  • Travelling abroad without ins certificate 8 Apr 2009 (Forum)
We are off to see the GFs parents in France on thursday evening for 9 days or so, and whilst we are away the insurance runs out. Knowing this we arranged the cover for next year early, (1st April). As of today the documents have not arrived, and despite calling the company they are next to no help.
  • Carrying spare bulbs 15 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Each summer, posters get in a panic because they're going to France and have to buy a box of spare bulbs. Don't you carry them with you all the time? What happens when a headlight bulb goes at the start of a long journey through fog in the dark on a Sunday evening?
  • Golf Mk 4 TDPDI steering judder 30 Jul 2007 (Forum)
During the last year I have had all new tyres and the wheels balanced three times but the problem is still there. I live in France and strangely this does'nt seem to happen in the UK! The car is right hand drive and has done 60K miles
  • Short term european breakdown cover 20 Jun 2006 (Forum)
We are taking our car (1995 W124 Mercedes E class diesel) over to France for a couple of weeks this year on holiday. The car itself is in good condition, well maintained and will be serviced before we go. However it is of course highly advisable to take out breakdown cover and I would welcome any advice on who might provide the cover we need.
  • High Speed Insulation 3 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Refering to the thread about the high speed crash in France. I was doing almost three figures on the M1 (yes I know) on Chrsitams Day in a small line of cars. My car was loaded with five people and luggage. The car felt very safe and secure, and with plently more to give.
  • Best View From Motorway Pull-In 21 Dec 2004 (Forum)
What is the best view anyone has had from a motorway pull-in (service station or,if abroad "aire de...." as in France)? My favourite is on the autoroute from Calais towards Normandy. There is an "aire de....." just before you get to the Le Touquet turn off. It has the wind turbines there,a sight in themselves, but if you bother to climb up to a grassy ledge (Normany Bound pull-in I am afraid) there is a lovely view of the small village of Camiers a few hundred feet below, and on towards the sea from Etaples up to Equihen.
  • Bora's bulbs 25 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Is this a scam so the dealer can charge £15 for a £2 light bulb? Or is it really impossible for the user to fit a replacement? What happens in France when you are supposed to carry spare bulbs if: a) the manual doesn't tell you what bulb to buy. b) you can't fit it yourself anyway. By the way, anybody know how to do it?
  • Best Synthetic Oil for my Honda Accord. 16 Sep 2004 (Forum)
What is the best synthetic oil to use for topping up my new Honda Accord diesel? It hasn\'t used any oil yet - just over 3,000 miles - but I\'m off to France again next week and want to take some oil with me. I\'ve looked at all of the labels on the various oils, but none mention whether they are synthetic or not. Magnatec - just found out above that it\'s not synthetic - mentions synthetic engineering on the label, so I\'m a bit confused.
  • Car Hire special offers 17 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Does anyone know of any current internet discount/promotional codes for car hire? I am shopping around for 2 weeks hire in France (all the usual major companies and holiday autos etc). All the sites have a field for discount codes, so I wonder if anyone knows of one? I am a member of an professional association that supposedly gets good rates when quoting the affiliate number, but these don't compare well with the cheapest quote so far.
  • one-way leasing - drop off in Europe? 31 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I am travelling with family to France / Italy for 6-8 weeks and need a 6 or 7-seater. Ideally we would like to drop off this car at Rome airport (before returning to Australia) but renting seems astronomical (up to £2,000!) - has anyone got some good suggestions.
  • Coolboxes - any good? 26 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Just seen that my local friendly motoring chain-store has half-price cool boxes. Just the thing for the family holiday to the south of France. But then I wondered; 1) are they actually any good? 2) and if they are, do they need to draw power all the time (which might be a problem as my C5 switches everything off an hour after the engine is switched off) or do they just start over again next time you start the engine (in which case probably OK for drinks, but not meat products etc.)
  • why don't my lights work? 17 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Hi all, another demand for B-room expertise. I have changed the front lights on my Passat as I am about to matriculate the car in france and was required to get continental lights for driving on the right. However, they do not work, that is the bulbs are fine but there is no effect on any of the lights settings (beam, full beam, half beam).
  • Fumes in Freelander 29 Jan 2003 (Forum)
If I put the ventilation system in recirc it stops it. The air con is off so I don't think it's coming from that. My local dealer (admittedly in France) is baffled and so am I Any suggestions as to the cause would be welcome Jules
  • Hot Air? 8 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Did anyone here an item on radio 2 yesterday about a car that has been developed (In France, I think) that runs on compressed air? Apparantly it can refilled by the air compressor at any garage in two minutes and has a range of 150 miles with a top speed of 69 mph. It can also be filled overnight on a domestic compressor of the type used to inflate air-beds, etc.
  • diesel price 17 Jan 2001 (Forum)

  • Bien sur, ...ça n'est pas la vie en rose 29 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Its fragile suspension and feeble mechanics are beyond salvation. So what does he do? He orders another one from La France. J-P I can deal with your liking for snails and eating snake, I realise you chaps are not like us at all. I know that you are a Norman and do not consider yourself part of modern day France and that your countrymen ensured the English Royal Family spoke French for about 3 centuries and to this day our heraldry is still so described, I respect the fact you retired from a fine career in the French Diplomatic service, I think your country has a sleazeball for a President and so does mine but that's not our fault, I like you as a friend, but doesn't your choice of car lack a certain je ne sais quoi in the learning department?

Hydrogen in the UK is available either from the steam reforming of natural gas or light fuel oil. For large users it is available as liquid hydrogen manufactured in France for their rockets. You can make it by electrolysis of water in "very" expensive plant, and that might happen in a big way if wind or solar power becomes really cheap, (or if steam reforming for fertiliser production is banned or taxed).
  • Dacia Logan MCV (2006) - Registering in the UK 9 Mar 2015 (Forum)
I bought this car from new in France in 2012 and would like to register this car in the UK. However, to do this I need to find left dip headlights. This car was never intended for the UK market. I asked a few French dealers before I left the country but they couldn't help.
  • Any - Britishness 1 Dec 2014 (Forum)
A Nissan Qashqai is designed and built in Sunderland, but has certain components made in Japan / France.  A Saab may be manufactured in Sweden but the Company will have a salesforce in the UK which might make up say 10% of the total cost of the car.  The car that will come top will be 100% designed, manufactured, tested, sold (taxed) and all parts manufactured in Britain.
