  • What are the police for? 1 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Road reduced to one lane for maybe 200 metres, but with a curve so you couldn't see the other end of the restriction. Traffic lights there but not working. Speed camera van at one end. Question: where were the two police officers I saw? Were they (a) sitting in the van or (b) one at each end of the restriction, directing traffic to ensure no accidents? Am I cynical, or just old enough to remember when the police accepted their first duty was to the public?
  • Remove HGV Governors? Err, no thanks HJ! 11 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I see in Saturday's Telegraph HJ is advocating removing governors from HGVs. I know he's anti speed-hump (mmm...) and anti speed cameras (getting dafter) - but has he taken leave of his senses completely? I don't want to be on wet roads with 40 ton artics jack-knifing at 90mph - we waste enough time in HGV-instigated hold-ups on the A14 as it is!
  • tom tom no no 16 May 2006 (Forum)
Do I need street maps of USA if I'm never going to drive there. Are they as good as they say with hands free phones? If I have a satnav with speed camera capability will the gendarmes fine me? Is the ONE level OK or should I go for the latest version
  • Please help me! 10 Mar 2006 (Forum)
However, a police van pulled out of a nearby junction and pulled over to the other side of the road, think he may have ben checking licsence plate. Does this mean i will get fined? or would they have to have caught me on camera? Please help, very anxious as i have NEVER done anything like this before!
  • Making a monkey of the diesel myth 29 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Interesting article in the weekend press where the fuel economy of a 1.1 litre petrol Citroen C1 was compared with a 1.4HDI diesel C1 on a complete lap of the M25 at 50 mph (traffic & cameras permitting). Contrary to expectations the the diesel car achieved 82.7 mpg at a cost of £6.37, whilst the petrol engined motor returned a remarkable 85.5 mpg at a cost of £6.10. So the most economical car tested to date is a petrol, which has beaten not only diesel but all current hybrids as well.!!!!
  • Discussion: Best & Worst Film Car Chases 8 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Thought it would be intersting to hear everyone's views on what is the best and worst car chase they have seen in a film. Best: Ronin - through the streets in Paris (I think) - both the actual camera work, the stunts and the length of the chase make this my favourite. Worst: Fled (Laurence Fisbourne & Stephen Baldwin) - two guys on Ducati 916's not being able to outrun a big old cadillac or something similar - not exactly realistic.
  • Road Angel & Installation 2 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Just bought one of these devices owing to frequent encounters with cameras.Excellent at highlighting local blackspots, North Derbyshire, where I have indeed seen several accidents in recent times.Local fixed cameras all highlighted as well. I'll want to make the installation neater in due course. Car is a 2001 Passat- anyone had experience of concealing a power cable? I'm hoping that there is a gap between the dashboard and windscreen to feed the cable to the steering column area where hopefuly there will be a suitable power source.
  • A suggestion! 10 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Or for just occasionally declared open days on certain stretches of road, when we could have a blast and you lot could go another way, or stay home? (The nice police could give us the probably very flattering camera readings!) Goodness knows we pay enough.
  • Speeding (mostly excl cameras) XVIII 12 Jul 2004 (Forum)
The various speed cameras and speeding threads shed much heat, but also a little light amongst the smoke. One consistent theme that emerges is demand for higher speeds on motorways, so I thought out might be interesting to explore an area where there might be room for agreement.
  • Windscreen replacement on a modern car 15 Jan 2019 (Forum)
As for the re-calibration, this seemed to require a technician to drive the car for 20 mins, during which time it must go above 40mph. But some windscreen companies, including Autoglass, say this is not neccessary, simply aim the camera at a static target. Where it gets a bit murky though, is that for this method to work properly, apparently the tyre pressures and wheel alignment need to be spot on, and the car needs to be on a smooth flat and level surface.
  • Volkswagen Polo - 115mph Average in Polo 1.4 13 Jun 2016 (Forum)
We honestly thought there would be an error, or she was passed by a m/c as she went through a camera. We had not heard anything until last week. Essex police are taking her to court for this offence, even though the top speed of her car was 107mph new in 2002. We intend to fight this fully, but have received some ludicrous quotations from severall law firms to represent us.
  • In Car Cameras 16 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Quite an emotive subject this... but am I the only one of the opinion that the standards of driving in the UK in recent years has somewhat deteriorated?...
  • No CCTV footage and driver denying liability :( 13 Aug 2010 (Forum)
At  this point I  phoned the police and basically gave a running commentary of what was occurring. The guy was so aggressive, but  calmed down once I pointed  out the cctv cameras. To cut a long story short, I damaged my shoulder quite badly and I'm still receiving treatment. The police traced the owner (not the driver), who then supplied the driver's  info. He eventually turned up at a police station several weeks after the incident, but is denying all liability ( I would have loved to have heard his tale) and the CCTV cameras never picked up the incident.
  • Taiwan top for radar trapping? 17 Apr 2006 (Forum)
What is noticeable is that sticking to the speed limit doesn't upset anyone and, yes, there are BMWs. Other motoring things noticed: either side overtaking traffic light cameras many motorway cameras mostly around junctions tow trucks in big cities wide scooter lanes in most towns and often in the country signposting mostly English as well as Chinese but it helps to know road numbers the occasional Rover 600 and the odd Freelander Toyotas, Toyotas, Toyotas Don't try drag racing at the lights with a Kia Picanto EuroStar automatic!
  • Laser alert - worth it? 23 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I don't know how to explain this without advocating speeding (which I will say, in some cases is perfectly safe) but I have seen this product. http://www.tradingdirect.co.uk/system/index.html I know it will only provide protection from camera and laser vans but I wanted to ask people's opinions of this product. Could people please check it out and let me know if it really is going to work. I understand that it is difficult to test once you get the product as you can't just go out and find a camera van (but I bet you if I didn't get it there would be plenty!)
  • NIP * 2 28 Jun 2024 (Forum)
While they're working at any given time either could be the driver.  They're caught by an average speed camera driving above the speed limit for their vehicle.  A NIP/S172 notice goes to their employer. Employer after all diligence cannot say with certainty who was driving, just that it would be one of Fred or George.
  • Ulez extension 5 Aug 2023 (Forum)
If all goes well for Mr Khan then next month the ULEZ will cover a huge chunk of London. Apparently some residents are vandalising the new cameras out of desparation  as reasonable arguments are ignored and Khan knows best of course. Some folks will suddenly have to fork out £12.50 I believe every journey except December 25th. I guess other cities will be watching how it goes before launching their own schemes, Drivers have paid their dues to use Britain’s roads and I would love someone who knows to explain the legal ramifications.
  • Mazda - Beyond stop line 9 Jun 2023 (Forum)
I did not actually go through a red light but I'm worried as the law says every part of the vehicle has to be before the stop line when the light tienes Red. I don't think I saw any red light traffic cameras in any case.
  • All - Dirty Backsides 25 Feb 2023 (Forum)
Of more concern perhaps is the fact that you can hardly see a rear number plate on some cars let alone read it.  Perhaps a dirty car is becoming a badge of honour or more so the speed cameras cannot read the plate.  The chances of being pulled by plod is very low>
  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 04-05-2019 Part 1 14 May 2019 (Forum)
re:ACC, these systems work perfectly when designed and built well. The VW system was done on the cheap and so is very poor, the BMW system in the i3 uses a camera and so fails whenever the sun is out! Lexus first fitted ACC to its cars more than 15 years ago, and the system still works perfectly on 15 year old Lexus cars. There is a reason that German cars don’t show the same reliability.......
