  • Fast idling post HG replacement. (Polo) 24 Feb 2006 (Forum)
m aware, all connections/pipes are installed securely, so could it be either valve or ignition timing? The car is running better than it ever has before, with a smoother idle and better performance (just in case that helps)
  • Upgrading car audio - difficult for DIY? 6 Feb 2006 (Forum)
How difficult is it to upgrade car audio ? Not the unit itself so much, but rather the speakers, and in the case of my Octavia, running extra wires to the rear for the speakers (seem to be some mount points under the rear parcel-shelf). The speaker driver-units in my Octavia must have cost about 50p by the sound of them - rather tinny !
  • 1999 - 206xs 2 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Bought this car recently and it runs strong and it appears(ed) to be a bargain. Noticed however that on starting from cold there is a rumble/squeal (squeal sounds like a fan belt but its not) that goes away if i depress the clutch even slightly.
  • Peugeot 306 Eng Mangmnt Unit 12 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Hi guys, I have a Peugeot 306 petrol saloon, 1999 on T plate. The car does not want to tick over on idle. In gear & running, it's fine. The AA said that the Engine Management Unit needs repair or replacing. My Peugeot dealer has quoted me £886 to replace the EMU - Please confirm if this seems about OK or are the boys in blue boiler suits taking financial advantage ?
  • Omega ('97) Rough Idle 4 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Help! My local private hire chappie runs a 2.0 (?) Omega, and has spent much money on (not) sorting out a rough idle problem. It has been to a local Vaux. indie, plus had diagnostics on it, as well as a new air valve. No joy. It ticks over like a Wright Cyclone radial engine (as in DC-3) on startup.
  • Computer Related Questions - Volume 77 19 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I've just obtained a 2nd hand computer running Windows 98. When I try to open a JPEG, it opens it with Internet Explorer. It refused to open it with Paint, and there doesn't seem to be a Windows Picture Viewer (or Picture and Fax Viewer). Right-clicking on the jpeg offers the option of "open" but not "open with".
  • Petrol Inyer Diesel 19 Dec 2005 (Forum)
There's an RAC ad that warns not to even start your car if you accidently put unleaded in you diesel car, but it doesn't tell you why or how your car would run if you did drive off and goes on to warn you of horrific costs for repairs. I wonder if they are being a bit alarmist here. I would have thought that it depends on what percentage of petrol you have mixed in the diesel already in the tank, but I'm not an expert on the matter.
  • Skoda Felicia 11 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Am I right that this is basically VW engineering? I am interested in a good solid reliable workhorse that won't cost too much to keep running. I am not concerned about what it's like to drive (unless it's really horrid) Yes or no? Please advise.
  • Double Car tax brainstorm 6 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I went out today and got a new tax disc for the car, backdated to the start of December. The time came to put it into the car and I realised my current tax runs out at the end of December, not November. So my car is now double taxed for a month. I know it's only £15, but I give Gordon enough as it is. Is there a way to get this back? V PS. Assume that I already know what an idiot I am for doing this in the first place.
  • Bless this nations motorway network... 25 Nov 2005 (Forum)
for enabling me to travel from Blackburn, Lancashire to High Wycombe in 3hrs yesterday afternoon, spend a couple of hours seeing my cousin in hospital there, then 3hrs to get back. No drama, no worries or fuss. Straight clean run both ways and came back just after 10pm pretty relaxed. The time taken for the journey was exactly what the AA traffic route planner had said. Thank you to all concerned! Stu PS. Of course, I would not have attempted this on a Friday

  • 1995 Corsa 1.2 hesitation 31 Oct 2005 (Forum)
The problem appears to go away once the engine is warm and doesn't recur if the engine is switched off, left to rest for a short period (say an hour or two) and then restarted. Any suggestions on what may be the cause? Car runs fine apart from this - just appears to "bog down" as if suffering from fuel starvation. Thanks, Alex
  • Moving adverts on HJ site 27 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I have no problem with the small ones on the left, but I had to resize the window to remove it from my sight. Perhaps a guideline should be drawn up about the adverts that keep this site running. I personally feel this one has gone too far. -- Roger I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say.
  • creaking ford focus 21 Oct 2005 (Forum)
my 2002 focus 1.6 zetec has started making creaking noises, sounds like rear passenger side.it is most noticable going over speed humps.please tell me i only need something greasing, as two people have run into me over the last month and i,m skint.not in the ofending area i might add. p.s having driven two different hire cars over the last month a corsa and micra.it reminds you how brilliant the focus is to drive.
  • yes my 306td again 6 Oct 2005 (Forum)
firstly thanks to every1 that has helped so far in getting my 306 working again, the car now runs and drives like new with no sign of the white smoke issues i was having or poor starting, only thing now is that when i floor it and the turbo cuts in there is a visible puff of blue smoke, any ideas on the cause of this?
  • M25 J4/M11/Stansted: Any roadworks? 18 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Haven't done this run for a while but will be doing so midweek, aiming to arrive at Stansted for an 09.00 weekday flight. Does anyone know of any current or forthcoming roadworks on the M25 or M11 which may affect my timing?
  • Merc Build Date? 13 Sep 2005 (Forum)
My C Class was registered in March 2003 but a lot (is not all) the components have October 2001 stamped on them. My dealer informs me that MB will commission a parts run that may be used on cars over a number of years so the difference in dates is not unusual. Is this correct, or are they fibbing and, has my car been standing in a field hub deep in water for over a year?
  • New car tax rules?? 8 Sep 2005 (Forum)
The way I understand it you have to renew your tax straight away, but you also need an MOT certificate to renew your car tax. I have both coming up soon and I don't want to be running around trying to get work for the MOT just because of this new law. Do they make exceptions or is it just a stupid rule??
  • Cat damage with leaded petrol 13 Aug 2005 (Forum)
At some point the active material in the cat is presumably neutralised or destroyed and it has to be replaced to meet the MoT test, but are there any side effects such as bad running or confusion for the ECU once the damage is done? Might it not also be cheaper if possible to remove the cat before travelling (replace it on return) or does that give the ECU brain damage?
  • Peugeot 306 Problem2 9 Aug 2005 (Forum)
When starting from cold, there is no smoke for the first minute or so, then suddenly clouds of the stuff (greyish) come out till it's heated up. Once its heated up, the smoke stops completely again and it runs well. My first thought was the glow plugs, so I've just finished replacing them (a real pain in the butt), and the problem is still there. Any suggestions anyone as to where to look next?? Thanks, Phil
