf 2.0 TDI 2006 - Loss of power following RTA - coincidence? 30 Apr 2013 (Forum)
A few weeks prior to the accident the engine light was on and was cleared by changing the ECG valve. The car mainly gets used for commuting but I also use it for towing a light caravan. Could the loss of power have been as a results of the accident or just a coincidence? I am taking it back to the accident and repair garage in the morning to see what they think.
  • Vauxhall Astra Mk 5 1.8 Life, hatchback. 2008. - Auto gearbox stuck in park - Gear lever moves 9 Feb 2013 (Forum)
No problems with the car prior to this event which happened quite suddenly in a supermarket car park. The car was towed to a garage. The engine seems fine and is working, apparently. The car belongs to my daughter who lives 100+ miles away in Thetford, Norfolk.  I have not been able to inspect the car myself but find the above diagnosis hard to believe.
  • Ford Mondeo - 1999 Mondeo estate mk ii sudden starter failure 8 Jan 2013 (Forum)
MoT coming up and it doesn't owe us anything, but it has always driven beautifully and started first time. just put in £30 of petrol....no homestart cover either so would have to pay for a tow. Haynes manual and online searches not much help. Any ideas most welcome, if only to avoid the difficulty of trying to buy a replacement without a useable car.
